Malegaon blast verdict: M.P. BJP leaders seek apology from Congress, Digvijaya Singh

The Hindu5 days ago
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday (July 31, 2025) demanded apologies from the Congress for 'crafting narratives like Hindu terrorism' after a court acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.
A special NIA court in Mumbai, in its judgment, said that the prosecution 'failed to prove the case' and that the accused 'deserved the benefit of doubt' while acquitting Ms. Thakur, Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit and five others. Six people had lost their lives in the blast on September 29, 2008, in Malegaon city of Maharashtra's Nashik district.
Former M.P. Chief Minister Uma Bharti welcomed the verdict and said that the case was used to 'draft a theory of saffron terrorism' while accusing Congress leader and former CM Digvijaya Singh of being its 'originator'.
'The definition of saffron terrorism was coined during this case. Its originator was Digvijaya Singh ji and he was doing this work at the behest of [Congress leader] Rahul Gandhi. To defame Hindutva all over the world, the term saffron terrorism was coined in comparison to Islamic terrorism. And to prove the term, innocent people were made victims,' Ms. Bharti said, while claiming that Ms. Thakur and Lt. Col. Purohit faced severe torture in prison.
While specifying that terrorism has no colour, Ms. Bharti claimed that the term 'saffron terrorism' was coined by those who were trying to appease the minorities. She asked what action will be taken against those who 'conspired against the Hindu community'.
M.P. CM Mohan Yadav also took to X to hail the verdict and said that it is a 'blow to the Congress' narrow-minded mentality'.
'This verdict is a strong response to those who insult Sanatan Dharma, sadhus-saints, and the saffron flag. The Congress should publicly apologise to all Sanatani people,' he wrote.
Meanwhile, Shyam Bhavarlal Sahu, an Indore-based businessman who was discharged from the case in December 2017, said that all the accused had been 'framed in a fabricated case'.
'I was framed under 25-30 charges in the case but we have received justice now. The Congress' conspiracy has been exposed. The party should apologise for its conspiracy, though I don't think it will,' Mr. Sahu said, speaking to news agency PTI.
'While I was in jail after my arrest, my elder brother Mohan Sahu used to come and support me during court appearances. During an appearance, he suffered a heart attack in front of my eyes and died about half-an-hour later. I could not do anything to save him,' said Mr. Sahu, who was arrested in October 2008.

PM Modi Felicitated By Har Har Mahadev Chants At NDA Meet

Legislative business in both Houses remains stalled as the Opposition parties are demanding an immediate debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The issue, which triggered major protests on Monday, has deepened the deadlock and disrupted parliamentary proceedings. Deputy Speaker Jagdambika Pal, who chaired the afternoon session yesterday, pointed out that not a single bill has been passed since the Monsoon Session began on July 21. Meanwhile, yesterday's Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned following the demise of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren. Key leaders from the BJP, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Kiren Rijiju, are expected to participate in today's session. From the opposition, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, along with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, are also likely to attend. This is the third consecutive week of disruptions in Parliament, with no signs of a breakthrough. The Monsoon Session of the Parliament began on July 21 and is scheduled to run until August 21. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the BJP-led NDA parliamentary party meeting today, marking the first such gathering during the current session and the first in quite some time. The meeting is expected to focus on floor coordination and strategy amid the ongoing impasse.

We Have Proof, Will Present In Court: Tejashwi Yadav On EC Irregularities In Bihar Voter Rolls

"A response will be given... Many names are missing from the voter list, and we have several irregularities by the Election Commission with us. We will send this to the Election Commission and also present it in court," Tejashwi told reporters before leaving for Ranchi to attend the last rites of veteran leader Shibu Soren. Yadav further elaborated, "We have demanded booth-wise data because many names have been deliberately excluded. For example, Vyas ji's name is missing. In some houses, over 50 voters have been removed. These are not minor errors; they are serious irregularities, and we have proof. We will send this evidence to the Election Commission and also submit it before the court." His remarks come amid an ongoing controversy over claims that he possesses dual voter ID cards. The Election Commission has issued a notice to Tejashwi, asking him to provide the EPIC number that he claimed was deleted from the Bihar voter list, despite the poll body stating that his name is present in the draft electoral roll. The BJP has sharply criticised Tejashwi, alleging that holding two voter ID cards is a criminal offence and demanding strict action against him. Meanwhile, Yadav confirmed that the RJD's planned "Vote Adhikar Yatra" has been postponed following the demise of Shibu Soren. "There has been a schedule change, but the new date for the Yatra will be announced soon," he said. Speaking about Shibu Soren's death, Yadav expressed deep sorrow. 'We received the sad news yesterday. We are now heading to Ranchi to pay our last respects. Shibu Soren ji fought for the poor, the underprivileged, and especially for tribal rights. He was also a long-time ally of my father and the RJD-JMM alliance. His passing is a political loss for the nation, and we offer our full condolences to his family.' Yadav is expected to join other national leaders at Nemra village in Jharkhand on Tuesday, where Soren's last rites will be performed.

In over 80% of areas, collector rates have increased by only 10%: CM Saini

Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, asserting that despite 55 years in power post-Independence, the party failed to bring genuine change for the poor. Addressing a state-level programme in Panchkula, Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini contrasted the Congress's legacy with the transformative impact of welfare schemes implemented by the central and state governments under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. (HT Photo) Addressing a state-level programme in Panchkula, CM Saini contrasted the Congress's legacy with the transformative impact of welfare schemes implemented by the central and state governments under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. 'During the reign of the Congress, the poor became poorer,' Saini stated, emphasising that the current administration has delivered tangible benefits at the grassroots level. He specifically highlighted the discrepancy in housing initiatives. 'In the past, Congress promised plots to poor families but failed to provide proper documents or possession. Today, our government has not only given legal documents but also handed over the actual possession of 100-square-yard plots to beneficiaries,' he affirmed. Saini also challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's skepticism regarding 'Jan Dhan' accounts. 'I challenge him to look at the data; he should see the figures of 'Jan Dhan' accounts, in which the poor have deposited their hard-earned savings in the last 11 years,' the CM said. Refuting opposition claims that the government is collecting ₹5,000 crore in the name of collector rates, Saini clarified, 'The truth is, in over 80% of areas in Haryana, rates have increased by only 10%. There is a process for this, under which the collector rate is renewed every year considering the highest registry as the basis. Spreading such lies is irresponsible.' At the event, Saini handed over 'interim' ownership certificates under the Mukhyamantri Shehri Awas Yojana and plot allotment letters under the Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas Yojana 2.0 to thousands of beneficiaries. He announced that 1,144 beneficiaries in Sector-23, Jagadhri, received urban interim ownership certificates, while 3,884 rural beneficiaries received plot allotment letters across 58 villages. Sharing further details on housing, Saini said that under the first phase of the Mukhyamantri Shehri Awas Yojana, 15,256 families in 14 cities had already been allotted 30-square-yard plots, receiving a ₹2.5 lakh subsidy per household under PMAY–Urban 2.0 for house construction. In rural areas, the process to allot plots to 1.58 lakh applicants in 561 villages is underway under Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas Yojana–2.0. Additionally, rural beneficiaries will receive ₹1.38 lakh under PMAY–Gramin, ₹12,000 for toilets, and 90 days of unskilled labor wages under MGNREGA. Development & panchayats minister Krishan Lal Panwar lauded CM Saini's leadership, noting that historic decisions are being taken for the welfare of the poor, youth, and women. He also mentioned that families with annual incomes up to ₹1.80 lakh would be provided 2 kW solar panels.
