Heartbeat star becomes frontrunner to lead Death in Paradise-style spin-off

Daily Mirrora day ago
Death in Paradise is getting a spin-off in the form of Death in Benidorm, which will see a UK detective move overseas in a bid to escape the chaos of his career
Heartbeat legend Jason Durr is amongst the frontrunners to portray the main detective in a Death in Paradise-style spin-off entitled Death in Benidorm.

The plot for Death in Benidorm revolves around Detective Dennis Crown, who "has swapped the chaos of the UK for a quieter life running a bar in Benidorm".

The show's synopsis reveals: "But when tourists start turning up dead, he's reluctantly drawn back into detective work-egged on by his barmaid Rosa, a crime drama superfan.

"With Dennis's real-world experience and Rosa's encyclopaedic TV knowledge, each episode sees the duo tackling a new murder in paradise, whilst trying to remain on the right side of the local Spanish cops."
And whilst no official announcement has been made regarding who will portray the main detective, gambling firms have started speculating about possible casting decisions, reports Wales Online.
Jason features amongst the names being considered, alongside Neil Morrissey, Rob Brydon, and Mark Benton.
However, the former Heartbeat actor, who portrayed PC Mike Bradley, has been offered odds of 8/1 to secure the leading role.

"As a household name with a strong track record in other shows, Morrissey brings the right mix of humour, emotional depth and recognisability, if the producers are aiming to turn heads and draw in ratings."
He continued: "Hot on his heels is Mark Benton, a Channel 5 favourite which could see him easily fit into the role of Dennis Crown. Benton's everyman appeal and proven charm in Shakespeare and Hathaway would slot perfectly into the tone of a light-but-meaningful coastal crime drama.

"For now, though, the latest odds suggest it's Morrissey who looks most likely to be sipping sangria while solving sun-drenched secrets!"
Additional contenders include James Nesbitt, Lee Ingleby, Philip Glenister and Sanjeev Bhaskar.
The network is yet to announce a transmission date or unveil casting information.
Death in Benidorm will air on Channel 5.

BBC star gags on live TV after revealing surprising food ‘phobia'

A BBC star left a live TV panel stunned after gagging when discussing his bizarre food 'phobia'. Death in Paradise star Ralf Little left BBC's Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebbutt gobsmacked after his shock admission. The 45-year-old, who has also starred in hit shows like The Royle Family and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, took a turn for the worse after the conversation went on to tomatoes. Asked to nominate his 'food hell', Ralf said: 'Tomatoes.. That's it. Don't bring them anywhere near me. 'I am very, very strange with it. I can eat a pizza very happily with it if there's a tomato sauce, but if there's a slice of a tomato pizza…' Before he could even finish his sentence, he began to gag, adding: 'I can't, I can't. Get it away from me. 'There's something about a lump of tomato that's just…' As if the first time wasn't bad enough, Ralf can then be heard gagging again before joking: 'I'll talk to my therapist about it.' The 45-year-old was asked to nominate his food 'phobia' in a game of Food Heaven or Food Hell. Viewers are asked to vote between the two options the guests give, and then at the end of the episode the celebrity has to eat what the fans decide. Although Saturday Kitchen host Tebbutt appeared to have his hands full hosting today's show, the presenter chef could be even busier if he decides to take over from the recently axed Gregg Wallace and John Torode on MasterChef. The BBC has been plagued by controversy over the past couple of years following 83 misconduct allegations that were lodged against Wallace, before Torode faced an allegation of racism. Following the recent exit of both presenters after an inquiry was published about their misconduct, both Tebbutt and fellow chef Andi Oliver have been highlighted as potential candidates for the vacant positions. Tebbutt is a British chef and food presenter best known for presenting Channel 4's Food Unwrapped and Drop Down Menu, and the Good Food channel's Market Kitchen. He ran a restaurant called The Foxhunter for many years with his wife, but gave it up to focus on his TV career. Previously, he also presented Saturday Kitchen while regular host James Martin was away but then became the main presenter. View More » Saturday Kitchen is available to watch on BBC. Got a story? Joanna Page admits one experience on Welsh beach made her reconsider living in England

Actress Joanna Page has opened up about a personal predicament following the conclusion of Gavin & Stacey and her contemplation of relocating her family back to Wales. The 48-year-old star confessed she had considered the move after taking up surfing and feeling remarkably energised by the activity, sparking thoughts about whether she should uproot her family from England. Joanna, alongside husband James Thornton, whom she wed in 2003, shares four children: Eva, Kit, Noah, and Boe. Reflecting on the experience with womanandhome, Joanna remembered: "Over the summer, I did my first-ever surfing lesson in Wales. I came home so invigorated, I wanted to move to Saundersfoot, thinking, 'It's about time I went back to Wales. I want to surf and live on the beach.' "Then trying to put that into action with four children who've never lived in Wales and are very settled into their school is difficult! Now I just want to continue surfing whenever I can. It's good for the mind as well as fitness." Beyond discussing relocating her family westward, Joanna also revealed she has occasionally pondered adopting another child, reports Wales Online. Despite having her "tubes tied," she has explored the possibility with James as she remains deeply maternal. Joanna elaborated: "I've been thinking about fostering or adopting. It's something I've chatted about with James because I'm still very maternal, and it's something that I would think about in the future." Joanna Page has previously hinted at a move from England to Wales. Earlier this year, during her BBC One show Wynne and Joanna: All at Sea, she confessed that she had discussed the idea with James. During the programme, she revealed: "It's made me think, why am I not living by the sea? I've already spoken to James and I've said to him, 'that's it, I'm done.' "I had to move to England for drama school and I've lived there ever since. It's time. It's time to go home! I am from the sea, I'm from the sea, and I need to be back here." "I am so excited to go back home and see everybody, and just to bring both the old me and the new me back home, and just go, 'come on! Let's live by the sea, let's do yoga on the beach' – that's what I want to do now." In addition to discussing her feelings about potentially adopting, Joanna also shared how liberated she felt being away from her children while filming the final Gavin & Stacey episode. She said: "Every night, I was in bed by 10.30pm because I was so excited to have a hotel room and bed to myself... I'd climb into bed, lie on my back and spread out. It was heaven! "I was away from the children and wasn't being Mum, having responsibility for everyone and just doing all the cooking. "Mentally, I created some space to relax and have a bit of time for myself to breathe and sleep. That made me feel really quite good, coming home and feeling that I'm not just Mum, I'm Jo as well."
