Protest held demanding Tamil as compulsory subject in Pondicherry schools
Led by movement president Su Bhavanan, the protestors also demanded the establishment of a separate education board for Puducherry, the immediate formation of a Tamil Development Corporation, and the withdrawal of the decision to shut down the Puducherry Institute of Linguistic and Cultural Studies.
They further called for the scrapping of the CBSE curriculum and a complete overhaul of the current education policy to better reflect the region's linguistic and cultural identity.
Former chief minister V Narayanasamy, Leader of the Opposition and DMK State Organiser R Siva, Speaker SP Sivakumar, and MLA Sampath extended their support and congratulated the protestors for raising the issue.

Stalin woos youth, says DMK govt working for their uplift
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin made a strong pitch to woo youth towards DMK in the upcoming assembly elections. He announced govt would start giving laptops to college students, countering AIADMK's charges of DMK halting the free laptop scheme. "Youth are the foundation of Tamil society. Primary goal of the Dravidian model govt is to enable growth of youth. This govt is for the youth," Stalin said on Wednesday after distributing appointment orders to around 2,300 youth recruited through state municipal administration department. "Since education alone is not enough, govt is creating job opportunities as well," Stalin said, adding that more than one lakh youth were given jobs through TNPSC, TRB and TNUSB, more than three lakh jobs were provided through Naan Mudhalvan scheme while another 2.65 lakh got employment through job fairs organised by labour department. Stalin said govt was also creating a conducive environment for attracting investments, which spurs economic growth resulting in job creation to benefit youth. "Peaceful ambience, proper maintenance of law and order, skillful youth, requisite infrastructure and schemes rolled out with foresight are helping TN remain on top," he said. Efforts have begun for generation of more jobs in Dravidian model govt 2.0 too after 2026, he added. Political analyst A Ramasamy said such initiatives consolidate DMK's support base. "Schemes such as Naan Mudhalvan mainly attract students from economically disadvantaged groups. These programmes targeting youth are helping the party consolidate its base," he said. However, professor and economist Krishna Raj said the job figures required closer scrutiny. "Filling one lakh govt vacancies is good. But where are the remaining jobs that were created? If these are in the industrial or informal sector, they may lack social security, insurance or benefits," he said.

Teacher suspended for casteist remarks
Trichy: A teacher at a govt-aided school in Nagapattinam was suspended on Tuesday for making derogatory remarks against students of a particular community during her class. This follows protests by parents and community members. The incident occurred at a minority-administered school near VOC Road on Aug 1. Sources said Maryam Francis, a Tamil teacher for Class XI, commented about some students' community and their ancestral occupation in class. The students told their parents about it. Outraged parents went to the school and demanded that the administration remove her for the remarks. Since no action was taken, around a hundred members of the thevar community, led by Mukkulathu Puligal Katchi, marched towards the office of the superintendent of police on Aug 3. Following police assurance of action, they dispersed. The community outfit submitted a petition at Velipalayam police station in this regard. Subsequently, the school education department recommended that the school take action. On Tuesday, the administration issued the order suspending the teacher.

DMK to stage protest against centralised recruitment for Jipmer jobs
Leader of Opposition and DMK convenor R. Siva said his party would stage a protest in front of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (Jipmer) on Friday against the practice of imposing user fee for services and the centralised recruiting policy that would deepen the marginalisation of local job-seekers. In a statement, Mr. Siva expressed concern that, despite the long-pending demand for increased local representation, the institution's adoption of the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) model, based on the AIIMS in Delhi, would further reduce employment prospects for candidates from the region. The DMK leader also took exception to the bilingual (Hindi and English) nature of entrance tests and the special age relaxation offered to Union Government employees, stating that these measures placed Tamil and English-speaking local candidates at a clear disadvantage. He called upon Jipmer authorities to revert to the earlier recruitment system for nursing and Group B and C posts in place of the CRE, and to reserved 50% of posts for domicile job aspirants. According to the DMK leader, Jipmer had, on July 22, announced that recruitment to 454 vacancies for nursing officers, 446 in Puducherry and eight in Yanam, would be held through CRE. He pointed out that when Jipmer conducted its recruitments, many local aspirants had managed to secure remunerative job positions. However, the adoption of a common entrance test will result in local job avenues being opened to candidates across India. 'We will oppose a recruitment model that allows candidates who do not know the local language to enter jobs that require dealing with primarily poor patients and is exclusionary for the unemployed youth in the region', he said. Jipmer, which owes a large part of its success to the access to Puducherry's land, water, and power, should not turn its back on the local people now, Mr. Siva said.
