Yankees-Twins series finale delayed by rain at the Stadium
At 6:08 p.m., the Yankees made the announcement. The tarp went on the field following batting practice, with the Yanks seeking to complete a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins.
When the game begins, the Twins will send their right-handed ace Joe Ryan to the mound against Yankees' rookie Cam Schlittler, making his sixth big-league start.
Following Wednesday's game, the Yankees are set to fly to St. Louis to begin a three-game series Friday night against the Cardinals.

Expectations return at Utah following disappointing 2024 season
Kyle Whittingham considered making his 21st season at Utah his last. Win a championship, walk away would have been a perfect ending. A disappointing season changed Whittingham's mind. A sour note was not the way he was going to end a run that included consecutive Pac-12 championships and seven 10-win seasons. 'I couldn't stomach going out on that, with that season, as frustrating as it was and as discouraging as it was,' Whittingham said. 'It just didn't sit well with anybody, but most of all me and so I thought, 'Hey, that's not going to be the final act of my deal. I got to come back and try to get the ship right and get back on track.'' Whittingham hoped to go out on top after 20 seasons. The Utes were loaded, picked to finish first in their first Big 12 season and a potential College Football Playoff team. Utah instead floundered, losing seven straight games at one point to finish 5-7. Whittingham opted to return to Salt Lake City and has the type of team that could produce a quick bounce back. Utah's defense has been one of the nation's best under Whittingham and will likely be stout again with several key players back. The offense will have a new look with two additions from New Mexico: offensive coordinator Jason Beck and dual-threat quarterback Devon Dampier. The Lobos were fourth nationally in total offense a year ago with Beck calling the shots and Dampier running the plays, so the Utes should be explosive in their new-look offense. 'We really just want to put the right guys in the right places to make plays," Beck said. 'We want to adapt to what our strengths are and play to those strengths. We're going to go, not at a fast tempo, but we're going no huddle.' Adding Dampier Utah's quarterback situation the past few years revolved around Cameron Rising. He was superb in 2021 and 2022 but struggled with injuries his final two years. Dampier gives the Utes a dimension they haven't had. The 5-foot-11 junior was one of the nation's best quarterbacks last season, beating teams with his arm and legs. Dampier threw for 2,768 yards and 12 touchdowns — with 12 interceptions — while adding 1,166 yards and 19 TDs rushing. 'He's got that 'it' factor that you look for in quarterbacks. He's got the field general mentality that you look for,' Whittingham said. "He's a guy that everybody gravitates towards. There's no doubt who's in charge on offense.' Dominating D Utah annually has one of the best, most physical defenses in the country. This season should be no different, even after losing numerous players to graduation. The Utes' front line should again be stout and the linebacking corps is solid, anchored by Lander Brown. Smith Snowden and Tao Johnson also are back in a secondary that could be among the best in the Big 12. 'The defense has been very consistent, something that you can count on from year to year,' Whittingham said. 'Can't remember the last time we've had a real down year defensively and so the defense just needs to do what they've been doing for a lot of years.' Schedule Utah has a tough season opener on the road, playing at UCLA on Aug. 30 before hosting Cal Poly and Wyoming. The Utes open Big 12 play at home against No. 23 Texas Tech and face No. 11 Arizona State two weeks later. Arizona looking for bounce back in second season under coach Brent Brennan
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona's first season under coach Brent Brennan did not go as planned. Plagued by key injuries on defense and an offense that sputtered at times, the Wildcats took a step back last year after building momentum under previous coach Jedd Fisch. 'When you have a tough season like we did a year ago, you've got to fix what is broken and then you have to put those pieces together," Brennan said. Arizona appeared to have the pieces in place to continue the success it had under Fisch before he left to coach at Washington. It didn't pan out. Injuries to three of their best defensive players and an inconsistent offense — despite having All-American receiver Tetairoa McMillan — led to a 4-8 finish after winning 10 games the year before. The Wildcats retooled for their second season under Brennan, adding speed and skill at receiver and running back to complement quarterback Noah Fifita. Arizona also brought in offensive coordinator Seth Doege, a Mike Leach disciple who had success at Marshall, and promoted Danny Gonzales — the former New Mexico head coach — to stabilize a defense that struggled last season, particularly against the run. 'The expectation around here, 'God, you guys have been bludgeoned, so no one thinks we're going to be worth a darn,'' Gonzales said. 'That's outstanding to me because all we get to do is talk about the end." Finding Fifita Fifita had a breakout 2023 after starting the season as a backup, throwing for more than 2,800 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions. He wasn't quite as productive last season, throwing for 2,958 yards, but with 12 interceptions to 18 touchdowns while completing 60% of his passes. 'I think that the step back for Noah Fifita is my fault, not his,' Brennan said. 'We didn't do a good enough job running the football. We didn't do a good enough job protecting him, which I think we've done. We've made some moves in the direction of making that better right now.' Replacing McMillan Arizona has a big hole to fill after the departure of McMillan, one of the best receivers in program history. The Wildcats will try to make up for the loss of his production by spreading the ball around to what could be five speedy receivers in the regular rotation. Four of those are transfers, including Javin Whatley, who caught 108 passes for 1,810 yards and 12 touchdowns in four seasons at Chattanooga. 'I felt like we were missing some people on the other side of T-Mac, like we needed to have more, we needed more speed,' Brennan said. 'I think we've added that in the offseason.' Dialing up the D Arizona took a step back defensively last season after making inroads under Fisch. The Wildcats were one of the worst defensive teams in the Big 12, exacerbated by injuries to linebacker Jacob Manu, defensive back Treydan Stukes and safety Gunner Maldonado. Arizona has most of its secondary back, including Stukes and Genesis Smith, but multiple new players up front. Schedule Arizona has a chance to get its 2025 season off to a good start with five of its first six games at home. The Wildcats open against Hawaii on Aug. 30, with home games against Weber State, No. 17 Kansas State, Oklahoma State and BYU after that.
