Anne Hathaway Will Play a Pop Star Performing Songs by Charli XCX in Her New Movie 'Mother Mary'
Anne Hathaway plays a pop star named Mary who prematurely ends her tour after an emotional crisis and seeks out an old friend and fashion designer, Sam (Michaela Coel), who first helped create her public diva persona. Other plot details are being kept under wraps.
In addition to Hathaway and Coel, FKA Twigs, Hunter Schafer, and Kaia Gerber will also star.
In a recent Vogue cover story, Hathaway spoke about the filming process. 'What struck me right away, reading the script, is that you can't 'perform' Mother Mary,' she said. 'If I got the part, I would have to become material David could craft with.'
She continued, 'I had to submit to being a beginner. The humility of that—showing up every day knowing you're going to suck. And it has to be okay. You're not 'bad.' You're just a beginner. Getting to that mindset—I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.'

'Devil Wears Prada 2' photos tease Anne Hathaway's possible love interest
Andy Sachs has officially left the "lumpy blue sweater" behind. Photos from the set of "The Devil Wears Prada 2" may offer some insight into the big-city life of Anne Hathaway's character two decades after the beloved original book adaptation came out on June 30, 2006. In photos captured Aug. 5 on the streets of Brooklyn, Hathaway, 42, is seen getting cozy with a new costar, "Colin from Accounts" actor/creator Patrick Brammall. Hathaway, whose character Andy is presumably out from under the thumb of "Runway" magazine overlord Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), dons a glittery blue, shin-length Rabanne dress from the designer's 2026 cruise collection. Perhaps an ode to the cerulean sweater that prompted Priestly's long-winded rant in the original film? That remains to be seen. It's unclear what character Brammall, 49, plays in the sequel. The Australian actor is married to "Colin from Accounts" costar and co-creator Harriet Dyer. In the first "Devil Wears Prada," Andy's love life is largely a casualty as her job as Priestly's second assistant takes precedence. She lives with her boyfriend, Nate (Adrian Grenier), but the two ultimately are unable to find middle ground as Andy develops an edge while working in the cutthroat fashion world. She also dabbles in a romance with journalist Christian Thompson (Simon Baker), which doesn't pan out. Details of the highly anticipated sequel are scant while it's in production, but fans have for weeks dissected the characters' fashion, as captured in paparazzi photos. "The Devil Wears Prada," based on the book of the same name, grossed more than $325 million at the worldwide box office and earned Streep an Academy Award nomination for best actress. Undoubtedly bringing comic relief, "Sex Lives of College Girls" actress Pauline Chalamet will also appear, according to the outlets. The film has also brought in Broadway talent, with "Maybe Happy Ending" star Helen J. Shen and "Oh, Mary!" actor Conrad Ricamora confirmed, per Variety. The halls of Runway won't be missing familiar faces, though. Tracie Thoms, who played Lily, Hathaway's best friend, will reprise her character, as will Tibor Feldman, who portrayed media executive Irv Ravitz. David Frankel, director of the original "Devil Wears Prada," is returning for the sequel, and the first movie's screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, is writing the script. "The Devil Wears Prada 2" will give Hathaway the opportunity to revisit one of her most iconic early roles, 20 years later. The Mary Bronstein-directed dramedy released a trailer on Wednesday (Aug. 6), which finds Byrne playing a mother, who works as a psychotherapist, in the midst of crashing out. Conan O'Brien, Christian Slater and Danielle Macdonald are among those filling out the cast. 'With her life literally crashing down around her, Linda attempts to navigate her child's mysterious illness, her absent husband, a missing person and an increasingly hostile relationship with her therapist,' reads a logline for the film.
