Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres faces disciplinary action for training no-show

Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres faces disciplinary action for training no-show

The Portuguese club warned Gyokeres' no-show will make the striker's possible departure to Arsenal 'more complicated'.
Gyokeres, who scored 39 league goals to fire Sporting to the Portuguese title last season, is understood to be at the top of Arsenal's wishlist.
However, the two clubs are yet to agree a transfer fee and the 27-year-old has appeared to play his hand by refusing to return for pre-season training.
However, Sporting president Frederico Varandas told Portuguese news agency LUSA, 'We're calm. Everything can be solved with the closure of the market, a hefty fine and an apology to the group.
'If they don't want to pay Viktor's fair market value, we'll be very comfortable with that for the next three years.
'If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to make it easier for him to leave, not only are they completely wrong, but they are also making it more complicated for the player to leave.
'No one is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are.'
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in a new striker before the club's pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong, with Arsenal due to play their first match, against AC Milan, on July 23.
Denmark midfielder Christian Norgaard has been brought in from Brentford, along with Spain international Martin Zubimendi and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who joined from Chelsea.
Arsenal are also closing in on a £52million deal for Chelsea's England forward Noni Madueke.

Gameweeks & Transfers explained: New rollover process and other important information for Dream Team bosses

DREAM TEAM managers set to embark on the 2025/26 season should familiarise themselves with the processes regarding Gameweeks and transfers. Here's everything you need to know about these key elements of the game. 3 GAMEWEEKS The season is divided up into Gameweeks, with each one acting as a scoring period. You will need to make sure your team is set up for the upcoming Gameweek prior to the deadline, which typically falls 90 minutes before the first fixture (usually Friday night or Saturday lunchtime). However, the first deadline of the season is 8pm on August 15th to coincide with kick-off between Liverpool and Bournemouth, the season's curtain-raiser. Prior to each deadline, you will need to confirm any transfers you wish to make, select your captain (and vice captain), and activate any Boosters you wish to play. Please be aware that any changes made after the deadline won't go through until the following Gameweek (Substitute exceptions aside). Frequently, teams will play twice within the same Gameweek. For example, there will be several Gameweeks that accommodate the usual Premier League games plus a full round of European fixtures. Expect plenty of double Gameweeks for the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace AND Nottingham Forest. More fixtures equals more point-scoring opportunities and so it's often wise to tailor your XI with a view to targeting these juicy double headers. The upcoming Gameweek deadline is displayed in app and on site and the fixtures for each Gameweek can be viewed in the Match Centre. 3 TRANSFERS Once the season is underway, you will need to make transfers to react to the unfolding drama using your available budget. Whether you're ditching injured/suspended players or replacing under-performing flops with in-form gems, transfers will keep your team fresh. Prior to the start of the season, you can make as many transfers as you like so feel free to experiment with various formations, combinations etc. Once the action begins, you will have two transfers available per Gameweek. If you decide not to make a transfer (a perfectly good decision in certain scenarios) then both transfers will roll over to the following Gameweek. Similarly, if you decide to make just one transfer then your unused one will carry over, giving you three the following Gameweek. However, there is a limit to the number of transfers you can roll over - the maximum available at any one time is six. 3 Deciding when to make changes and when to bank transfers is a crucial strategic element. Sometimes it pays to target short-term gains but other times you will need to plan ahead for long-term success. Transfers can be reversed any time before the deadline without cost. We'll be on hand every week with transfer suggestions as well as other tips that should help guide your approach.

Chelsea transfer news: Alejandro Garnacho, Jorrel Hato, Morgan Rogers, Rodrygo and more

Though a successful Club World Cup campaign sees Chelsea return from the USA as world champions, the Blues are not expected to slow down their transfer activity ahead of the new season starting in August. The club began the summer transfer windows with their usual vigour and have already completed the signings of Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap, while adding Joao Pedro in time for the Brazilian to score in the Club World Cup final against PSG. Enzo Maresca 's side are preparing for a jaunt into the Champions League next season after finishing fourth in the English top-flight and winning the Conference League in a busy term. Some fans will feel the Blues still have work to do in the summer, with a bulking of the squad needed in some areas to provide the quality demanded by Europe's elite club competition. There is no shortage of funds at Stamford Bridge, with big-money moves a constant fixture of recent transfer windows, and this summer is set to be no different. Here's everything you need to know about Chelsea's summer transfer plans. Arrivals & areas to improve The first port of call for Chelsea this summer was a new winger, as the club decided not to make the deal for Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho permanent. The signing of Jamie Gittens means they have a direct replacement for Sancho, though the imminent departure of Noni Madueke means the club may decide to dip back into the market for another wing profile. Cole Palmer may have shown his attacking quality in the Club World Cup final, scoring two of Chelsea's goals, though he lacked consistency over recent months – highlighted by the fact that he scored just once in the last 20 games of the 2024/25 term – and he clearly needs some help carrying the goalscoring and creative burden. The purchases of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro should go some way to doing just that, with Pedro especially already showing his worth during the Club World Cup. Elsewhere, a bolstering of their goalkeeping ranks could be in order, with a new central defender potentially required if transfers out of the club fall into place. Done deals Ins: Joao Pedro (Brighton, £60m), Jamie Gittens (Borussia Dortmund, £48.5m), Liam Delap (Ipswich Town, £30m), Estevao (Palmeiras, £29m), Dario Essugo (Sporting Lisbon, £18.5m), Kendry Paez (Independiente, £17.5m), Mamadou Sarr (Strasbourg, £11.9m) Outs: Kepa Arrizabalaga (Arsenal, £5m), Jadon Sancho (Manchester United, end of loan), Bashir Humphreys (Burnley, £14.7m), Marcus Bettinelli (Manchester City, nominal fee), Mathis Amougou (Strasbourg, undisclosed), Lucas Bergstrom, (out of contract) Potential targets Alejandro Garnacho, Manchester United Chelsea were interested in bringing Man Utd winger Garnacho to Stamford Bridge in January, though a move failed to materialise and the Argentinian winger was also linked to Napoli. However, with the Italian champions cooling their interest, Garnacho having stated his desire to stay in the Premier League and Chelsea close to selling Noni Madueke, the Blues could go back in for the 21-year-old. Jorrel Hato, Ajax Fresh reports are linking the Blues with a move for Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, who can play at left-back and centre-back. The Dutch giants are said to want £40m for the 19-year-old, with Chelsea supposedly having held informal talks to explore a move. Morgan Rogers, Aston Villa The Blues are known admirers of Morgan Rogers, according to The Athletic. It is not known if they deem his position as a necessary addition to the squad at this moment, but that profile of player could certainly add something different in attack while easing the burden on Palmer and co. Reports continue to link them with the 22-year-old, though there is nothing concrete in terms of an offer or approach yet. Mike Maignan, AC Milan Chelsea originally seemed to have one goalkeeping option in mind, with the club targeting Maignan before ehe Club World Cup, though it is unknown if they may come back in for the 29-year-old French shot-stopper. He kept 12 clean sheets in Serie A last season, but reports are suggesting that the Blues could be disappointed with a new contract potentially convincing him to stay in Italy. Rodrygo, Real Madrid With the departure of Madueke close to being confirmed, expect links to wingers to become increasingly visible in the next few days and weeks. One such link is for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, who is said to be surplus to requirements at Los Blancos. Rumours persist linking the Brazilian to Liverpool, Arsenal and the Blues, as well as Man City. Hugo Ekitike, Eintracht Frankfurt The sought-after Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Hugo Ekitike could solve Chelsea's attacking dilemmas, though it is currently Newcastle and Liverpool who are leading the race to sign a player who scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists across an impressive season in Germany, having both made bids for the striker.

EXCLUSIVE Arsenal fans' reaction to Noni Madueke signing is 'really horrible', Cheekysport's Joel Beya tells the Mail's Whistleblowers podcast

The reaction of certain sections of Arsenal 's fanbase to the signing of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has been 'really horrible', football content creator Joel Beya has told the Mail's Whistleblowers podcast. Beya, an Arsenal fan who co-hosts the VIBE with Five podcast with Rio Ferdinand, said criticism of the 23-year-old England international has gone too far, particularly in a country that supposedly 'cares about players' mental health'. Madueke is set to complete a medical with the Gunners ahead of a £52million move across London. Fans opposed to the move started an online petition and used the hashtag #NoToMadueke on X to express their dissatisfaction with the transfer. 'Would Madueke be my first choice? Probably not', Beya told co-host Mark Clattenburg. 'I understand why fans aren't too happy, we're paying £50million for him. But, I do not stand with those people making petitions – and being really horrible. 'We're a country that says we care about mental health, that kind of thing could really destroy somebody. 'It's not the player's fault he has been bought for that much, plus once he puts that shirt on, as fans, we have to support him.' Madueke scored seven and assisted three in 32 Premier League appearances last season. Some Arsenal fans have questioned the wisdom of spending a healthy portion of their transfer budget on a player with similar output to their current left winger Gabriel Martinelli, who managed eight goals and four assists. The winger joins a long line of players switching blue for red in recent years, with Arsenal signing Willian, Jorginho, Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling from Chelsea in the last five seasons. Beya cautioned that Arsenal, as the 'dominant team in the league', should avoid strengthening a potential title rival like Chelsea by paying an inflated transfer fee. He said: 'You do not want to be funding your rivals. Chelsea's squad is serious – as much as we banter around. 'That team has great potential, especially with Cole Palmer – who I will openly admit is my favourite player in the league. 'They're a fanatic selling club and Arsenal need to start treating them more as rivals.' Whislteblowers co-host and broadcaster Gordon Smart asked Beya which realistic signings would make him feel confident as an Arsenal fan going into next season. 'It has to be Rodrygo', Beya responded. 'We've already got Viktor Gyokeres – I think Rodrygo saves Arteta his job.' With Liverpool making moves to sign Swedish striker Alexander Isak, Beya was also asked why Arsenal aren't pursuing the prolific forward. He argued that Liverpool's more organised approach to transfers allows the Merseyside club to execute bigger deals. He said: 'If you see the way Liverpool go about business in comparison to Arsenal, are you surprised Isak would rather go to them? 'If I am a player looking at that project from the outside, Liverpool looks very organised. They've got their targets. They're just missing the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle, why wouldn't you go to them? 'It feels like we've been rebuilding for far too long.'
