Reader poll: See what people think are the biggest Myrtle Beach area issues
Almost half, or 48%, of the 63 people who responded to the poll said crime is the biggest issue in the Myrtle Beach area because of over development and lack of action from its cities and counties.
The reader poll was published on July 2 and is still available for responses.
One respondent who has lived in the area for 20 years said that tourists have been out of control and committing crimes. He said that Myrtle Beach needs a broader curfew.
Another local who has lived in Myrtle Beach for 18 years said crime is out of control compared to the country, adding 'the excuse that it's a tourist area is bogus.'
Another respondent who moved to the area for golf said all he reads about is crime in the two weeks he has lived there.
Many respondents, 22% of them, also indicated they were concerned with over development of the area, some indicating that over development is entwined with the crime they see. Almost all readers concerned most with over development in the area said infrastructure can't keep up.
Readers said over development puts a burden on the medical care system and police in Horry County, 14% of respondents indicated traffic is the biggest issue in the Myrtle Beach area.
Four percent also talked politics, some stating that public officials are self-interested and neglect real issues.
Six percent indicated reputation was their biggest concerns, and many readers discussed other issues harming Myrtle Beach's reputation and tourism, the area's biggest industry.
Other concerns included housing, finding a good job and the environment each poling at 2% as the biggest issue facing the area according to readers.

Man punched in face during 'altercation with youths'
A man was punched in the face during an "altercation" with a group of youths in the city centre. The assault on London Road is believed to have happened at around 7.45pm on Sunday, August 3. It was reported to Merseyside Police that a man in his 40s had been punched during an altercation with a group of youths. The man was treated at the scene by paramedics for a facial injury. The force is appealing for anyone who saw the incident to get in touch. No arrests have been reported. A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for information following an assault on London Street at around 7.45pm yesterday (Sunday, August 3). "It was reported that a man aged in his 40s had been punched following an altercation with a group of youths. The man was treated at the scene by paramedics for a facial injury. "We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch. If you have any information, you can call 101 or DM @MerPolCC on social media, quoting reference number 25000639652." Around $10,000 worth of radio equipment stolen from Oakdale assistant fire chief's truck
Around $10,000 of of radio equipment was stolen from the Oakdale Hose Company's assistant fire chief over the weekend. The Oakdale Hose Company said on Facebook that the assistant chief had two radios taken from his truck just before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. The fire department said that a Motorola APX 8000 radio and a Motorola APX 6000 radio were stolen and look like walkie talkies. "The APX 8000 is very sought after in public safety," the fire department said. The person who stole the radios was chased on foot by an Oakdale police officer but they got away, the fire department said. People who live in the area are now being asked to check their home cameras for video footage that might help police identify the suspect. The fire department says the fire chief is going to be asking members for their permission to offer a reward for the return of the equipment or information that would lead to an arrest of the person who stole the equipment.
