Herbie Farnworth blow rocks fans as fresh details come to light ahead of Ashes

Yahoo2 days ago
English and Dolphins fans were left rocked on Friday night when star centre Herbie Farnworth went down clutching at his hamstring against the Warriors, but coach Kristian Woolf claimed he may be back before the end of the season. Farnworth has arguably been the best centre in the competition across the last two years and has been a huge part of the Dolphins success in 2025.
Farnworth was also eyeing the Ashes series at the end of the year where he was looking to inspire his English side at home against the Kangaroos. Although that is all in doubt right now after going down clutching at his hamstring in the Dolphins' thrilling 20-18 win over the Warriors in New Zealand.
Farnworth had already opened the scoring against the Warriors and had burst through for his second linebreak of the night in the first 20 minutes when he collapsed without any contact. And it immediately had fans concerned.
'This is potentially devastating for not just this game but the Dolphins' season. He's gone. The old sniper got him in fresh air. He ran past Healey like he wasn't there and there was only Tuaupiki to beat. It was two on one," Fox Sports commentator Warren Smith said.
'He was in about fourth gear and looked towards the fullback and then boom, it just goes as quickly as that.' Although Woolf has moved to offer some good news with initial reports suggesting Farnworth is looking at four to six weeks on the sidelines. The centre has scans booked back in Brisbane.
"To lose Herbie early like we did...obviously that's a big hit for us. To win the way we did, just that second-half, I thought were were brave," Woolf said. "It's obviously a hamstring...how bad it is we don't quite no yet. I would have thought at least four or six weeks."
And 'NRL Physio' Brien Seeney also suggested it isn't as bad as it may have appeared, but Farnworth could be facing anywhere between four to eight weeks on the sideline. While the latter would mean he wouldn't return unless the Dolphins made a late finals push, he could be back before the end of the regular season.
Although English fans were left concerned having watched arguably their biggest attacking weapon go down months out from the historic Ashes series against Australia. Farnworth was a guaranteed selection having torn Samoa apart in last year's two-match series. But there main attacking weapon should be lining up at Wembley in the first Ashes tour in 22 years.
This is worrying - hoping this isn't as serious as it looks and Herbie Farnworth is fit and firing for the Ashes 🙏 https://t.co/8cygSXfial

He's obviously the other centre. It will be him and Farnworth if he's not injured too badly. But if he is, then there's no one really to replace him.

Jamayne Isaako scored in the final minute of the contest to give the Dolphins a much needed win to move into the top eight. Although the Warriors, who are also dealing with a brutal injury toll, now see their position in the top four under threat.
The Broncos moved to 28 points after thrashing the Rabbitohs and the Panthers play the Titans on Saturday with the opportunity to move one point behind the Warriors. The Panthers are on a roll with a fully-fit side, while the Warriors were missing a host of stars such as James Fisher-Harris and Wayde Egan. And while Warriors coach Andrew Webster may have felt deflated after the thrilling defeat, he wasn't going to dwell on the loss.
"There's so many good signs but it's hard to take obviously because it's such a dramatic finish," he said. "No-one is going to lie, you get your hopes up ... and then it gets taken away from you and that's hard, but we've got to move on."

Alex Highsmith being evaluated for a groin injury

Steelers edge rusher Alex Highsmith could miss some time with a groin injury. Highsmith left Sunday's practice after getting hurt during a drill. Head coach Mike Tomlin said it was the only new injury in the session and that Highsmith is going to be checked out by medical personnel. "Alex Highsmith didn't finish," Tomlin said, via the team's website. "Don't know the severity of it. In the one-on-one pass rush period, he stopped. He said maybe he felt his groin. But we'll evaluate it, and I'll be more definitive next time we talk, not only about the injury but the significance of it." Highsmith dealt with groin injuries last season and missed six games. He had 45 tackles, six sacks and a forced fumble when he was healthy enough to play.

'Just absurd': Wallabies fans fume over missed Tom Lynagh act as TMO drama baffles

Wallabies fans may have been thrilled to have defeated the Lions 22-12 as lightning brought a halt to the game on Saturday night, but the missed incident on Tom Lynagh has once again frustrated rugby union fans. The Wallabies showed there was still plenty of pride left in the green and gold jersey on Saturday having outplayed the Lions across the full 80 minutes. Tom Hooper was player-of-the-match having filled in for Rob Valentini with aplomb as the Aussies were more physical than the Lions in the pouring rain. And the Aussies managed the consolation victory without flyhalf Lynagh who didn't come back on the field in the second-half after failing a HIA. Lynagh suffered a head knock during a clean out and went off the field and didn't return. Although replays showed Dan Sheehan charged into the ruck and collected Lynagh high. Lynagh was bracing for the impact, but it was still deemed dangerous play by many viewing. The incident comes after the Wallabies fans felt aggrieved they were not granted a penalty in the final seconds of last week's game at the MCG over a controversial ruck moment. But Sheehan's effort was more overt than last week and most fans agreed it was clear foul play. The Wallabies lost Lynagh for the game, with Ben Donaldson coming on, while the Lions escaped any sanction. What made the missed Lynagh moment even more frustrating was the TMO raised two other incidents against the Wallabies that were not nearly as dangerous. Nic White, playing his final game in the Wallabies jersey, rushed through the defensive line of the Lions at one stage and caused a handling error. Although the game came to a halt as the TMO reviewed what appeared to be minimal contact from White. Nothing came of the incident. Then one of the Wallabies' best, Joseph Suaalii, was at the centre of attention. With only a couple of minutes left, Suaalii made a last-ditch tackle to stop the Lions from going over for a consolation try. Although the TMO reviewed it and deemed it slightly high, but the on-field referee did not believe it was worthy of a card. But the TMO took its time reviewing the situation. And fans were left frustrated with world rugby and the TMO with the officials so willing to check every incident in the game, except the missed Lynagh high tackle. Two of the most ridiculous TMO reviews in the history of rugby tonight - the White 'shoulder charge' and the Sua'ali'i 'shoulder charge' were both the biggest wastes of after not reviewing the Lynagh absurd.#AUSvLIO #LionsTour2025 — Mark Gottlieb (@MarkGottlieb) August 2, 2025 Off! (Shoulda been.) — Peter FitzSimons (@Peter_Fitz) August 2, 2025 So, just to be clear:This TMO will stop the game to check literally EVERYTHING except Dan Sheehan's hit that took Lynagh out. What are we doing here. — Jack Quigley (@Jack_Quigley) August 2, 2025 That has to be one of the worst TMO interventions in the history of the game #LionsTour2025 — Brett Igoe (@brettruganalyst) August 2, 2025 Disgrace. Red card every day of the week. So dangerous. You can see Lynagh brace as he knows it's coming. Will World Rugby stand behind their refs again this week? In a situation like this (no matter who is playing) would have no qualms if refs hooked offending player at HT. — Tom Decent (@tomdecent) August 2, 2025 Wallabies win after game halted for lightning The Wallabies managed to stop the Lions from becoming the first team to win a 3-0 series in Australia since 1904. Although while the celebrations were dampened, the Lions had already secured the trophy with a controversial 29-26 win in Melbourne last Saturday having won the Brisbane opener 27-19. But there is plenty of excitement around this Wallabies team with coach Joe Schmidt managing to get up without the likes of Alan Alaalatoa, Valetini and Jake Gordon in the XV. Losing early didn't help and the weather was havoc. The game was stopped for 40 minutes in the second-half when lightning came within 10km of Accor Stadium. But the players returned to the soaking pitch with the Wallabies coming out stronger from the break. And captain Harry Wilson was thrilled with his team's bounce back after such a devastating setback last week. "So proud," Wilson said after the game. "Obviously it was a disappointing week this week after such a tough loss. To bounce back the way we did, to play an 80-minute performance, I'm so proud of everyone. We just wanted this game so badly. Whatever we had to do, we had to do. "To get the win was special."

Maddison's injury 'looks bad'

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison suffered "a bad injury" during the pre-season game with Newcastle in South Korea, says head coach Thomas Frank. Maddison had only been on the pitch nine minutes after coming on as a substitute, before he was seen hobbling off the ball. He was stretchered off after receiving some treatment and was in visible pain as he left the field. "We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before," said Frank post-match. "Sometimes in life and in football, things can be both beautiful and brutal. That's what we got today [in that game]. "It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son [Heung-min] from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players." Maddison missed the Europa League final with a knee problem sustained in May and was only just returning for Spurs.
