Korean Vlogger's Recorded Interaction with Hijab-Wearing Moroccan Minor Triggers Social Uproar

Morocco World21-07-2025
Marrakech – A Korean vlogger's recording of a hijab-wearing 16-year-old Moroccan girl in Casablanca has erupted into a firestorm of debate across social media platforms. The video, which has since been deleted, documented an interaction that raised serious concerns about both the teenager's behavior and the vlogger's decision to film a minor without consent.
In the footage, the conservatively dressed teenage girl approached the Korean content creator while he was touring Casablanca. She initiated a conversation by asking his name and nationality before making inappropriate comments, including complimenting his appearance while describing Moroccans as 'ugly.'
The interaction escalated when she pursued him persistently, requested his phone number, and even proposed marriage – all captured on camera.
The vlogger appeared visibly uncomfortable with the situation. He politely declined to share his personal contact information, suggesting instead that she follow his official Instagram account. Despite noticing the camera recording their interaction, the hijab-wearing girl continued her inappropriate advances.
Alarmingly, despite acknowledging her young age during their conversation, the content creator still chose to film and publish the footage with her face fully visible and unblurred, showing complete disregard for child protection standards.
The move appears driven by a thirst for likes and visibility, as Morocco-related content has recently become a shortcut to viral traffic, especially for struggling or low-engagement social media accounts.
The incident has prompted important questions about parental supervision and educational guidance. Many observers questioned how a 16-year-old could behave this way in public, pointing to potential gaps in parental oversight, school education, and moral orientation that fails to distinguish between freedom and disrespect.
Critics point to the corrosive impact of social media and imported pop culture – particularly K-pop – as key factors distorting Moroccan youths' sense of identity and behavior. These influences have fostered a worrying trend: attempts to gain validation from foreigners by mimicking foreign trends, often at the expense of self-respect and cultural authenticity.
The incident lays bare a deepening identity crisis, where admiration for outsiders morphs into self-deprecation. This 'foreigner complex' reflects broader societal challenges, including eroding cultural confidence, fragile self-worth, and a lack of robust local narratives that affirm pride in Moroccan heritage.
Filming minors without consent is a serious offense
Legal experts note that the vlogger's actions have violated Moroccan law regarding privacy protection and the rights of minors. The Moroccan Penal Code includes strict amendments protecting individuals' privacy, especially children.
According to Article 447-1, anyone who intentionally captures, records, broadcasts, or distributes private statements or images without consent faces imprisonment from six months to three years and fines between MAD 2,000 ($200) and MAD 20,000 ($2,000).
Article 447-2 further specifies that distributing manipulated content of a person's statements or image without consent, or broadcasting false claims intended to harm someone's reputation, carries prison terms of one to three years and similar fines.
Most significantly, Article 447-3 escalates penalties when the victim is a minor, imposing sentences of one to five years and fines from MAD 5,000 ($500) to MAD 50,000 ($5,000).
These amendments, which took effect under Law 103.13 concerning violence against women, speak of Morocco's commitment to protecting privacy rights and the rule of law in the digital age, ensuring no one can act freely online without accountability.
Following the backlash, the vlogger removed the video and issued an apology to Moroccans. However, the incident has not gone unnoticed, renewing debate about social media's influence on youth behavior and the responsibilities of content creators when filming in public spaces.
Social media commentators have stressed that public areas are not extensions of private property where anyone can be recorded and shared online without consequences.
Many argue that, while troubling, the incident is an isolated case that shouldn't be taken as indicative of Moroccan society or the behavior of Moroccan girls, particularly those who present themselves as conservative.
They caution against drawing broad conclusions and generalizations from a single event, insisting that one individual's actions represent an exception – not the norm – and should not define an entire community. Tags: Moroccan minorVlogger

Morocco, Spain Strengthen Security Cooperation to Curb Irregular Migration to Ceuta

Rabat– In response to a sharp spike in irregular migration attempts toward Ceuta, Moroccan and Spanish authorities have significantly ramped up their joint security operations in recent days, according to El Mundo. The Spanish outlet reports that Morocco has deployed an unprecedented array of ground and maritime resources along its northern coastline, focusing on intercepting makeshift boats and preventing migrants—many of them unaccompanied minors—from reaching the Spanish enclave. This enhanced cooperation comes amid growing pressure on Ceuta's borders. Over the weekend, despite the tightened security measures, several migrants attempted to cross. Three youths reportedly reached Spanish territory briefly before being apprehended and swiftly returned to Morocco. Spanish Civil Guard sources cited by El Mundo highlighted the effectiveness of coordination with Morocco's Royal Gendarmerie, particularly at the maritime border near the Tarajal crossing point—Ceuta's primary entry zone. Since early Saturday, Moroccan authorities have deployed nine patrol boats to maintain 24/7 surveillance, a move credited with foiling all nighttime crossing attempts that day. In support of the joint effort, Spain's Interior Ministry dispatched a maritime vessel to strengthen the Civil Guard's presence in Ceuta. On Sunday morning, however, several youths exploited heavy fog to launch a new wave of sea crossings. While most were intercepted and turned back by Moroccan forces, approximately 50 minors and 30 adults reached Ceuta. They were immediately attended to by the Civil Guard before being handed back to Moroccan authorities after receiving first aid. This renewed migratory pressure reflects broader instability across the Western Mediterranean. As both nations work to avoid another border crisis, they remain committed to upholding bilateral agreements and enhancing real-time coordination to manage migration flows.

Moroccan journalist Mohamed El Bakkali released by Israel after Gaza mission arrest

On Sunday, July 27, Israeli authorities released Moroccan journalist Mohamed El Bakkali, who serves as a correspondent for Al Jazeera. Prior to his release, El Bakkali agreed to a condition prohibiting him from joining any future humanitarian missions to Gaza. This stipulation extends to the other activists aboard the «Handala». The Moroccan journalist is scheduled to board a direct flight to Paris this Monday morning. To recap, on Saturday evening, Israeli naval forces intercepted the «Handala» in international waters of the Mediterranean, detaining its passengers, including Mohamed El Bakkali, and transporting them to Israel. Just hours before his arrest, El Bakkali recorded a video message appealing to Moroccan authorities for intervention should he be detained by the Israeli military. In Morocco, a coalition of political groups, spanning both left-wing and Islamist factions, demanded Mohamed El Bakkali's release as early as last night.

Moroccan authorities intercept 4 tons of cannabis at Tanger Med port

In the early hours of Sunday, officers from the National Security and Customs at the Tanger Med port successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle 4.374 tons of cannabis resin hidden aboard an international freight truck. The coordinated efforts of the National Security and Customs services resulted in the confiscation of this large drug haul. The cannabis resin was cleverly concealed within a shipment of fruits carried by a trailer attached to a Moroccan-registered truck, en route to a European port, as reported by a security source from MAP. The truck driver, a 51-year-old Moroccan national, is now under judicial investigation as ordered by the competent prosecutor. The investigation aims to uncover the details surrounding this operation and to trace both the national and international networks involved in this criminal enterprise.
