2 NFC West players named potential "best players at their position"
The Seattle Seahawks are constantly jockeying for position in the NFC West. In 2024, the division was captured by the Los Angeles Rams, who possessed the tiebreaker over the Seahawks after both teams matched records of 10-7. Moving forward, which NFC West competitor possesses the more ascending talents will have the upper hand in the division-title race.
Pro Football Focus recently compiled a list of which players have a chance to become the best at their respective position in 2025. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, none of their in-house talents qualified. Making matters worse, San Francisco 49ers guard Dominick Puni, and Rams EDGE Jared Verse both made the list.
"Puni was a revelation for the 49ers last season, finishing with the sixth-best overall grade among qualified guards at 80.5," Dalton Wasserman wrote. "A major factor in that success was his effectiveness in Kyle Shanahan's outside zone scheme — his 82.1 outside zone run-blocking grade ranked fifth among all guards. With another year of development in Shanahan's system, both as a run blocker and pass protector, Puni could soon challenge for the top spot at the position."
The Seahawks were out-gained by the 49ers 228-52 on the ground in a Week 6 defeat. Puni played a large role in that dominant showing. Furthermore, 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy was not sacked in that contest. Puni helped stonewall Mike Macdonald's defense.
"Reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse is poised to build on his outstanding 2024 season," Wasserman continued. "His 89 pressures, including the postseason, led the NFL. He was also one of just two qualified edge defenders — along with T.J. Watt — to earn at least an 80.0 grade in both run defense and pass rushing. The only blemish on his resume was a league-high 21 missed tackles."
Verse probably won't be the best EDGE in the league this season, given the elite talent at the position. Myles Garrett, Watt, Aidan Hutchinson, and Micah Parsons would like a word. Still, Verse's dominant rookie campaign spells bad news for the Seahawks moving forward.
The Seahawks need to start stacking similar young talents throughout their roster, or they risk falling behind.

49ers GM explains why team decided to 'throttle back' on spending big in 2025 offseason
49ers GM explains why team decided to 'throttle back' on spending big in 2025 offseason It took awhile for the San Francisco 49ers to get active in this year's offseason. They made a handful of low-level free agent additions while watching several starters and key reserves leave to join other clubs. After the draft, the 49ers got busy with big-money extensions for tight end George Kittle, quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner. Still, it was a strange offseason considering how willing the 49ers have been to spend money to fill holes in free agency. This year they chose to fill their more significant roster weaknesses via the draft. General manager John Lynch in an appearance on the 49ers Talk podcast explained the club's decision to 'throttle back' on their aggressiveness in free agency. "Look, we've been aggressive since Kyle (Shanahan) and I arrived here," Lynch said. "And that's what Jed and the family want to do. They want to be aggressive and we have been, but you can't just keep doing that. At some point you have to throttle back. Then we felt for the overall health of our cap and cash situation -- plus our roster in general -- you don't want to just become an aging roster. "The year before, we felt like we had such a good team. Let's keep it together, but you've got to stay young. And I think our draft last year was really good, and we had a chance with 11 picks to really add to that, and I was really excited. I thought we did a good job executing that plan." It's hard to argue that the 49ers executed their plan well. They wanted some of their less productive, expensive, aging players off the roster so they could either save money or accelerate their cap hits to this year when Purdy is still not making a ton of money against the cap. With 11 picks to supplement an eight-player class from a season ago, San Francisco has successfully made their roster younger and less expensive in the immediate future. On the other hand, whether this strategy ultimately works remains to be seen. The 49ers aren't tanking, but they're relying a lot on rookies for a club that's trying to get back to Super Bowl contention. On-field production will ultimately tell us whether the 49ers successfully executed their long-term strategy, but for now the offseason appears to have played out exactly as they expected. 49ers' Christian McCaffrey Delivers Strong Update on His Comeback Path
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up for what they hope will be a major bounce-back season in 2025. After missing the playoffs last season following a Super Bowl appearance the year before, there are reasons for optimism. Last season, the 49ers dealt with major injury issues. One of the biggest was only having star running back Christian McCaffrey for four games. At the beginning of the year, McCaffrey was dealing with Achilles issues. He then suffered a knee injury after making his return to the field. Photo byIt was a depressing season for the 29-year-old running back. He's hoping to come back strong in 2025 and get his career back on track. Read more: Vikings' JJ McCarthy Just Got a Big Update From NFL Insider McCaffrey has now spoken out with a bold message about his recovery and what has been a big help for him on his path back to the gridiron. "Being fully transparent, obviously, last year didn't go the way I wanted," McCaffrey said. "It didn't go the way anyone wanted. But having this time off has allowed me to start from scratch and have the time where I can build a base again, come into OTAs, play football and now get back into it mentally, emotionally, physically in all ways. It was much needed and I'm happy we had it." Clearly, the superstar running back has approached his offseason the right way. He seems rejuvenated and ready to get back to dominating opposing defenses. Back in the 2023 NFL season, McCaffrey put together a massive season. He carried the football 272 times for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. In addition, he caught 67 passes for 564 yards and seven more touchdowns. Not only will McCaffrey getting back to full health be good for San Francisco, it will also help franchise quarterback Brock Purdy. He also had a down year in 2024 with opposing defenses being able to key in on the passing game. He is clearly excited to get the season underway. Hopefully, he will be able to stay healthy throughout the entirety of the 2025 season. If he can, San Francisco could be a team to watch once again in the NFC. Only time will tell, but the 49ers seem to be trending in the right direction with McCaffrey's new status update. Former 49ers QB says San Francisco played offseason 'perfectly'
The San Francisco 49ers were arguably the biggest underachievers in the NFL in 2024, going from a 12-5 team that narrowly lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl to 6-11 and finishing in last place in the NFC West. San Francisco's lack of success last year, brought them into the offseason with a ton of decisions to make, including which of their pending free agents to sign or let walk, who to target from other teams in free agency, who to extend that was still under contract, who to trade and who to draft. Over the last few months, the team has made some massive changes, firing defensive coordinator Nick Sorenson, hiring Robert Saleh to replace him, letting Dre Green law, Aaron Banks, Talanoa Hufanga and Charvarius Ward leave in free agency and trading Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. While there have been mixed reviews of San Francisco's offseason, to this point, former 49ers quarterback Steve Young is thrilled with what his team has done. 'I'm very happy with how they handled the offseason,' Young told Rich Eisen on the 'Rich Eisen Show.' 'They had a clear plan. It was retooling. It wasn't a complete restructure, but it was a retooling. Every move was tactical and smart and fast. And signing everybody and getting everybody on board. I just thought they handled the offseason perfectly. 'And now what has to happen is your veterans need to stay healthy. Trent Williams is number one. If Trent Williams goes down, that offensive line is no longer a top-five offensive line in the league. But with Trent, you can survive it. Now, if all of your veterans stay healthy, you've got all your rookies that need to pop. The [Los Angeles] Rams got it with Puka Nacua, and now all of a sudden, they're back in the mix. And that needs to happen [for the 49ers].' Injuries were a huge part of San Francisco's struggles in 2024, with Williams, Greenlaw, Hufanga, Javon Hargrave, Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk missing significant time. As Young points out, if most of the 49ers' stars can be on the field for the majority of the season, they should see better results, and seeing some young players pop, like first-round pick Mykel Williams, in 2025 could get them back to the postseason and erase the memory of an abysmal year.
