Netflix's controversial new thriller watched 2,400,000 times gets second season
Netflix has officially confirmed the live-action manga series Bet will be back for a second season after millions tuned in to the first. Based on the Japanese manga Kakegurui (which translates to 'compulsive gambler'), the new Netflix adaptation raked in 2.4 million views in its first week on the streamer and spent three weeks on the global top 10 list of English-speaking shows. Starring Miku Martineau, Ayo Solanke and Eve Edwards, the drama sees Japanese teen Yumeko start at the exclusive boarding school St Dominic's, where gambling is a way of life. Literally. Students forgo traditional curriculum, instead playing various games and gambling huge sums of money to rise up the school's social hierarchy. As students wager their parents' cash, Yumeko uncovers her hidden knack with a deck of cards which soon morphs into an obsession. The show will return for a second season of 10 episodes at 30 minutes a piece, following a similar format to the first installment. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Bet showrunner and Warrior Nun creator Simon Barry confirmed the news in a statement, saying: 'I'm extremely happy for our amazing Bet fans from all over the world, who get to enjoy another season, and for this incredible cast and crew to return to St. Dominic's for more gambling and general madness.' Live-action adaptations of a manga can be a tricky business, given it's hard to please both existing fans and newcomers who haven't read the comic books – prompting some mixed reactions online. Certain viewers leapt to the show's defence on X, praising the adaptation which currently holds a 60% score on Rotten Tomatoes. @ite0luwakiishi shared: 'I actually liked the 'bet' series on Netflix…' while @mxxnlitt added: 'People complaining about the bet series on Netflix but I'm eating it up idc I get entertained by anything.' @buffylipino posted: 'Y'all idk but the new show on Netflix Bet is actually good I hope there is a season 2.' Elsewhere, the bulk of the criticism for the show surrounded unfavourable comparisons of the Americanised adaptation to the live-action Japanese TV show, which is also on Netflix. More Trending Taking to Google reviews to voice their misgivings, Ole Smenes wrote: 'Sooo an American version of the Japanese TV show. The Korean version is waaay better the drama is darker. This is just a baaad copy of them.' Mery Onghad had a similar opinion, writing: 'The Japanese version may have been over the top at times, but it still delivered an exciting plot. In contrast, the American version falls flat. There's surprisingly little focus on gambling and far too much on a side plot about a girl trying to avenge her parents. View More » 'The characters in the US adaptation often feel exaggerated to the point of being cringeworthy, and the acting doesn't help. Overall, it lacks the intensity and charm of the original. Don't waste your time on this version.' Got a story? Creepy mannequins of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez seen in Venetian gondola
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Creepy mannequins of Jeff Bezos and fianceé Lauren Sanchez were spotted gliding on a gondola through Venice ahead of the billionaire's wedding in the city. The two six-foot mannequins were seen floating down the famous Grand Canal in a stunt protesting the lavish marriage ceremony planned by the Amazon boss. The third richest man in the world is due to tie the knot with television journalist and author Lauren Sanchez in the city of romance on Tuesday. But protestors have vowed to disrupt the event which reportedly cost upwards of $15million to organise. They launched the stunt in protest at perceived over-tourism in the city and the 'absurd wealth theatre' on display. The bizarre dolls were dressed up in wedding attire as they were guided down the Grand Canal by a black and white-stripped gondolier. Behind the eye-catching event is an anonymous protest group called Konn Artiss, who paraded another Bezos mannequin in the heart of the Vatican hours earlier. A golden Bezos, dressed in dollar bills, was placed in St Mark's Square by the group. The statue, surrounded in bird feed, was swamped by pigeons before being carted off by the police. The group say their attention-seeking events are protesting the 'global spectacle of luxury' of the wedding. They told Metro: 'Venice is sinking year on year, yet the richest man on earth is celebrating like a Roman emperor. 'This is a city where the working class are working hard and cannot pay their bills. 'We are not protesting love, we are protesting luxury without accountability. It is a spectacle of excess when we live in a time when the gap between the richest and poorest is getting bigger. 'The power the working class have is seemingly diminishing.' The anonymous 'merry band' say they are planning something else in Venice to coincide with the wedding. Konn's stunts followed a protest by the charity Greenpeace on Monday in the square. They unfurled a banner, which read: 'If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax' in thick capital letters. Other activists have come together under the slogan 'No Space for Bezos' – a twist on the Amazon founder's space exploration project called Blue Origin. They say the wedding comes at the expense of locals, who are facing a housing shortage and the closure of basic services. But some locals are welcoming the wedding celebrations, as are Italian and Venetian officials. They have adopted the slogan 'Yes Venice Can' and mainly consist of Venetian hoteliers, restaurateurs and business owners. In a statement, the group said: 'We cannot allow a noisy minority to discredit the image of this city in the eyes of the world. 'We will put on the very best welcome for Bezos, as we always do for those who choose Venice as a holiday destination or as a backdrop to big events. 'Venice is a city that welcomes people – it doesn't turn them away.' More Trending The Bezos-Sanchez nupitals began lavishly with a foam party on board Bezos's £371 million superyacht. The three-masted ship, named the Koru, will arrive in Venice this week as guests fly in on private jets for the ceremony. Rumoured to be among the guests are Kylie Jenner and Oprah Winfrey, as well as Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Lady Gaga and Elton John are also reportedly attending. Brit, 18, on first ever solo flight stranded in Doha for more than a day
A British teenager flying on her own for the first time has been stranded in Doha for more than 24 hours, after she was caught in the crossfire of mounting conflict in the Middle East. Jamie Mason Walker set off from Heathrow Airport on Sunday evening. After a stopover at Doha Hamad International Airport, she was due to arrive in Melbourne, Australia, to visit her great-aunt on Monday. But her flight from Heathrow was delayed, meaning she missed her connecting flight. Qatar then closed its airspace amid missile strikes and rising tensions between Israel, Iran, and the US. Iran launched a missile attack on the US military's Al-Udeid Air Base near Doha on Monday evening, forcing one of the world's busiest airports to cancel all departures and divert arrivals. Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, shortly after the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites. But within hours, Israel claimed Iran had broken it. Now, with concerns about World War Three rising, thousands of people are stuck in airports waiting to get home. Jamie, who recently turned 18, was gifted a three-week trip to Australia by her family so she could visit her great-aunt, who lives in Melbourne. While she has been to Greece and Barcelona, the student, who starts university in September, has never flown long-haul or had to make a connection before. It is her first time outside Europe. Her grandmother Angie Jeffs, from Northampton, said the dream trip had turned into the family's worst nightmare. So far she believes Jamie, who is also from Northampton, doesn't know about the Al-Udeid Air Base bombing and Qatari airspace being closed down, instead attributing her travel disruption to general delays. Angie explained: 'We haven't told her why the airport was shut down, she's presuming it's just delays, we didn't want to worry her if we started telling her there was a bomb near where she is. 'She doesn't know anything, unless she heard other people talking about it, but if she did she didn't mention it to me.' Angie's sister in Melbourne has been on the phone with the British Embassy in Australia, trying to find out when Jamie will be able to get on a plane to Melbourne. So far, they say she was told she'd be put on the next plane to Melbourne. But two flights have taken off without Jamie since she arrived in Doha. Angie said: 'We're all very worried, my sister just called the embassy to find out what's going on and why she wasn't put on those planes. 'We just don't seem to be getting any information, so we just have to wait and so does she – I just hope it doesn't put her off flying.' Discussing Jamie's experience of the airport, Angie said: 'Luckily we paid for someone to collect her from the plane in Doha and put her on the next plane, they have been helping her. 'She's in a lounge where she can have free food and she slept there last night. 'There are lots of other people in the same boat, that lounge is absolutely heaving with people. Metro's travel team has looked into whether there are any restrictions on UK passengers planning to travel to Doha. Hamad International Airport, a major transit hub and the world's second busiest airport behind Dubai, was closed from Monday evening into the early hours of Tuesday, around 1.20am. But the UK Foreign Office has not advised against travelling to Qatar. On Tuesday morning, the UK and the US lifted their 'shelter in place' orders. Because of this, it's unlikely you'll be able to cancel your trip and receive a full or even partial refund. The FCDO warns of travel disruption, including snap airspace closures, as well as delayed and cancelled flights. Anyone travelling to or transiting in Qatar is advised to keep up to speed with Foreign Office guidance, and monitor local media for the latest information. 'She said there's quite a few people who have chatted to her, everyone seems calm. 'The airport staff are very friendly but we don't suppose they can do a lot. More Trending 'She met a couple of ladies with children who said they would watch over her while she had a couple of hours' sleep, which was nice of them.' Jamie is due to return home on July 13, and the family are desperately hoping she won't be stuck in the same situation on her return trip. 'We'd rather she was stranded in Melbourne because at least she's got family there,' Angie added. The family's most recent update from Jamie is that she is due to get on a plane to Melbourne at 8.30pm tonight, local time, but whether this pans out as planned remains to be seen.
