Jose Mourinho is now one round away from taking Fenerbahce back into the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 17 years.
The storied coach's team surged into the Champions League qualifying play-offs by overturning a two-goal deficit on aggregate Tuesday with a 5-2 win against Feyenoord, coached by Robin van Persie.
Fenerbahce advanced 6-4 on aggregate score and faces Benfica — where Mourinho got his first head coach job 25 years ago — next, with a place in the 36-team league phase at stake.
The first leg is in Istanbul on Wednesday next week, with the return on August 27 at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon, where Mourinho — a two-time Champions League winner — lasted less than three months in 2000.
Benfica advanced on Tuesday after beating Nice 2-0 at home after winning the first leg by the same score in France last week.
Fenerbahce last played in the old group stage of the Champions League in the 2008-09 season, and its biggest rival, Galatasaray, is already in the August 28 main draw as the Turkish league champion.
Fenerbahce had lost 1-2 in the Netherlands last week and fell further behind in the second leg of the third qualifying round clash when Feyenoord defender Tsuyoshi Watanabe scored the opener in the 41st minute.
Mourinho saw his players rally quickly with two goals before halftime — the second by Colombia forward Jhon Durán, on a season-long loan from Saudi club Al Nassr.

Former Manchester United midfielder Fred padded the lead early in the second half, and Talisca — another former teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo — completed the scoring.
Rangers advanced to the play-offs 4-2 on aggregate against Viktoria Plzen despite a 2-1 loss on Tuesday in the Czech Republic.

The Scottish club will host the first leg of its play-off next week against Club Brugge, which got three second-half goals in a 3-2 comeback win on Tuesday over Salzburg to advance 4-2 on aggregate.
Salzburg — the former team of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland — was playing in the FIFA Club World Cup just six weeks ago but is unlikely to qualify for the next one in 2029, now missing out on Champions League play for the first time in seven seasons.
Russian-owned Pafos, the champion of Cyprus, beat Dynamo Kyiv of Ukraine 2-0 to advance 3-0 on aggregate. Pafos next faces Red Star Belgrade, the 1991 European Cup winner, which beat Lech Poznan 4-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw on Tuesday in Serbia.
Copenhagen beat its near neighbour, Malmö, 5-0, one week after a goalless draw on the other side of the Oresund Bridge that connects Denmark and Sweden. Copenhagen's reward is a two-legged play-off against Swiss champion Basel.
Qarabag of Azerbaijan routed North Macedonian champion Shkendija 5-1, and 6-1 on aggregate, to earn a play-off against Ferencvaros, a 3-0 winner in Budapest against Ludogorets of Bulgaria.
Kazakhstan's Kairat Almaty won a penalty shootout at Slovan Bratislava, after the teams were tied 1-1 on aggregate, and next travels across four time zones to Scotland for the play-off first leg against Celtic.

Guardiola Wants To Keep Spurs Target Savinho For 'Many Years' But...

Pep Guardiola wants to keep Savinho at Manchester City but won't stop players from leaving. Pep Guardiola wants to keep Manchester City winger Savinho for 'many years" but will not prevent any player from leaving if they are determined to quit the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola is aware that Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is interested in Savinho after Son Heung-min's departure and James Maddison's long-term injury. City goalkeeper Ederson has been linked with a move to Turkish side Galatasaray, following Guardiola's re-signing of the club's former youth academy graduate James Trafford from Burnley during the close season. Ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener at Wolves, the City manager stressed that neither Savinho nor fellow Brazilian Ederson had expressed a desire to move on. 'If they want to leave, they will come to me. If they want to leave, they will knock on my door," he told reporters on Friday. Savinho, who made 48 appearances for City in his debut season last year, has faced criticism for a lack of cutting edge. Although Guardiola is eager to keep the 21-year-old, he did not guarantee Savinho's presence at the club when the transfer window closes in September. 'I don't know. Tottenham or any other club who wants a player should call the club," he said. 'I am only concerned right now that Savinho will be with us for the rest of the season and hopefully many, many years because at 21 years old, with the potential he has, he plays a lot of minutes. 'He has to improve in the final decisions but he is an extraordinary player. Otherwise, he would not have played more than 3,000 minutes last season. 'But in the end, the desire of the players is above everything. Then they have to find an agreement with the club. If they don't make an agreement, the player will be here because the club spent money on that player." Guardiola also disclosed that Savinho will be sidelined for 'a few weeks" due to an injury sustained in last week's pre-season friendly against Palermo. City's midfield star Rodri, who missed most of last season with a serious knee injury, is expected to travel to Wolves despite a fitness setback. Rodri's latest injury issue has raised concerns about his durability for the demanding Premier League campaign, and Guardiola acknowledged the need to manage the 29-year-old's fitness carefully. 'Rodri is so close to coming back but it is important his knee is perfect," he said. 'He needs to play minutes in training sessions. 'What we want for him is not to come back and then step back. That would not be good because in this dynamic you cannot get rhythm. This competition is so demanding." Guardiola has sought to reduce his squad to avoid having unhappy players on the bench, leading to this week's decision to allow England winger Jack Grealish to join Everton. Grealish played a key role in City's treble-winning campaign in 2023 but struggled over the last two seasons amid reports of excessive partying off the pitch. 'I wish him all the best at a traditional club like Everton and hopefully he can play, play, and play," Guardiola said. Another player who might depart is James McAtee, who is close to finalising a move to Nottingham Forest. 'I would love to have Macca but I have too many players," Guardiola said.
