SJOBA half-marathon to be held on July 26

The St Johns Old Boys Association (SJOBA) will organise the SJOBA Half-Marathon this year on July 26 to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas apart from paying tribute for marathon legend Fauja Singh, who died at the age of 114 years in a road accident last week. The half-marathon (21km) will also see runners competing in 10 km, 5 km and 3 km categories.
'The marathon is being held on 26th July to commemorate Kargil Day under the powerful motto — Run for the Armed Forces, Run for Peace, Run for the Planet, and in memory of Fauja Singh, a legend in endurance running and an inspiration to all. Each participant will receive a finishing medal, goodie bag, and a healthy breakfast. Trophies will be awarded to winners in each category, with recognition for both male and female participants,' said Harpal Singh Malvai, president, SJOBA, while addressing the media at St John's High School, Sector 26.
The event is expected to see the participation of more than 500 runners across various categories. The event will be flagged off at 5.00 am on July 26 from the school campus. The half-marathon will also see participation of nine wheel-chair runners apart from others specially abled runners too competing in various categories. 'More than 500 runners will be competing in the SJOBA half-marathon. The half marathon will provide runners the choice of running in 21 km, 10km, five km and three km categories. Nine wheel-chair runners will also compete in the marathon,' said Danish Singh Mangat, secretary, SJOBA.

Over 4,000 participate in Run for Nation marathon held in Coimbatore

The fifth edition of the 'Run for Nation' Marathon, organised by VGM Hospital in association with Kovai Athletic Club, was held in Coimbatore on Sunday (July 27, 2025), with participation from over 4,000 runners across five south Indian States. Participants aged between eight and 85, including around 150 differently-abled individuals, competed in 12 categories. The event was flagged off by VGM Hospital Chairman V.G. Mohan Prasad, along with doctors and dignitaries. This year's marathon focused on the theme 'Save the Knee', highlighting the growing prevalence of knee-related health issues. A team of 11 specialists conducted awareness drives across more than 100 institutions over the last three months. A prize money of ₹1.5 lakh was also given.

Fit Feet Dharwad, a forum of like-minded marathon runners, has taken the initiative to pay tribute to Fauja Singh in a memorable way. They aim to encourage today's generation to take part in marathons and participate in sports activities to lead a healthy life by drawing inspiration from the life story of Fauja Singh. He proved to the world that nothing is impossible by breaking several records in marathon runs, starting his career in marathons as an octogenarian. Ashok Patil, founder-president of Fit Feet Dharwad, told TOI that Fauja Singh set a world record by starting his marathon career at the age of 89. "He won many national and international level marathon competitions and events. He beat several records and achieved feats that were not possible even for young people. He remained an inspiration for today's generation. Fit Feet Dharwad has taken up this initiative to educate today's generation about the importance of marathons to keep oneself healthy and maintain good fitness, both physically and mentally. "We will also organise weekend runs every Sunday in Dharwad and Hubbali, and all participants will run for hours in KUD, Agricultural College, IIIT, and other places. Interested people are free to join us," Ashok Patil said.
