Macy Gray remembers her debut album - and her Glastonbury streakers
In 1999, her enormous hit track I Try was already glinting with the gold of an all-time classic, even as it continued to dominate charts all over the world and propel her album to number one.
The 31-year-old single mother of three from Canton, Ohio, earned a Grammy for the song, and the sky seemed to be the limit from there.
But in the following quarter-century, despite continued success with her second and third albums, Gray earned a complex reputation, once famously forgetting the words to the Star-Spangled Banner and other similar mishaps. It began to look like she was standing in her own way.
Among journalists, her name became synonymous with diva tendencies and uncooperative interviews. As a result, the prospect of speaking with Gray as she prepares to celebrate the milestone anniversary of On How Life Is was more than a little daunting – especially given that she just this year stormed off reality show The Masked Singer, once again displaying a fiery temper to fans.
But when Gray sits down with Metro to discuss her upcoming new album, the legacy of her debut, and her past regrets, she's unexpectedly softspoken and attentive – if not overly forthcoming at first.
'I was listening to it the other day,' Gray says of her breakout hit, I Try. 'That song is on autopilot in my brain. It's like walking and talking – you don't even think about it anymore.'
While many artists grow weary of their most well-known work, Gray remains deeply connected to the record that changed her life: 'People ask me if I'm tired of it, or if I'm over it… but I'm just not. I love that album, it helped change my life, and I still love performing it.'
For Gray, On How Life Is captures the essence of a transitional time, personally and universally. 'It was that moment everybody has where you're trying to grow up,' she recalls.
'You're in your twenties, your mom and society are pressuring you, but you're still figuring it out. You're supposed to be the sh*t, but you're not quite there yet.' That honesty, paired with Gray's signature voice and genre-bending style, has allowed the album to endure the test of time.
Contrary to her reputation, she seems more than willing to acknowledge her past mistakes, and one can't help but wonder if her notoriety is entirely earned – or just the product of a sensitive, artistic spirit being thrust suddenly into a brutal spotlight.
When asked what advice she'd give her younger self, she sighs and admits: 'I don't know what I would tell me, because I know I was at a point in my life where you could have given me the best advice ever, and I probably wouldn't have listened, you know?'
As for regrets about the last 25 years, Gray says there are 'a million things' she'd go back and change, and, when prompted to expand, she admits: 'There's always somebody that got away. Of course, you want to do smarter things with your money. I probably would have moved. I don't think I would have stayed in Los Angeles. I probably… I had so many opportunities to live overseas and I blew them off. I probably would have moved, that's one thing, somewhere else.'
She even seems willing to discuss her disastrous reality TV career, revealing light-heartedly that she turned down a stint on Celebrity Big Brother because: 'They told me they only had one bathroom. I didn't know if I could have made it through that.'

But not one to dwell unnecessarily, Gray is quick to assure that 'her whole life has been a highlight,' and for now, she's looking towards the future.
'I want to make more good records. I want to be a better singer, better on stage. I'm just focused on getting better, really,' she says with real conviction. That dedication is the heart of the advice she'd pass on to rising artists: 'Keep practicing. Keep getting better. Don't forget how you got there.'
Her upcoming album will feature new collaborations, though she's keeping names under wraps for now. She lights up at the mention of newer artists like Lola Young and Doechii, and it's evident that Gray remains as passionate about her craft as ever, even if she sometimes finds it challenging to navigate the public relations side of things.
'Doechii's awesome – refreshing. I hadn't thought about it, but yeah, I should reach out to her,' she says of a possible collaboration with the Anxiety hitmaker. 23 June: London, Union Chapel 24 June: Manchester, New Century Hall 27 June: Glasgow, Old Fruitmarket

As she kicks off her UK anniversary tour, the 57-year-old is well aware that entertainment offers people vital relief in today's world. Or as she puts it, people are 'just dying for an excuse to party.' And she's prepared to give it to them.
Her shows promise a full-throttle celebration: 'We got the best music, and we're gonna have fun—dancing, singing, screaming. It's a good night out, a great show.'
The UK, Gray says, has always held a special place in her heart. 'Every country, every city has its own personality, but the UK… they're ready to celebrate. Almost on the edge of their seats, like just waiting for you to do something so they can just get up and go, you know?'
Her Glastonbury performance is still one of her most vivid career memories, and she's quick to say she wouldn't rule out an eventual return to Worthy Farm. 'When we got to I Try, it was like this sea of people singing every word. You can't get that feeling anywhere else.'
The traces of weary disinterest displayed through parts of the interview dissipate when she's reminded of the time a naked couple streaked across the stage at her Glastonbury performance. One can't help but think we're getting a brief glimpse of the real Macy as she belly laughs at the memory.
'So I was singing, and all of a sudden this – and they were older – like they were, like, skinny, you know, little bit wrinkly, and they just ran across the stage, butt naked, and they waved at me, and then they ran off,' she says animatedly through laughter. 'And that was it. I can see it, like, second by second. I don't remember what I did. I was so stuck on them, I don't remember if I stopped.'
When Gray really gets talking, her famous voice, with all its quirks, is on full display. Unkindly described in the past as 'a cross between Minnie Mouse and Marge Simpson,' it's not surprising that it's been a source of insecurity for the singer, given how much the media commented on it at the beginning of her career.
'It's true I used to be really quiet in public because people would laugh or have comments,' she says of her voice. 'That's gone away a lot since I've gotten older, but sometimes I still kind of think twice before I say something.'
Her perspective on fame has also evolved. She notes how different the industry is now, especially with the rise of platforms like TikTok. 'You can make a song and put it out the next day. That's new. It's great for the fans, but it's a different world. I'm adjusting.' More Trending
Gray's soulful, timeless music remains as relevant today as ever, but many of her inspirations and mentors have passed away, leaving her to navigate her evolution as an artist on her own. 'I don't think I would be making the music that I make had I not listened to everything Prince put out, you know.'
But the late legend was more than a source of musical inspiration to her: 'We used to talk, and he was always giving me really good advice, you know, he always answered the phone, which I thought was super cool. But there's a ton of influences. I'm a big Donna Summer fan. I got to spend some time with her, and I learned a lot from her.'
Despite all the changes, Gray sees music and entertainment as a unifying force, even as the world grows more fractured. 'You go to a festival, and you're not thinking about who voted for who. Everybody's singing the same song, dancing together. Entertainment is essential right now.'
At 25 years since her debut, Macy Gray isn't slowing down or apologising unnecessarily for the times she's stumbled. She's still experimenting, still growing, still trying her best to weather a harsh industry with a sensitive disposition and a wide-open heart. That may not always be pretty, but for Macy Gray, you can be certain that it will always be authentic.

'I hate modern dating after hosting one of Netflix's biggest ever shows'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video In a world of reality TV showmances, wannabe influencers and frustratingly toxic men, Love Is Blind UK hosts Emma and Matt Willis are a breath of fresh air amid the deluge of dating shows. I was completely charmed by the celebrity couple last year when I interviewed them for the first season of the long-awaited UK spin-off of one of Netflix's most popular reality shows. They were endearingly nervous about their debut as a married couple helming a show about finding love, shared playful quips about what to order for lunch and had a quiet confidence that proved their real-life and on-screen chemistry. When I met up with them again this year for Metro to discuss season 2, which launches today, the nerves had evaporated, but all the charm had, happily, stayed. For those not in the know, the premise of the hit reality show is all about proving that lasting love is so much more than skin deep. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. So, 30 people ready for marriage date each other in 'pods' for a week, getting to know each other from behind a wall without seeing each other, and the lucky couples who make a connection get engaged. By the end of the experiment, after meeting one another in the flesh and spending time together in the outside world, they must decide whether they will say 'I do' at the altar. Throughout the process, our trusty co-hosts jet in and out to guide them through from one stage to the next. As we kick off our chat about their return, the 17 years of marriage between the Big Brother presenter and Busted star shines through when I point out their matching blue clothes. 'Last year, we were quite nervous. This year, we were much more relaxed,' Emma says about returning to the show. They were well aware of the tough task ahead of them when launching the latest spin-off (there are currently eight international versions). 'We really wanted the UK one to be as good as all of the others and I think it surpassed our expectations, because it had everything. 'It had heart, it had a very British sense of humour,' the TV host adds, with hopes that season two meets the high standard season one set for fans. The British power couple, who share three children, have had their ups and downs over the years, but if hosting Love Is Blind has made them 'grateful' for one thing, it is that they met in the early 2000s before online dating took off. 'The one thing I've taken [from hosting the show] – and it's not so much a reflection on our relationship, but a reflection on the world of dating generally – is, I'm really glad I'm not single,' Emma says. 'I wouldn't want to be on dating apps. I know a lot of people on them, and they just moan about them all the time. I think I'd get so frustrated with doing everything on a device.' The idea of meeting organically (a more and more foreign concept for Gen Z) is what attracted them to this show in the first place. 'I think that is a whole world better than trying to navigate [the] beginning of a relationship through a phone, which must be so difficult,' Emma adds. Matt agrees: 'Absolutely, I think messages can get so misconstrued.' When I ask them about their dating app green and red flags, we briefly go on a side tangent about the turn-off factor of posting a photo of yourself holding a fish (it's a whole thing) to a completely baffled Emma. As such, Matt decides a fish picture 'doesn't sound cool' while Emma ponders hers would 'probably be an overly posed picture'. 'I think if it were someone in a pair of shorts and nothing else… I'm getting the ick just thinking about it,' she jokes. So, naturally, I ask if the show had been around when they were single, would they have gone on it – and their answers explained a lot about why they are such a perfect fit. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Emma called the process 'fantastic' but had one caveat. 'I don't know if I could get married after six weeks because I'm a chronic overthinker and I like to know everything,' she admits with a wry smile. Matt, on the other hand, is ready to leap headfirst, joking, 'I could. I'd be like, 'Let's do it.'' He shares: 'I think it'd be really fun to see what that experience is like, talking to someone and doing the experiment. I think it'd be such an exciting thing to do.' Lucky for them, neither has to worry about getting hitched to a near-stranger in six weeks or navigating the treacherous world of Tinder. They'll happily watch on, however. Season one saw plenty of highs and lows, with fan-favourite couple Bobby and Jasmine recently announcing they're expecting their first child. It's clear both Emma and Matt are delighted, with the former recalling that the loved-up pair were 'hook, line and sinker from the beginning', and she could tell they were 'totally smitten' right up to the reunion. Matt adds he's 'so stoked for them'. Of course, the premiere season also included some controversial characters, not least Sam, who was briefly engaged to Nicole (now married to Benaiah), who became the latest 'toxic' reality TV man to spark concerned fan discourse. Viewers can expect different things from the new episodes, Emma teases. 'I think they're a really likeable cast. There's not really any divisive characters, I don't think. Obviously, Sam last year was quite a divisive character. I don't think we have a Sam,' she says. Love Is Blind marks the latest show the pair have jointly tackled in recent years, in addition to their candid therapy docuseries, Change Your Mind, Change Your Life. While working together might be out of the question for some couples, that's not the case for these two. Matt explains: '[I love] everything about [my] job, but then I always have to be away from Emma, away from the family. So the chance to work with her is brilliant. 'I've always been jealous of her job. I've been in a sweaty tour bus with stinky boys. This is way more fun, got a glam squad now, love it.' As for what's next, Emma is clearly enthusiastic about the future of their professional partnership, saying they're ready to do 'eight more seasons' of Love Is Blind. But they have other ideas brewing as well. 'I'd like to do something adventurous. I don't know if it's a travel show – just some kind of adventure. I love shows like Race Across the World. I think that's so much fun, but there's a point to it,' Emma says. More Trending As in sync as ever, Matt agrees. Who knows what's next for this dynamic duo, who are proving themselves to be a formidable force on British reality TV. For now, however, they have a brand new cohort of unlucky-in-love singles to welcome to the pods. So, let the blush-inducing courtship commence. The first four episodes of Love Is Blind UK season two are out now. Got a story? Killer John left reeling in Emmerdale as new Nate evidence comes to light
John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) is in for a shock when it's revealed that Nate's death in Emmerdale is not all wrapped up in a bow as he thought – there's some damning evidence floating around that could yet bring him to justice. This is not good news and could mean all the hard work he put in framing dead man Owen for the murder was all for nothing. He's even managed to get Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) off his back after he came dangerously close to discovering the truth. Robert figured out that Owen had an alibi and that John had been to his house the day before he was found dead. But John carefully orchestrated things to discredit Robert in both the villagers' eyes and sister Vic's (Isabel Hodgins) both by portraying him as a scorned ex, and a threat to nephew Harry's safety. Now John just has to worry about the fact that actual, credible evidence is about to come to light. DC Cole puts Cain (Jeff Hordley) on edge when he's told they need to discuss Nate's murder. There is new evidence, which they need to discuss. Cain relays this to John, who is immediately struck with a sense of impending doom. It opens wounds for Cain and Tracy (Amy Walsh), who thought they could put the nature of Nate's death to bed and begin to work through their loss. But a fresh round of questioning reignites the pain. The elusive removal man is finally tracked down and suspicions are raised when Tracy shows him a photo and he doesn't recognise the man – Nate – who supposedly hired him. More Trending The police question him and he confirms it was in fact Owen who paid for his service. Of course, John has got involved here – it appears he has paid the man off. Coronation Street confirms new love interest for Dee-Dee after killer Joel
Coronation Street favourite Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) has the chance of romance in upcoming episodes. But bearing in mind the fact that she's just settling into motherhood after a complicated start with her baby Laila, embarking on a new relationship is a tricky thing to navigate. And there's also the fact that she was left badly traumatised by how her last relationship turned out. Dee-Dee fell for fellow solicitor Joel Deering (Calum Lill), but it wasn't long before she discovered he was married and had a child. He insisted he and his wife were separated and she confirmed this and insisted Joel was a good man, but it took a while for him to regain Dee-Dee's trust. Eventually the pair got engaged. Deeply religious Dee-Dee believed that sex before marriage was wrong, but Joel persuaded her otherwise. It was eventually revealed to viewers that Joel was the person who was behind the disappearance of Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) – something Roy Cropper (David Neilson) had been imprisoned for. As Lauren's story was uncovered it became clear that Joel was a sick and twisted man. When Dee-Dee discovered his crimes she was obviously appalled – and even more so because she was by then pregnant with his child. The knowledge of what Joel had done meant that Dee-Dee initially felt she wouldn't be able to bond with the baby, Laila, and she decided to give her up for adoption. After much soul-searching she recently decided she wanted to be Laila's mum. She's now co-parenting her with her brother James (Jason Callender), who had wanted to adopt her. This is all a lot of baggage to take into a new relationship, so in upcoming episodes when Dee-Dee realises that she's very attracted to Ollie, a new client and someone who previously flirted with her in the Rovers, she's hesitant to act on it. More Trending She tells Alya (Sair Khan) she really likes Ollie, but there's a conflict of interest because of him being a client. She tells Ollie it wouldn't be right to get into a relationship with him, but when he goes to kiss her she kisses him back, letting her heart rule her head for once. She tells him she's going to need to take things slowly, and later reaffirms this to James. She tells her brother she really likes this new man she's met, but she's wary of getting her heart broken again. There's also Laila to consider, and when Ollie spots Dee-Dee in the shop with her daughter in her pram, Dee-Dee asks him to meet her for a drink later so she can explain about her home situation.
