Will There Be a 'The Waterfront' Season 2?
The Waterfront released its first eight-episode season on Netflix on June 19. The show is based on creator Kevin Williamson's actual family and his life growing up in North Carolina, and the dramatic story was a hit with viewers immediately.
Fans are wondering if they'll get more of the Buckleys and their dynastic shenanigans. Here's what we know about a potential season 2 of The Waterfront so far. Warning: some spoilers for season 1 ahead.
There has been no official order for a season 2 yet. The show just came out in June, which means that Netflix may still be assessing the success of the series.
Williamson told The Hollywood Reporter a day after the show premiered that he 'went in there pitching three [seasons].'
'The good news is, with a family, I feel like we have such a great cast of actors that we could explore beyond three seasons,' he said. 'I went in there pitching three—that's [Netflix's] magic number.'
Williamson added, 'In the back of my head, [I was thinking], 'Oh, this could go four [seasons]. It's only eight episodes.' I mean, three seasons is one season of network [television]. I could go five seasons if it's a success, but I'd be happy with three. Three would be a solid number.'
In another interview with Screen Rant, Williamson said, 'I've just sort of figured out who these actors are in these roles, and I would love a chance to write for them, and lean into them, and I think the show can just go up. There's a whole second season that I have planned out, and a third season, quite frankly. I'm hoping I get the chance to tell those stories. I do think it's a fun show, and it's unlike anything I've ever done, and I just hope people enjoy it.'
The Buckley family owns a North Carolina fishing empire on the edge of financial ruin. In season 1, one of the sons, Cane, starts smuggling drugs in the fishing boat, but slipping his toe into illegal activities soon has the whole family drowning as they're caught between two drug kingpins. The Parker family and local smuggler, Grady, already have a hand in the criminal market and they don't appreciate the Buckleys moving into their territory.
The Buckleys and Parkers work to end Grady's operation, leading to a dramatic showdown where Bree Buckley and her son, Diller, end up on Grady's boat, held hostage to lure in big daddy Harlan Buckley. Bree gets shot and she and Diller narrowly escape, before Cane dispatches Grady and sends him overboard.
Williamson told The Hollywood Reporter that Grady was 'definitely dead,' adding they were 'paving the way for an equally [evil] new villain next year.'
'The Parker family would become season 2's big conflict. We've only met Emmett and his father,' he continued. 'There are more Parker family members and they will prove to be equally as complicated as the Buckleys—and more dangerous than Grady could ever be.'
Grady, played by Topher Grace, is no longer alive in The Waterfront universe, so he will probably not be returning. The Buckleys currently include Jake Weary, Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner, and Melissa Benoist. Other recurring characters in season 1 included Rafael Silva, Terry Serpico, Humberly Gonzalez, Dave Annable, Matthew Davis, Gerardo Celasco, and Michael Gaston.

What's next for 'Squid Game' after Season 3? What we know so far
Spoiler alert: This story includes details from episodes of Season 3 of "Squid Game." Netflix's juggernaut South Korean horror drama "Squid Game" came to an "unrelentingly bloody and bleak" close June 27 with an ending that hinted at a new beginning. The new season of "Squid Game" picked up right after Season 2's bloody cliffhanger, and found Gi-hun, aka Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), "at his lowest point yet." "But the Squid Game stops for no one," and Gi-hun was "forced to make some important choices in the face of overwhelming despair as he and the surviving players are thrust into deadlier games that test everyone's resolve," according to the season's synopsis. The viral dystopic show, which centers around main character Gi-hun has delighted fans since its 2021 premiere, combining classic thriller elements with a deeper exploration of the human capacity for evil and the perils of an unequal society. Season 2 of "Squid Game" is currently the third-biggest season of a TV show in Netflix history with 192.6 million views so far, the streamer said. While we are still recovering from the finale, here is what we know about the future of "Squid Game," including the potential of a spin off. Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox Will there be 'Squid Game' Season 4? No. "Squid Game" will not be returning for another season. Series director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk, in a letter to fans, had said Season 3 would be the series last. "I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new 'Squid Game' grow and bear fruit through the end of this story," Dong-hyuk said in his letter. "We'll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you're excited for what's to come." Dong-hyuk, in a recent interview, told the New York Times he's happy to be done with the series. "Yeah, I'm very tired," the creator told the media outlet. "I haven't had a deep sleep for a long time. I want to take a rest. Then I want to do feature films." "I have an idea for my next feature," he added. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle 'Chance' of 'Squid Game' spin off In the final moments of the show, as In-ho (Lee Byung-hun) drives away from Ga-yeong's house, his SUV stops at a traffic light across from a dirty L.A. alley, where he hears a loud slapping noise. Lo and behold, he spots a suited games recruiter and an American man playing ddakji. And that recruiter isn't just anyone, it's Cate Blanchett, who gives In-ho a knowing look before she goes back to slapping her prey, hinting at the possibility of a new beginning. While Netflix has not made any announcement regarding this, Dong-hyuk teased at the "possibility" of a spinoff to People at the Season 3 premiere in New York City. "I cannot just tell right now when and how it's going to happen," he told the media outlet. "But there is a chance." In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly published June 25, Hwang Dong-hyuk shared he has been thinking about potentially continuing the story. "I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between Season 1 and Season 2 when Gi-hun [Lee Jung-jae] looks around for the recruiters," Hwang told EW. "There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park [Oh Dal-su] or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that." "So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future," the creator told the media outlet. Squid Game season 3 finale ends with surprise Hollywood star cameo
The final season of Squid Game has arrived, but not without one last twist that has left fans floored. *Warning, major season three spoilers to follow* Season three of Netflix's ultra-popular Korean-language thriller, out now, picks up immediately after the bloody rebellion sparked by Player 456/ Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-jae) in the season two finale. In an attempt to end the deadly game created by a wealthy elite — where hundreds of cash-strapped individuals fight to the death for a massive cash prize — Gi-Hun re-entered the competition and recruited others to help stage a coup. But judging by the show's final scene, which features a cameo by none other than two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, it's clear the games will only continue — and on a global scale. In the last moments of the show, the game's Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) is seen being driven around Downtown Los Angeles. When stopped at a light, he hears the familiar sounds of two ddakji tiles slamming the pavement, followed by a loud slap. Rolling down the window, he makes eye contact with Blanchett, who's suited up and locked in a game of ddakji with a seemingly desperate man in an alleyway. Blanchett and the Front Man exchange a nod of acknowledgement before the latter pulls away, leaving Blanchett to return to her recruit, who begs for another attempt. 'As you wish,' she says. The Ocean's Eight actor's unexpected cameo left fans in complete and utter shock. 'WDYM CATE BLANCHETT IS IN SQUID GAME S3 ?!?!' one wrote on X, with a second arguing that her appearance was 'the only good thing about the season.' 'MY JAWS DROPPED??? MOTHER?? IN MY GAME OF SQUIDS?' a third added. Another commented: 'Omg I did not see this coming wow the gag of the century !! I love love cate.' Speaking to Netflix's Tudum about the Tár star's role, director Hwang Dong-hyuk explained: 'We thought having a woman as a recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing. 'And as for why Cate Blanchett, she's just the best, with unmatched charisma,' he gushed. 'Who doesn't love her? So we were very happy to have her appear. We needed someone who could dominate the screen with just one or two words, which is exactly what she did. 'If Gong Yoo is the Korean Recruiter, I thought she would be the perfect fit as the American Recruiter, bringing a short but gripping and impactful ending to the story,' he noted. Hwang remembered being deeply impressed by Blanchett's talent while filming. 'During the shoot, she reminded me of what true talent looks like,' he said. 'Even with just a few looks and lines, her performance was mesmerizing.' But her skills didn't stop there. 'She was amazing at playing ddakji,' Hwang added. 'I believe she successfully flipped the ddakji with her first try, and we were able to get that one long take right away.' Season three of Squid Game is streaming now on Netflix.
