Manchester United transfer target breaks silence on summer move: "I'll get there"

Daily Mirror5 days ago
Manchester United are keen to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window and have been keeping an eye on Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma
Manchester United have been sent a come and get me plea by one of their transfer targets. Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens is one of the players being considered to strengthen the position and he is very keen on a move to Old Trafford.

Lammens is one of the players United are considering after a difficult campaign for Andre Onana, while Altay Bayindir didn't convince when he got a chance either. Onana was dropped by Ruben Amorim during the 2024/25 campaign, only for his back-up Bayindir to fail to take his chance in goal.

The situation has led to much speculation over potential targets this summer, with ambitious interest in Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma emerging. United even approached Villa over a loan deal for Martinez, only for their offer to be rejected out of hand, while Donnarumma is unlikely to swap Champions League winners for a side that finished 15th last season.

Lammens, a 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper, is clearly a much more attainable target for United at this stage. He is reportedly available for a fee of around £13m-17m after Antwerp sporting director Marc Overmars signed Taishi Brandon Nozawa to replace him.
He played the full 90 minutes in his side's 1-1 draw against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the league at the weekend. But speaking afterwards, it is clear that Lammens is courting a move away from Belgium.
' Manchester United are one of the best clubs, yes," he told reporters. "But you never know. It could also be a different club, or who knows, I might stay here, in any case, I try to keep my feet on the ground. When teams like that come along, I think you've earned it.'
He added: 'I certainly have enough confidence in myself. I think the most important thing is that my future team, whenever they arrive, has a plan in place. Ideally, that means playing immediately, but it's also possible I'll have to take a step in between.
'As long as there's a plan, it doesn't matter whether I'm ready for the next step or not. Everyone has their own career, their own path. Even if I don't take the right step right away, I'll get there.

'It could be within a few days, but also a few months or a year. I have people around me who help me with that, and that way I can focus on what I need to do.'
Royal Antwerp manager Stef Wils won't stand in his way if United do come calling. 'He's proven why,' he said, referring to the transfer interest. 'He has everything a modern goalkeeper needs, and as a young lad, he still has room to grow in a major league. He exudes calm and inspires confidence in his defenders, a plus on high balls.'

Man Utd and Newcastle on alert after club drop Benjamin Sesko interest

Manchester United and Newcastle's battle to sign Benjamin Sesko has taken a twist after a third club pulled out of the transfer race for the striker. Sesko has emerged as a top target for both Premier League teams, with RB Leipzig rejecting a £70million offer from the Magpies over the weekend. It is said Leipzig were happy with the overall sum of Newcastle's bid but not the payment structure, while United are reportedly 'ready to match' their rival's offer. But they are not the only clubs involved in the saga, with the Slovenian striker on the shortlist of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal after they failed to sign Victor Osimhen. As per The Athletic, Al-Hilal have also looked at Newcastle's Alexander Isak – who wants to leave St. James' Park for Liverpool – but now they believe the Swede and Sesko are unattainable. As a result, they have now entered talks with Liverpool over a deal for Darwin Nunez, who has been tipped to leave Anfield all summer. It is said the Uruguayan is now their top target and have informed the Reds of their interest, though a formal bid is yet to be made. Liverpool signed Nunez in 2022 in a deal worth up to £85m but the centre-forward hasn't been the elite goalscorer they hoped for, returning 40 goals in 143 games. Arne Slot gave the 26-year-old just eight starts in the Premier League last season, with the summer additions of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike casting further doubt on his Merseyside future. More Trending If Nunez does indeed move to Saudi Arabia, it could spark a chain reaction in the transfer market, with Liverpool more likely to make another bid for Isak after their opening £110m offer was immediately rejected. Eddie Howe's side are determined to keep their talisman, who scored 27 goals across all competitions last season and is considered one of the best strikers in the world. They value him at £150m but if they were to sell it may boost their chances of buying Sesko who recorded 21 goals last season and was previously pursued by Arsenal. It is said the 22-year-old is open to joining either Newcastle or Manchester United, with the former also eyeing up PSG's Goncalo Ramos as an alternative. McGlynn hails battle-ready Falkirk squad after draw with Dundee United

John McGlynn believes his Falkirk players showed they are Premiership-ready with their 2-2 home draw against Dundee United on opening day. The Bairns won back-to-back promotions under their experienced boss and the fans watched the Championship flag being unfurled before the game, marking their return to the top flight after a 15-year absence. On-loan Barnsley forward Max Watters scored his first United goal in the 39th minute with a terrific volley, but midfielder Dylan Tait levelled in the 50th minute with a fine finish. Ivan Dolcek restored the Tannadice side's lead in the 71st minute with his first goal for the club before home defender Ethan Ross equalised with a deflected strike two minutes later for a deserved share of the spoils. McGlynn said: 'I don't think we've got our eyes closed. We know that the margins are finer in this league. 'We'll all look to learn from that and we will need to learn from that. But there's so many positives to take. 'A lot of these players have played in League One, they've stepped up to the Championship dealt with that, and today, I think they looked like Premiership players against Premiership players. 'We were 15 years out of it, the same group of players almost, stepping up to the challenge, 5700 season tickets. 'Dundee United filled their allocation as well. So great atmosphere. 'People want to come and be entertained. That was entertainment. That was definitely entertainment.' United boss Jim Goodwin was proud of his under-strength side's efforts in gaining a point after they had advanced to the Conference League third qualifying round against Rapid Wien with a 2-0 aggregate win over Luxembourg side UNA Strassen on Thursday night. He said: 'It's really strange to be sitting here on the opening day of the season and talking about the number of injuries we have. 'But there's no getting away from it. There's no excuses here. 'We're missing some real key players. Our captain and vice-captain, Ross Graham and Will Ferry. Ferry was a suspension. 'Ryan Strain, Amar Fatah and Kristijan Trapanovski were all missing and they can be great options for us off the bench or starting the game. 'A draw away from home, more often than not in this league, is not a bad result. 'On the back of us playing in Europe on Thursday, with the short turnaround and the lack of recovery time, I think we've got to be satisfied with a point. 'It was only a couple of years ago we were travelling to Arbroath to kick off the Championship season. 'In the space of two years, we're slightly disappointed to pick up a point on the opening day of the Premiership but looking forward to a game in Europe against Rapid Wien. 'When you put things in perspective, we've come a long way in a short period of time.' Ferry will be back from suspension for the midweek trip to Austria and Goodwin hopes some others will be available, although Trapanovski will see a specialist about his hamstring problem on Monday. Celtic 1 St Mirren 0: Fans forced to wait for Flag Day party as McCowan wins it late after McGregor VAR call

Until then, Stephen Robinson's Buddies were threatening to ruin Celtic's presentation day. McCowan then stepped off the bench to hit the winner three minutes from time. Brendan Rodgers couldn't have asked for much more in terms of possession and set-up play. His side rattled the woodwork no less than THREE times and had a goal disallowed. Yet you can't help think that the narrow margin of victory only underlines his assessment reinforcements must be brought in ahead of the Champions League play-off. Celtic were worth their win in the end. But maybe winning by just one late goal will only help him get the signings he wants. For Buddies boss Robinson, this was another kick in the teeth. On the final day of last season he watched Celtic score deep into injury time to deny his men a result. Once again it was last-gasp drama that left him gutted. Celtic launch new away kit with trailer featuring Scottish music icon and Hoops legends On this evidence, though, the away supporters who backed their team to the hilt from start to finish have plenty to look forward to. They have a squad now - and not just a starting line-up - that's capable of standing up against the biggest and best teams in the league. Rodgers in the opposite dugout may question the backing he's getting from the boardroom. But there can be no doubt that Robinson's ambition is matched by the directors who have given him more spending power than any of his predecessors. Experienced players Scott Tanser and Liam Donnelly were unavailable for this one through injury. But it speaks volumes about his depth of squad that the likes of Alex Iacovitti and James Scott were fully fit and they didn't make the bench. Part of that was down to Robinson's bravery when it came to naming his line-up. Academy graduate Fraser Taylor will never win any awards for physicality. But what the wee man lacks in height and physique, he more than makes up for in technique and football intelligence. It still said a lot for his gaffer that he was willing to play him in the middle of the park when he could easily have gone brawn over brains. Robinson took the decision that if there was a venue to have Taylor's quick-thinking ability on the ball - that made him the League One Player of the Year last season on loan at Arbroath - then it was Celtic Park. He changed it at half-time by taking Taylor off and replacing him with striker Jonah Ayunga in a switch that saw Roland Idowu drop into midfield. It was a positive move aimed at putting the Celtic defence under more pressure with Robinson sensing that his team had an opportunity to get the victory by being more proactive. Rodgers didn't make any alterations at the break as he decided to persevere with the team he picked. He would have been relatively happy with the way his side played in the first-half. But the lack of cutting edge from middle to front was there for all to see. Benjamin Nygren came closest to scoring right before the whistle but keeper Shamal George made a really good save to turn the midfielder's shot up onto the crossbar. Apart from that, Celtic had plenty of the ball without doing enough with it. Kieran Tierney was lively and delivered some brilliant crosses from the left but target man Adam Idah was never in the right place at the right time. Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? By the hour mark the home fans were beginning to get anxious. They were up off their feet when Reo Hatate drilled a shot which clipped off defender Marcus Fraser, came down off the crossbar and out for a corner after clipping goalie George. The ball could have ended up anywhere. But it was a lucky escape for the visitors that it didn't finish in the back of their net. Rodgers was soon turning to his bench and telling James Forrest to get stripped for action having seen enough from bang-average Yang Hyunjun. The fact the South Korean was in the team at all felt like a message being sent out by Rodgers who is desperate for a new winger to be signed. Things just weren't going to plan for the defending champions. Losing Tierney after 65 minutes wasn't what they needed. When he pulled up and signalled to the bench he needed to be substituted, it didn't look anything too serious. And hopefully it's not. But if anyone needs a run of games without any fitness issues it's the Scotland defender. It just summed up how things were going for Celtic at that stage. In 68 minutes they had a goal disallowed. Callum McGregor smashed a terrific shot into the bottom corner after a bad mistime from Saints skipper Mark O'Hara on the edge of his own box. But replays showed the ball flicked off his arm and VAR Greg Aitken was right to instruct ref Don Robertson to chalk it off. Idah then blasted off the post. Saints were never out of it, though. With ten minutes to go sub Oisin Smyth almost scored with his first touch after stepping onto the park with his shot hitting Cameron Carter-Vickers when it could easily have hit the net. On 88 minutes, though, McCowan won the points. His shot took a deflection off O'Hara on its way past George but the former Dundee star couldn't care less as he ran away to celebrate. 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
