Egyptian man held over suspicion of using fake passport

KOTA BARU: The state Immigration Department has arrested a 28-year-old Egyptian man for allegedly using a fake passport while conducting transactions at its complex here yesterday.
Its director Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohd Hassan said the suspect was detained after his officers discovered irregularities while checking his passport.
"The suspect had applied to renew his Long-Term Social Visit Pass as a foreign spouse of a Malaysian.
"Checks revealed the Egyptian passport submitted by the suspect showed he had overstayed for more than two years.
"He also submitted a newly issued passport bearing the same passport number as the previous one," he said.
He added the man was arrested on suspicion of presenting a falsified Egyptian passport and is currently being held at the Tanah Merah Immigration Detention Depot for further investigations.
"The department calls on the public to provide information about undocumented migrants or any unlawful activities involving foreign nationals.
"Stern and uncompromising action will be taken against any parties found to be harbouring, assisting or colluding in the protection of illegal immigrants," he said.

[UPDATED] Woman from China remanded over assault on immigration staff at KLIA

SEPANG: A woman from China has been remanded for four days for allegedly injuring an immigration counter personnel at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). KLIA deputy district police chief Superintendent Albany Hamzah said the remand order took effect on Thursday. "The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code (obstructing a public servant), Section 332 (causing hurt to a public servant), and Section 353 (using criminal force against a public servant). "The public is advised not to speculate on the matter, as it could disrupt police investigations," he said when contacted today. It was reported that the Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia had condemned the assault on a female immigration officer at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 yesterday. Its president, Ajeet Singh, said the union takes the incident seriously and has urged the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) to take proactive measures to safeguard officers on duty as well as travellers. He said provoking or assaulting civil servants is subject to legal action, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a Malaysian or foreign citizen. "Any action that contravenes Malaysian law can be considered a challenge to the country's legal sovereignty, and every tourist is obliged to respect the laws of the country they are visiting," he said in a statement yesterday. Earlier, a Chinese national was arrested after allegedly behaving aggressively and injuring an immigration counter officer during a departure check at KLIA1. The incident occurred at 7.40pm when the woman, accompanied by a man and two children, approached the counter for immigration clearance. The officer on duty discovered that they had no records of entry into Malaysia and referred the matter to a supervisor for further verification. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency said the suspect became agitated when instructed to allow other passengers to proceed while checks were carried out. She allegedly hurled abuse at the officer, pulled her headscarf, and pushed her head towards a pillar in front of the counter.

The union said such acts are tantamount to challenging the sovereignty of Malaysian law, and tourists must respect the laws of the countries they visit. 'Immigration officers are the frontline defenders of the nation's sovereignty,' its president Ajeet Singh said in a statement here. 'Assaulting them while on duty is not only an uncivilised act, but also tarnishes the nation's image and jeopardises security at international entry points.' KPISM said the incident occurred at around 7.40am when a foreign passenger verbally abused, pulled the officer's headscarf, and pushed her head, causing minor injuries. 'KPISM stresses that any act of provocation or injury against public servants is subject to legal action, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a Malaysian citizen or a foreign national,' he said. It also urged the ministry to review a proposal to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) at every counter for more comprehensive monitoring of immigration processes. KPISM, which said the officer is a union member, called on the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) management to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of both immigration officers and travellers. It demanded the investigation be expedited and prosecution carried out without compromise against the perpetrator. It said the union will provide welfare and legal assistance to the officer until the justice process is completed. Yesterday, the AKPS said a Chinese national was arrested after allegedly acting aggressively and injuring an Immigration counter officer during a departure inspection at the KLIA Terminal 1. In the 7.40 pm incident, the woman, who was with a man and two children, approached the counter for immigration departure inspection when the officer on duty found that they had no records of entry into Malaysia, and referred the matter to the supervisor for further checks. — Malay Mail Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia KLIA Terminal 1 lead
