Dave Portnoy rips into Joy Taylor over 'dumbest most ridiculous rant' about Caitlin Clark's rivalry with Angel Reese

Daily Mail3 hours ago

In the WNBA 's version of the 'Chicken or the Egg' debate, Barstool Sports president Dave Portnoy called out Fox Sports' Joy Taylor for her take on whether Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese helped boost the other's popularity.
Clark and Reese both became two of the biggest faces in women's college basketball around the time they faced off in the 2023 national championship game in Dallas.
Reese and the LSU Tigers ended up winning the title - their first in school history - by thoroughly dominating Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes 102-85.
It was in that game where Reese made a few taunts in Clark's direction - including mocking John Cena 's 'You Can't See Me' celebration and pointing to her ring finger.
On a recent episode of the Joe Budden Podcast, Taylor spoke about the rivalry's transition from college to the pro ranks - and offered her thoughts on who's to thank for the intense nature of their matchups.
'This is the Magic Johnson, Larry Bird moment for the WNBA. This is great,' Taylor began. 'I'm a storyteller. I think storylines are so f***ing important.

'I think you need villains. I think you need heroes. You need s**t to sell. You got to sell a fight, brand all of this.
'It upset white men to watch this strong, winning, unapologetic Black woman be in Caitlin's face. They still cling to it. It's now spun to this whole thing where Caitlin's better than Angel and blah, blah, blah.
'I just said... we would not be talking about Caitlin Clark the way that we do if it wasn't for that moment with Angel Reese. I will die on this hill. I will die on this hill. I will fight this war.'
Almost right on queue, that 'war' began with Portnoy - one of Clark's most notable fans - slapping down Taylor's assessment.
'The dumbest most ridiculous rant of all time,' Portnoy said. 'Nobody outside hardcore WNBA fans and LSU fans would know who Angel was it weren't for her riding Caitlin's coattails. It's made her a fortune so kudos to her but this is the dumbest take I've ever heard.'
Reese put up 15 rebounds and 10 assists en route to being named Final Four Most Outstanding Player in 2023. Clark, meanwhile, was named alongside Reese on the all-tournament team that year.
The next season, the two met in the Elite Eight where Clark and Iowa eeked out a hard fought 94-87 win over Reese and LSU.
However, Iowa would once again be foiled in the title game against South Carolina - with Clark earning Final Four all-tournament team honors for a second year in a row.
Accolades followed both players into the WNBA. Both were named All-Stars, both were named to the All-Rookie Team, and Reese led the league in rebounds.
Meanwhile, Clark took home some serious hardware by being named to the All-WNBA First Team, leading the league in assists, and winning the league's Rookie of the Year award.
This season, the rivals are both leading the league in statistical categories.
Reese is atop the leaderboard in rebounds while Clark is tied for first in assists at the time of publishing.
Reese's Chicago Sky will face off against Clark's Indiana Fever next on July 27 at the United Center - the home of the Chicago Bulls.

Simone Biles shares cryptic message amid Riley Gaines trans athlete feud after deleting X account

Simone Biles might have deleted her X account after her feud with Riley Gaines, but the Olympian is still speaking out on Instagram. Biles apologized for getting personal while attacking Gaines for her anti-trans campaigning earlier this month, telling the former swimmer to 'bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.' After intensifying scrutiny, the Olympian deactivated her account on Sunday but shared a quote on her Instagram story on Monday that read: 'Strength is what we gain from the madness we survive'. Biles initially sparked her feud with Gaines when the OutKick host criticized a Minnesota high school softball team for competing with a trans pitcher. During her swimming career, Gaines competed against trans athlete Lia Thomas at an NCAA meet in Atlanta, tying for fifth. 'You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser,' Biles wrote on X three weeks ago after Gaines called out the Minnesota team. 'You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. 'Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!' Four days later, Biles publicly apologized on X, writing: 'I wanted to follow up from my last tweets. I've always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport. 'The current system doesn't adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn't help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for.' Gaines replied: 'I accept Simone's apology for the personal attacks including the ones where she body-shamed me. I know she knows what this feels like. She's still the greatest female gymnast of all time.' In a lengthy apology, Biles also admitted she didn't have the answers on how to include trans athletes in sports in a way that keeps everyone happy - seemingly acknowledging how polarazing her criticism of Gaines had been. Biles wrote: 'These are sensitive, complicated issues that I truly don't have the answers or solutions to, but I believe it starts with empathy and respect. I was not advocating for policies that compromise fairness in women's sports. My objection is to be singling out children for public scrutiny in ways that feel personal and harmful. 'Individual athletes — especially kids — should never be the focus of criticism of a flawed system they have no control over. 'I believe sports organizations have a responsibility to come up with rules supporting inclusion while maintaining fair competition. We all want a future for sport that is fair, inclusive, and respectful.' Biles deleted her account on X over the weekend after the Gaines feud had spilled out Biles' apology was shared by her husband - the NFL player for the Chicago Bears, Jonathan Owens - on Instagram. Gaines caught Biles' eye by mocking the Minnesota state softball champions Champlin Park, who won their competition with a dominant trans pitcher in Marissa Rothenberger. She retweeted a picture of a team celebration on X, writing: 'Comments off lol. To be expected when your star player is a boy.' Gaines had also made her opposition clear on the controversial AB Hernandez, who has even faced protests from her own competititors while competing in California last month. One athlete, who finished second to Hernandez at a different meet last month, waited for male-born Hernandez to step down from the podium before taking what Gaines decribed as her 'rightful place' in the No 1 spot for a picture - while also describing Hernandez as 'a fraud'. Days after Biles went after her on social media, Gaines announced she is pregnant wth her first child.

How Dakota Johnson is REALLY doing after Chris Martin split

It's been three weeks since Dakota Johnson and her ex-fiancé Chris Martin reportedly ended their on/off seven-year relationship, and she's said to be 'doing well.' At 48, the divorced father-of-two is 13 years older than the Materialists actress, and they were last pictured together as recent as May 19 taking a yoga class in Malibu near the six-bedroom mansion they bought for $12.5M in 2020. 'The split wasn't exactly a shock,' a source told People on Monday. 'They had the same issues for a while.' Dakota evidently doesn't want to live with any regret, she 'wants to live her life very intentionally.' 'She loves all her creative projects and is excited about her career,' the insider continued. 'She believes there is more to life than work though. She wants a meaningful life on all levels.' It's been three weeks since Dakota Johnson and her ex-fiancé Chris Martin reportedly ended their on/off seven-year relationship, and she's said to be 'doing well' In 2013, Chris 'consciously uncoupled' with his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow after a decade of marriage and welcoming 19-year-old son Moses and 21-year-old daughter Apple. 'I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart,' Johnson gushed to Bustle last year. 'I could watch [Martin perform] every day. I don't know how to explain it...I'm watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing.' In 2021, the seven-time Grammy winner reportedly penned his 2021 song My Universe about the Madame Web action star: 'In the night, I lie and look up at you / When the morning comes, I watch you rise / There's a paradise they couldn't capture / That bright infinity inside your eyes.' Coldplay is next scheduled to bring their $1.26B-grossing, 225-date Music of the Spheres World Tour to Canada's Rogers Stadium in Toronto on July 7-8 and 11-12. On Monday, Neon unveiled the first trailer for Dakota's next film Splitsville, which hits US theaters August 22 and everywhere else on September 5. Johnson produces and stars as Julie in Michael Angelo Covino's couple-swapping unromantic comedy also starring Covino, Kyle Marvin, and Adria Arjona. The cast and crew received a six-minute standing ovation when Splitsville had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. On August 15, UK audiences can finally catch the nepo baby of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith as matchmaker Lucy in Celine Song's critically-acclaimed love triangle rom-com Materialists, which has earned $31.4M back from its $20M budget at the box office. Dakota has been hard at work producing and starring as ghost author Lowen Ashleigh in Michael Showalter's big-screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover's 2018 novel Verity. The psychological romance thriller - already scheduled to hit US theaters May 15, 2026 - will also star Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. Johnson has her 67-year-old mother to thank for her big-screen debut, at age nine, in stepdad Antonio Banderas' dismally-reviewed directorial debut Crazy in Alabama in 1999. Before landing her breakout role in the Fifty Shades trilogy, the Independent Spirit Award winner first caught the industry's attention as a panty-clad Harvard University student Amelia in David Fincher's 2010 drama The Social Network.

Athletics break ground on $1.75B stadium on Las Vegas Strip

June 23 - The Athletics organization held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for its new $1.75 billion stadium in Las Vegas. The team, which is playing its home games in West Sacramento, Calif. this season following its offseason exit from longtime home Oakland, was represented by team owner John Fisher and president Marc Badain among others at the groundbreaking on the Las Vegas Strip. "It's an epic moment for our 124-year-old franchise," Fisher said in thanking several civic leaders in the Las Vegas area, as well as MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, also in attendance at the event. It was a remarkable scene for Fisher, who last year was quoted about the franchise being poised to lose $40 million due to a lack of a new stadium, after failing to come to agreement with authorities in Oakland on parameters for a project to save professional baseball in Oakland. Instead, he struck a deal with Clark County, noting that his family was still contributing the majority of the financing. Badain was hired by the Athletics in March following his successful stewardship of the relocation of the Raiders to Vegas and the construction of the Raiders' new stadium, Allegiant Stadium. "It's an honor," Badain said, when asked about being involved with two stadium projects. "Today's a real accomplishment for everyone in the Athletics organization." The new ballpark, with a planned capacity of 33,000, is not expected to be completed until 2028, leaving the Athletics to continue playing at Sacramento's Sutter Health Park (the home of the minor leagues' Sacramento River Cats) until then. The Athletics currently sit in last place in the American League West at 32-48. "These projects, they probably look like they happen pretty quickly," Fisher said. "The reality is there is an incredible amount of work, time and effort from so many people's involvement to even bring us to today. "Our goal is to continue to build upon what we have, and building a team is like building anything else. Sometimes it takes more time than you want it to. It's like building the stadium. And we think that we have the pieces to make ourselves really successful." --Field Level Media
