Polokwane City and Magesi coaches frustrated by missed chances in goalless draw

Phuti Mohafe and John Maduka face the unenviable challenge of having to re-teach and remind their players of the sole purpose of the sport they've chosen as their life-long careers.
The purpose of every football match is to put the ball in the opposition net more than they do into yours. This basic truth seemed to have been forgotten by the players of both Polokwane City and Magesi FC in their Betway Premiership opener at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Speaking during the post-match conference, the two coaches sang from the same hymnbook as they lamented their respective sides' failure to find the opposition net despite creating abundant opportunities to do so.
'So far, so good,' visiting coach Maduka told the media.
'We are happy with what we saw although we could have done better because we had good opportunities that we were supposed to score. But I am happy the boys created the chances, which means the problem is we just need to fix that (finishing).'
Mohafe echoed the same sentiments.
'I think we created better goal-scoring chances than our opponents according to my perspective even though they had more possession of the match. Offensively we tried.
"We did well, we kept the shape and did not concede. The only thing we needed was to find the net, which did not happen.'
He too admits he has his work cut out for him, having to ensure chances are made good use of in future.
'(The important lesson from this match is) putting the ball behind the net. That's what we are concerned about. If you play matches and don't score, that's an area of concern.
"When you play and you defend well, then you know it is the area that you are doing well in. But I think our creativity and our box entrance is what we need to work on.'
Except for their failure to score, Maduka also spotted some failings he will be looking to fix prior to their next match, although he somewhat dismissed them as Matchday One jitters.

However, he was happy with his players' contributions. 'We are playing away from home on Tuesday, it's not going to be easy, no game will be easy,' Seema said. 'Everybody knows that we are the new kids on the block. We are not saying anything, the only thing is that we have to collect as many points as we can. We have won, I am happy, but there is still a lot of things that did not go right. "We can keep the ball better and make better decisions. With new surroundings and leadership, they have come alive as the team transitions from empty stadiums to potentially packed home venues this campaign. Vincent Pule and Siviwe Magidigidi were the stand-out performers, not only getting on the scoresheet but impressing throughout the contest. Despite still needing time to build a well-oiled team, Seema also called for consistency from his side, especially in home matches where they enjoy some of the strongest support in the country.

TS Galaxy early season woes deepen after loss against Durban City

Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix TS Galaxy's slow start to the season continued as they suffered a confidence-knocking 2-0 loss against newcomers Durban City in their Betway Premiership opener on Sunday at the Mbombela Stadium. The Rockets endured their second straight defeat, having been beaten 3-2 by Sekhukhune United in their season-opening MTN8 match. That result was particularly painful, as they had led the Limpopo-based outfit 2-0 before conceding three goals. The Mpumalanga-based side entered their second consecutive match with only five players on the bench, after a number of last season's squad members departed and the club was reportedly unable to register new players due to a Fifa transfer ban. With such limited options at his disposal, coach Adnan Beganovic believes some of the mistakes made due to not being fully prepared for the season proved costly and ultimately played them out of the match. 'Two mistakes and two goals today, and with how we conceded, it was tough to come back and do something,' Beganovic said after his side's loss. 'It's again young players, and they need time to understand and also get more fitness and the tactical aspect.' Galaxy are now set to face a rematch with this season's high-flyers Sekhukhune United — the very team that knocked them out of the MTN8 — in a crucial midweek clash. Babina Noko not only beat Galaxy but also went on to claim a statement 1-0 win over league title favourites Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium this past Saturday. The Rockets, on the other hand, face the danger of repeating the same poor start they endured last season, which saw them stuck at the bottom of the table before the Bosnian mentor took charge from country man Sead Ramovic. In the 2024/25 campaign, Galaxy managed to take four points off Sekhukhune in their two league meetings, but this time around, Eric Tinkler's men will head into the encounter full of confidence after their strong early-season form. Beganovic admitted that his side cannot afford to dwell on their recent setbacks and stressed the need to apply themselves better in their game plans.
