NHRC writes to Odisha DGP and Chief Secretary in matter related to KIIT Nepalese student suicide case
The National Human Rights Commission has written a letter to Odisha's Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) over the issue of a Nepalese student who was found dead at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar. Earlier, NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo said that the organisation has taken cognisance of the death of a Nepalese student at KIIT. 'We will take further action after the report comes, if needed, our team will go there,' said Mr. Kanoongo.
Speaking about the previous incident where another girl student was found dead on the KIIT campus, Mr. Kanoongo said the university administration tried to suppress the issue. 'During our investigation, it came out that the student was sexually assaulted, pornographic content was filmed, and then she was blackmailed. When the girl complained to the college administration, instead of informing the police, the university administration tried to have a compromise and suppress the issue. Prima facie, the university administration was the culprit, so we asked the UGC to take strict action, as the environment was not conducive there,' he said.
In response to the tragedy, the University Grant Commission (UGC) has constituted a four-member fact-finding committee under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Nageshwar Rao, to look into the recent alleged suicide deaths at KIIT.The committee will examine the circumstances surrounding these incidents, ensure compliance with student welfare and safety regulations, and suggest measures to prevent such incidents.
The committee also includes Shashikala Wanjari, Vice-Chancellor of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), and HCS Rathore, Former Vice Chancellor of Central University of South Bihar, Gaya, as a member and Sunita Siwach, Joint Secretary of UGC as the coordination officer, according to a statement from UGC on Friday. Earlier in February, Prakriti Lamsal also died by suicide at the same university.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), a corruption watchdog, alleged that some of the land in Kavre district, was later allowed to be swapped with other land, or sold at a higher price, causing a loss to the state. The allegations were set out in a charge sheet filed by the commission on Thursday (June 5, 2025) at the Special Court in Kathmandu. The commission demanded that Nepal be ordered to pay a fine of 185.85 million Nepali rupees ($1.35 million). If found guilty, he could also be sentenced to up to 17 years in jail. A spokesperson for Patanjali in India denied any wrongdoing, saying it bought the land privately through due legal process. 'Patanjali has not acquired any government land. It is unfair to drag our name into local political vendetta actions and proceedings,' S.K. Tijarawala, Patanjali's spokesperson, told Reuters in a text message. The commission also charged 92 others, including some former Ministers and officials, some of whom are already dead. Yaga Raj Regmi, information officer of the court, said Nepal would receive a formal court notice giving him 15 days in which to present himself at court and the hearing would start after that.

Bachupally murder case: Man arrested for killing woman, dumping body in bag
The Cyberabad police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a large travel bag and abandoned in a secluded corner of Bachupally earlier this week. The accused, identified as Vijay Toppa alias Wilson, was picked up from Bowrampet by the Balanagar Special Operation Team (SOT) and Bachupally police on Thursday evening. He later confessed to killing the victim, 33-year-old Tara Bohra, during an argument over her pregnancy. The case came to light on the morning of 4 June when a local watchman discovered the bag in Vijaya Durga Owners Association Colony. Upon inspection, police found the woman's body inside. A murder case was booked by the Bachupally police. Investigators said both the victim and the accused were Nepalese nationals who had met on Facebook and developed a relationship. Tara, a married woman with two children, arrived in Hyderabad on April 15 and began living with Vijay in a rented room in Indiramma Colony, Bowrampet. Vijay was working as a chef at a local fast food stall. According to the police, at around 5 a.m. on May 23, a heated argument broke out between the two. In a fit of rage, Vijay strangled Tara using a nylon bag string, stuffed her body into a travel bag, and later dumped it in the colony where it was found days later. Based on CCTV footage and technical evidence, five special teams launched a manhunt. Their efforts led to Vijay's arrest from Bowrampet. Police have seized both the victim's and the accused's mobile phones, the travel bag used to transport the body, and the nylon thread used to commit the murder. Vijay is being produced before the court for a judicial remand.

Kerala government revises remuneration of guest lecturers
The State government on Friday issued an order revising the remuneration of guest lecturers employed in institutions functioning under the Higher Education and Technical Education departments. The daily wage of guest lecturers with University Grants Commission (UGC) qualifications will increase to ₹2,200, subject to a maximum monthly remuneration of ₹50,000. Others will be eligible for a remuneration of ₹1,800 per day, with a maximum monthly cap of ₹45,000. Currently, guest lecturers who satisfy the eligibility criteria stipulated by the UGC are paid ₹1,750 per day, capped at ₹43,750 per month, while those without such qualifications receive ₹1,600 per day, with a monthly ceiling of ₹40,000. In a statement, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu said the revision was made on the basis of long-standing demands and recommendations for wage revision in line with the pay revision notified by the UGC in 2018. Numerous petitions had also been submitted by guest lecturers to the government, including at the Navakerala Sadas programme.
