Alas Pilipinas Women falter vs. Vietnam to end dream run in AVC Nations Cup with silver

GMA Network14-06-2025
Alas Pilipinas Women's fairytale run at the 2025 AVC Women's Volleyball Nations Cup ended with a silver medal after they fell to Vietnam, 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 in the championship round on Saturday at the Dong anh Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The Filipinas simply had no answer to the tandem of Bich Tuyen and Tran Thi Thanh Thuy as the hosts, who dropped just one set throughout the tournament, turned the game into a one-sided affair to claim their third straight title.
The Filipinas, meanwhile, capped off their campaign at second place but with plenty of lessons moving forward.
Tuyen led the way with 20 points anchored on 16 attacks, two blocks and two aces while Thuy, famously called T4, tallied 17 markers on 13 attacks, three blocks, and one ace as they defended their home turf.
T4 and Tuyen wasted no time making their presence felt as they sent Vietnam to a 16-8 lead in the opening set before T4 wrapped it up with back-to-back hits from the open.
Alas kept it close early in the second set with Bella Belen tying things up at 10-all. But the reigning champions were quick to retaliate, answering with a pivotal 11-3 rampage — a stretch that saw the hosts unloading two aces from Tuyen to create a 21-13 lead.
World no. 28 Vietnam refused to look back since then as they pulled away for good in Set 3.
T4 soared from the pipe and punished Alas' floor defense to send Vietnam to a 14-7 cushion while another Tuyen and T4 took turns to put the punctuation in what has been a dominant showing from the hosts.
No Alas player managed to reach a double-digit mark with Alyssa Solomon churning out eight points while Shaina Nitura, who was injected late in their comeback attempt, finished with six markers.

Gilas Pilipinas Women rise to no. 39 in FIBA world rankings

Gilas Pilipinas Women made a notable leap in the global ladder after the national women's basketball team climbed five spots in the latest FIBA world rankings. The Filipinas soared from no. 44 to no. 39 just a month after their gallant campaign at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup in China. Gilas is also now the seventh best team in Asia and the highest-ranked Southeast Asian team. In the recent Asia Cup, the Patrick Aquino-helmed squad finished sixth overall behind a young crew that featured rising stars Naomi Panganiban, Sumayah Sugapong, Vanessa De Jesus, Kacey Dela Rosa, and Kent Pastrana with veteran center Jack Animam leading the way. The team broke through with a narrow 73-70 win against Lebanon that allowed the country to retain its Division A status. They then fell to South Korea in the qualification to semifinals with a 104-71 loss to bow out of contention. Gilas Pilipinas Women will now carry their newfound momentum into the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand this December, where they aim to reclaim the gold medal they lost in the previous edition after Indonesia's triumph. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Filipinas yield to Australia U23 in Serenity Cup group stage

The Philippine women's national football team Filipinas absorbed a 1-0 beating at the hands of Australia's U23 in the 2025 ASEAN Women's Championship (MSIG Serenity Cup) at the Viet Tri Stadium, Phu Tho, Vietnam on Sunday night.? The world No. 39 Filipinas couldn't draw strength from their 7-0 opening win at the expense of Timor-Leste a few days ago, and went empty-handed against the youth-laden Australian side to settle for a 1-0-1 (win-draw-loss) record in Group B.? With this, Myanmar provisionally claimed the top of the standing with back-to-back wins against Australia (2-1) and Timor-Leste (3-0) which included a decent +4 goal difference (GD). The Philippines, though, remained in contention with its +6 GD as two of the top teams are set to advance to the knockout stage which features crossover matches with the winners of Group A.? In 2022, the Nationals led by Sarina Bolden defeated Australia's U23 with a lone goal in the second half, where they also finished in second place of the group stage on their way to the title.? This time, Australia only needed the first half to set the tone of the match following Alana Jancevski's brilliantly angled left-footed shot that found the left corner of the net at the 45+1 minute. The Mark Torcaso-coached Filipinas rallied in the second half with multiple shots on target despite the Australian's tight defensive scheme but to no avail.? Olivia McDaniel then made a double save in the final minute of regular time to avoid digging themselves further into a hole. The Philippines and Myanmar dispute the top spot of Group B on Wednesday at LachTray Stadium, Haiphong at 8:30 p.m. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
