Milan 2-2 Fiorentina: Rossoneri rescue a point after awful start
Serie A | Milan 2-2 Fiorentina: Rossoneri rescue a point after awful start
Milan fought back from a disastrous start to hold Fiorentina 2-2 in a thrilling encounter, but the point apiece does little for either of their European ambitions.
This was a head-to-head for Europe, as the Rossoneri went into the weekend in ninth place, four points behind their opponents. Fresh off Wednesday's Coppa Italia semi-final 1-1 draw with Inter, they had Alex Jimenez suspended, plus Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Emerson Royal injured, but Tijjani Reijnders shook off a stomach bug to start. Joao Felix and Santiago Gimenez were benched for the second game in a row. The Viola beat Juventus and Atalanta to surge up the table, missing Robin Gosens, Andrea Colpani and Edoardo Bove, while Milan-owned Yacine Adli had barely featured since an ankle injury in early February.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.
Fiorentina took the lead when Yunus Musah gave it away cheaply in the final third, allowing Albert Gudmundsson to break down the left and roll across for a Moise Kean tap-in, but in trying to intercept, Malick Thiaw accidentally bundled it over the line himself.

Moments later, it was 2-0, because the Rolando Mandragora cross to the back post was knocked down by Dodo and this time Kean did get there before Fikayo Tomori to volley in from five yards.

Rafael Leao should've got Milan back into it on 20 minutes when he ran onto a ball over the top, but rather than go for goal, he flashed a ball across that was hit too hard for Tammy Abraham or Musah to get there.

Gudmundsson forced a save out of Mike Maignan, but Milan got back into the game when Abraham shrugged off Dodo, completed a give and go with Christian Pulisic to sweep home from eight yards.

Sergio Conceicao rang the alarm bell by hauling Musah off after a nightmare opening 24 minutes, introducing ex-Fiorentina striker Luka Jovic.
Luca Ranieri's sliding block prevented Abraham equalising from a Jovic through ball, then Ranieri had the ball in the net with a spectacular curler into the far top corner, but it didn't count over an earlier Parisi foul on Pulisic.
Maignan parried the Kean solo effort at the near post, but David De Gea used his leg to parry an Abraham header on Pulisic's cross.

There was an extraordinary triple opportunity on 56 minutes, as De Gea made the save on the Reijnders effort, then the Pulisic follow-up from point-blank range, before Santiago Gimenez fired onto the side-netting.
Maignan also had to use his legs to deny Lucas Beltran from close range, but Milan completed the comeback from 2-0 down to 2-2 with a former Fiorentina player.
The Tomori through ball was originally meant for Gimenez, but it went beyond him and Jovic pounced, sweeping past De Gea from eight yards.

It was wide open, a long ball over the top releasing Kean to force a sensational Maignan save one-on-one.

Rolando Mandragora also blasted over from a promising position, while De Gea stood tall as Theo Hernandez blazed past Dodo to hit a scorcher at the near post.
De Gea also rushed outside his penalty area to make a decisive tackle on Gimenez from a Pulisic ball over the top. The Mexico international landed heavily on his ribs and had to come off.
It was end to end, Kean's header straight at Maignan, then Theo Hernandez firing over on the counter, with the Rossoneri goalkeeper getting down for a strong one-handed save on Kean's scorcher.
Fiorentina had the ball in the net on 89 minutes with a sensational Dodo volley off the inside of the boot into the roof of the net, but he was offside on the Fagioli pass floated over the top.

Tottenham reveal why Ange Postecoglou was sacked despite Europa League win
Dismissed: Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Tottenham despite winning their first major trophy for 17 years (Zac Goodwin/PA Wire) Tottenham have revealed that the board unanimously decided to sack Ange Postecoglou as manager after concluding that they could not 'base the decision on emotions aligned to' winning the Europa League. Confirmation arrived on Friday evening that Spurs have sacked Postecoglou after two years at the helm, with Brentford's Thomas Frank the early front-runner to replace him. Advertisement The decision was largely taken due to the club's unprecedented 22 defeats and worst-ever 17th-place finish in the Premier League this season. It comes despite Postecoglou having delivered Spurs their first piece of major silverware in 17 years by guiding them to Europa League glory in Bilbao last month. That trophy, secured with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the final, earned Spurs a return to the Champions League for next season, but Postecoglou has been informed that he will not be the man to lead them through that campaign. Tottenham's full statement published on their official website read: 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. Advertisement 'Ange joined us from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and oversaw a period of change on the pitch, returning us to the attacking brand of football that has traditionally been associated with the Club, while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao last month — an achievement that will live with us all forever. 'We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw. 'However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. Advertisement 'This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances — injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.' Spurs added: 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. 'We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision. 'We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home. 'News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.'

Ange Postecoglou sacked by Tottenham with Thomas Frank leading contender for job
Sacked: Winning the Europa League was not enough to keep Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham (Bradley Collyer/PA Wire) Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as manager of Tottenham. Spurs officially announced on Friday evening that the Australian had been relieved of his duties just two weeks after ending the club's 17-year major trophy drought. Advertisement Postecoglou led Spurs to Europa League glory in Bilbao last month but has been sacked after overseeing their worst-ever Premier League season. Brentford manager Thomas Frank is emerging as an early front-runner to replace Postecoglou. Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola and Fulham's Marco Silva have also been under consideration but Frank has impressed Spurs with the job he has done in his seven years at Brentford. In a statement confirming the departure of Postecoglou, Tottenham said: "Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. Advertisement "We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw. Postecoglou delivered on his promise to win a trophy in his second season as Spurs ended their 17-year wait (Getty Images) 'However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place.' Postecoglou leaves Spurs halfway through a four-year contract, having joined from Celtic in 2022 and delivered on his promise to win a trophy in his second season. Spurs ended their 17-year wait for silverware by beating Manchester United in the Europa League final last month, and Postecoglou then told fans at the trophy parade in north London: 'In all the best TV shows, season three is better than season two.' Advertisement But chairman Daniel Levy felt Spurs needed a new head coach after their Premier League form nosedived and they ended the season in 17th place and with 22 defeats. Levy and new Spurs chief executive Vinai Venkatesham are set to lead the search for a new head coach. Frank has done a brilliant job since taking over Brentford in 2018, leading the Bees to promotion from the Championship in 2021 and establishing them in the Premier League. Brentford boss Thomas Frank is the leading contender to succeed Postecoglou at Tottenham (Getty Images) Under him, Brentford have finished 13th, 9th, 16th and 10th in the top-flight. He also has a proven track record of improving players, which is key for Spurs in their search for a new head coach. Advertisement Reports in March said Spurs had made Iraola their top target if they decided to part company with Postecoglou, but Bournemouth want to tie him down to a new contract. Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has also been linked with the Spurs job but Eagles chairman Steve Parish has said he will be at Selhurst Park next season.
