India first country to launch a Traditional Knowledge Digital Library: WHO
The WHO release follows India's proposal on the subject, leading to the development of WHO's first-ever roadmap for applying AI in traditional medicine, the Ayush Ministry said in a release.
As per the release, India's efforts to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to advance and amplify the strengths of its Ayush systems reflect the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who seeks to position the country as a global leader in digital health innovation and the integration of traditional medicine.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit in 2023, Prime Minister Modi said, 'We have developed government policies and programmes inspired by the spirit of 'AI for all'. Our endeavour is to take full advantage of the capabilities of AI for social development and inclusive growth.'
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, remarked that India's AI-led initiatives, mentioned in WHO's technical brief, reflect the deep commitment of Indian scientists to advancing traditional medicine through cutting-edge technology.
The release highlighted that the WHO publication not only validates India's growing influence in the global traditional medicine landscape but also acknowledges several key Indian innovations in the AI and Ayush space.
The WHO document showcases a range of AI-driven applications in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy, including diagnosis support systems that integrate traditional methods like pulse reading, tongue examination, and Prakriti assessment with machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks.
One of the standout features in the WHO brief is the mention of Ayurgenomics, a scientific breakthrough that combines genomics with Ayurvedic principles. This initiative aims to identify predictive disease markers and personalise health recommendations using AI-based analysis of Ayurvedic constitution types. The document also highlights efforts to decode the genomic and molecular basis of herbal formulations for repurposing in modern disease conditions--a major leap in integrating traditional wisdom with contemporary science.
India's initiatives to digitise traditional knowledge, such as the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), are praised as global models for the preservation and responsible use of indigenous medical heritage. Furthermore, AI-powered tools are being used for cataloguing and semantic analysis of ancient texts, enabling easier access to time-tested therapeutic knowledge.
Another critical aspect recognised by the WHO is the use of AI for identifying drug action pathways, conducting comparative studies across systems such as Ayurveda, TCM, and Unani, and developing artificial chemical sensors to assess traditional parameters like Rasa, Guna, and Virya. These technological interventions are helping to validate and modernise traditional formulations.
The document also applauds India's broader efforts in incorporating digital platforms for online consultations, promoting digital literacy among Ayush practitioners, and building interoperable systems to integrate traditional medicine with mainstream healthcare.
The Ministry of Ayush has welcomed this recognition as a testament to India's leadership in creating a robust scientific ecosystem for traditional medicine. It also reaffirms the country's commitment to fostering global collaboration and responsible innovation, as envisioned under WHO's broader framework for AI and traditional medicine. (ANI)

Dr Abhijat Sheth takes charge as NMC Chairperson, prioritizes quality medical education

Dr Sheth, a cardiothoracic surgeon with experience in India and the UK, emphasized his commitment to improving the quality of medical education, promoting good governance, and fostering teamwork to achieve governmental objectives. Speaking to ANI, Dr Sheth said, 'My primary focus is to improve the quality of education, easing the excess and aiming towards the good governance and teamwork to meet the governmental objectives.' Dr Gangadhar had submitted his resignation due to health issues. ''Dr Gangadhar, former chairperson, NMC, had submitted his resignation last October. As there was no suitable candidate available, his tenure was continued,' Official Sources said Dr Sheth is also the President of the National Board of Examinations in Sciences (NBEMS). He will soon be joining as the chairperson of NMC, following a mutual discussion with Dr Gangadhar, the sources said. Dr Gangadhar's tenure saw significant reforms, including grading of medical colleges, WFME accreditation, and streamlined processes, bringing more transparency and consistency in functioning of NMC, revised and more practical CBME, tweaking the qualifications criteria for faculty to make it more user friendly, focusing on faculty development for better outcomes, getting all medical colleges to embrace patient safety at undergraduate level. He institutionalised the use of Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) for real-time monitoring of faculty attendance, and he also advanced a shift towards competency-based undergraduate education. The National Medical Commision (NMC) is India's premier regulatory body overseeing medical education and practice. J-K: Anantnag Deputy Commissioner visits GMC, assures support to injured pilgrim
Anantnag (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], July 13 (ANI): Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag on Sunday visited Government Medical College (GMC) in Anantnag to assess the condition of pilgrims injured in a bus accident pertaining to Amarnath Yatra and reviewed the arrangements therein. The pilgrims were en route to Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu after completing the Amarnath pilgrimage in Kashmir when their bus met with an accident in south Kashmir's Kulgam district. At least ten people, all from Madhya Pradesh, sustained injuries and were shifted to GMC Anantnag. During his visit, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with the injured pilgrims and inquired about their health and the treatment being provided. He reassured the patients and their families of the administration's full support and directed hospital authorities to ensure the best possible medical care. One of the injured pilgrims said that the group had left early in the morning. '10-11 people have been injured. All of us are from Madhya Pradesh. We were travelling from Amarnath to Vaishno Devi and had left at 3 am. After the accident, we were brought to the hospital. We are receiving good treatment here,' he said. Another injured pilgrim, Bhagirath, said, 'I am from Mandsaur in MP. We had come for the yatra. The accident happened in Kulgam. I have sustained an injury to my eye. The arrangements here are good.' Dr Tariq, an orthopaedic specialist at GMC Anantnag, told ANI, 'We have 8-10 people here. Most of them have injuries on their head. Orthopaedically, they are all stable. After due investigations, all of them will likely be discharged in an hour. One person with chest trauma will be retained here, the rest of them will be discharged.' Further details are awaited. The 38-day annual Amarnath pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high holy cave shrine in south Kashmir began on July 3 and will conclude on August 9. (ANI)
