What Rangers bound Max Aarons loves about Russell Martin as pair set for Ibrox reunion

Daily Recorda day ago

Aarons got a brief taste of what it was like to work with Martin during his early days at Norwich City
Max Aarons once remarked that he always knew Russell Martin would enter the world of management ahead of the duo's imminent reunion at Rangers.
Bournemouth right-back Aarons is close to sealing a loan move to Ibrox, where he could become new Gers boss Martin 's first signing of the summer.

He is set to be joined by out of contract Peterborough star Kwame Poku while Record Sport has learned that deals for Leicester centre half Conor Coady and Maccabi Tel Aviv striker Dor Turgeman are also in the offing.

The former England U21 international didn't make his debut at former club Norwich until August 2018, three months after ex defender Martin's eight-year spell with the Canaries came to an end following a short loan stint with Rangers.
But the 25-year-old - who spent the second half of last season on loan at Valencia in Spain - has revealed that the veteran centre back would often join in training sessions with Norwich's youth team.
And in Aarons view, the "aura" that the 39-year-old possessed made him even more determined to reach the top.
Speaking on the Talk Norwich City Podcast back in April, the defender - who has made 27 appearances for Bournemouth since his £7million switch from Carrow Road in 2023 - said: "With Russ, he had an aura when he came and trained with us.
"For us it was like 'if this guy is training with us you have to be training well every single day'.

"I could feel that when he was training with us. I always knew he would go on to be a manager.
"The players who have played with him always knew that as well.
"When he was training with us, we had to be on it and giving at least 110 per cent because if not, Russ would tell you.

"I loved that. He pushed us in every single training session, and it almost gave me a feeling that I was ready to go and make the jump (to the first team)."

Liverpool near Milos Kerkez transfer as Florian Wirtz contract details emerge

Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Armin Pecsi this summer and are expected to wrap up deals for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez soon Liverpool have enjoyed a busy start to the summer, with the Premier League champions already confirming a number of incomings and outgoings. Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili have officially made the move to Anfield, while young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi has also signed. Trent Alexander-Arnold has left for Real Madrid and Caoimhin Kelleher has been sold to Brentford and several more deals could be confirmed in the coming weeks. The Reds are keen to build on Arne Slot's impressive debut campaign and have plenty of money to spend. ‌ Florian Wirtz is on the verge of joining from Bayer Leverkusen and Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is also expected to sign, while the likes of Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa and Andy Robertson could all depart. ‌ Here, Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest news and rumours from in and around Anfield... READ MORE: Kerkez a 'done deal' Sebastijan Kerkez, who is the father and agent of Bournemouth defender Milos, has revealed that his son's move to Liverpool is "basically a done deal". Kerkez has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield and Bournemouth have already signed his replacement, having confirmed the capture of Adrien Truffert from Rennes on Monday. "It's only Liverpool for us and we're not going anywhere else and we won't talk to other clubs," Sebastijan said on Super Indirektno. "Everything is done between us (personal terms) we just need to sort out some details but it's basically a done deal." Wirtz contract details Florian Wirtz is set to have his medical this week ahead of a bumper move to Liverpool that could be worth up to £116m if certain add-ons are met. ‌ Wirtz has agreed a five-year deal which runs until the summer of 2030 that will make him one of the club's highest paid players. Sky Sports have reported that Wirtz will earn a base salary of £195,000 per week. However, that could rise to £245,000 if certain bonuses are triggered, meaning he is set to earn almost 12 times what he was being paid at Bayer Leverkusen. ‌ Liverpool consider sales According to the Athletic, Liverpool are open to selling both Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa this summer. Nunez struggled for form last season, managing just seven goals in 47 appearances across all competitions, and has been linked with the likes of Napoli, AC Milan and clubs in the Saudi Pro League. Chiesa, meanwhile, made only four starts in all competitions last season after making a cut-price move from Juventus over the summer and he has been heavily linked with a return to Serie A.

Kick yobs out of Scottish football after violence and disorder mars beautiful game

Kick yobs out of beautiful game Scottish football enjoys a reputation for having some of the most passionate but good natured fans around. Every major championship – when we qualify – sees our supporters winning hearts and minds in our host countries. When it comes to club football, we have some of the highest attendances per head of population in Europe. Our love affair with the beautiful game is there for all to see. But during the season just finished we have witnessed a new and darker edge creeping in to Scottish football. Black-clad 'ultra' groups left shoppers terrified as they rampaged through the streets of Glasgow before the Old Firm League Cup final in December. Pyro-waving mobs also tarnish matchdays with their dangerous displays around and inside football grounds. Then there is the growing menace of items being thrown at players on the pitch – with one Aberdeen player being hospitalised after he was hit by a seat thrown by one of his own fans. This violence and disorder could end up as a defining characteristic of Scottish football unless tough action is taken. So it is encouraging to hear Justice Secretary Angela Constance vow to tackle this problem. She staged a summit with clubs, police and fans yesterday to try to find a way forward. And in an interview in today's Daily Record she tells how her own experiences watching football have inspired her to take action. We wish Constance well in her campaign to clean up Scottish football. Real fans will also be singing her praises if she succeeds. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. Learn lessons In 2015, Nicola Sturgeon declared that cutting the education attainment gap would be her 'priority' as first minister. She said she 'wants to be judged on this' and that 'it really matters'. She even made John Swinney – her then deputy and one of her closest allies – education secretary to make sure progress was made. So it is surprising that after 18 years of promises under the SNP, the gap between the richest and poorest going to university is widening. Scottish Government statistics showed 25 per cent of young people from the poorest areas went to uni last year, compared with 60 per cent of the most wealthy kids. The gap of 34.7 per cent is up on the 32.5 per cent figure from the year before. Scotland's most disadvantaged pupils risk being left behind when it comes to higher education. No wonder so many young people feel disengaged from politics when promises like this are not kept.

Max Aarons watched his dream move to Barcelona collapse & it didn't faze him – he'd thrive at Rangers says ex-Celtic ace

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MICHAEL McGOVERN stood behind Max Aarons when he made his professional debut as an unknown teenager. Just a fortnight later, the keeper looked on in awe as the defender truly kick-started his career with his first goal for Norwich City. That's why the ex-Celtic goalie reckons his former Canaries team-mate is ideally suited for a leading role in Russell Martin's Rangers revolution. McGovern told SunSport: 'I was there when Max made his debut against Stevenage, and also when he scored his first goal against Cardiff. 'He's a good boy and I used to sit beside him in the dressing room. He was always well thought of at Norwich. 'Max was in a group of young players like Jamal Lewis, Ben Godfrey and Todd Cantwell — up-and-coming boys who were destined to move on to great things. There was a lot of talk of them all moving on to bigger clubs. Max probably moved on last, even though there was a lot of interest in him.' The most high-profile interest came from the continent, with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen both watching Aarons. But Barca boss Ronald Koeman was first to make his move, with the loan deal five years ago only collapsing due to the fact there was no obligation to buy at the end of it. McGovern added: 'I know for a fact that Barcelona offered to take him on loan a few years ago. They were struggling financially at the time, and couldn't sign players permanently in that window. 'Max had probably stayed at Norwich a season or two longer than he should have for his own development. He eventually moved to Bournemouth when Norwich were relegated. 'If Barca try to take you on loan but your club says, 'No', a lot of players would have gone kicking and screaming to the owner, sporting director, or the people who make the decisions. Rangers captain James Tavernier spotted training with ex-team-mate and old Premiership rival Ryan Porteous who branded him 'bad loser' 'Some players would have said they are not playing or not training properly. 'But Max didn't do any of that when the move fell through. It's all credit to him and his character. 'As much as he was really disappointed, he just got his head down and worked hard.' Former England Under-21 cap Aarons — who looks set to join Gers on loan — finally left Carrow Road for the Cherries in a £7million deal. He starred in the Premier League again, before falling out of favour with boss Andoni Iraola and he headed out on loan to Valencia. McGovern said: 'Max went for £7m in the end, but at that stage he only had a year left on his contract at Norwich. I'm pretty sure there were offers in previous seasons of a lot more than £7m. 'If he goes to Rangers, they are signing a player who still has a lot of potential. 'That's obvious given Max has moved for £7m and his club knocked back even bigger offers previously. 'He has maybe lost his way a little bit in the last year or two — but that's because he hasn't played so much football. 3 'Clubs in Scotland probably wouldn't get a player with as much potential if the circumstances were different. 'But Rangers would be getting a player who just needs someone to show belief in him. 'If they do that with Max, I'm sure he will repay their faith with some top-quality performances.' Cherries right-back Aarons — who can also play on the left — is likely to join on loan and will present a challenge to Gers skipper James Tavernier. He was out of favour at the Vitality Stadium and spent the second part of last season in La Liga, although he started only two games for Valencia. Now 25, Aarons spoke recently of the influence former Norwich captain Martin had on his career as a teenager. Despite never playing together in the Canaries' first team, he has described the Gers gaffer as a 'father figure'. McGovern, who spent seven years with Norwich, said: 'Towards the end of his time at the club, Russ was put in the reserves and had to train with the Under-23s. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers 'Max was in the Under-23s at the time and that was when their paths crossed. He has spoken in the past about the captain training with them. 'It could have been a dent to his pride, but Russ carried himself in the right manner — as he always did — and that stuck with Max. 'I still stay in touch with him. I always got on really well with him at Norwich and he's just a great lad. 'I really hope that he starts to play a lot of games next season for Rangers.' McGovern thought Aarons and Martin would have been reunited long before a potential reunion at Ibrox this summer. The former Northern Ireland No 1 added: 'I'm pretty sure Russ was interested in signing Max back when he was the Southampton manager. 'There was talk of Kyle Walker-Peters leaving the club and Max coming in to replace him, but it just never happened.' Aarons returned to the Cherries last month after his short spell in Spain. It included a 2-1 win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu when he went toe to toe with Vinicius Jr. But it also saw Valencia lose 7-1 at champions Barca, with Aarons now looking set for a reunion with father figure Martin in Glasgow.
