Man Utd sent 15-word message in immediate transfer blow after Bryan Mbeumo deal

Daily Mirror22-07-2025
Manchester United have been linked with a move for Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand, but a team-mate's comment has indicated that Ruben Amorim's Red Devils may struggle to land their target
Manchester United face a fight to secure the signature of Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand. The Red Devils have just wrapped up a deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, shelling out an initial £65million plus £6m in potential add-ons.

Mbeumo joins Ruben Amorim's squad alongside fellow newcomer Matheus Cunha, but United could still make plenty of moves before the transfer window shuts. The club have been linked with Sporting skipper Hjulmand, who Amorim has previously worked with during his time at the Portuguese club.

It has already been a busy summer for Sporting, having been locked in transfer discussions over star striker Viktor Gyokeres. However, one of Hjulmand's team-mates is not expecting the holding midfielder to also head for the exit this summer.

Following Sporting's recent pre-season win over Sunderland, defender Ivan Fresneda was quizzed about the possibility of Hjulmand leaving. "Hjulmand is our captain and he's very happy here with us, I have no doubt," Fresneda bluntly told O Jogo.
According to Teamtalk, United have earmarked Hjulmand as a potential solution to strengthen their midfield, with Amorim keen on a reunion with the Denmark international. The 26-year-old joined Sporting after current United midfielder Manuel Ugarte joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2023.
He featured in 47 matches across all competitions as Sporting clinched both the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal last term.
The report indicates that Hjulmand, who has also caught the eye of Juventus, could set United back as much as £52m. Portuguese publication A Bola claims the midfielder also possesses a release clause worth approximately £69m (€80m).
Following Hjulmand's debut campaign at Sporting, Amorim appointed him as the club's new skipper. Yet the Dane was open about his emotions after the manager agreed to join United in November 2024.

"I told him in front of the other players that we were disappointed with his departure," Hjulmand told A Bola. "We were counting on him to help us all fight for the second title.
"He himself said the same thing at the start of the season. But afterwards, I also told Ruben that we understood his decision."
He added: "Many players wanted to stay at Sporting with Ruben Amorim because he is a great coach."

The admiration is mutual as Amorim previously branded Hjulmand as the most "complete" midfielder he had coached at Sporting. When comparing Hjulmand to his Sporting predecessors Manuel Ugarte and Joao Palhinha, the United manager was effusive in his praise.
"It's a normal evolution and then there's also the merit of scouting," Amorim said. "I love Palhinha and Ugarte, but I would say that Hjulmand is the most complete player in his position."
The defensive midfielder made 65 appearances under Amorim, clinching the Primeira Liga title together in 2024. Hjulmand still has three years left on his Sporting contract.

‘This can't be real' – Marcus Rashford gets ‘miss of the season already' as he Man Utd loanee fires wide of open goal

FANS have said Marcus Rashford has already earned the miss of the season after a horror effort for Barcelona. The forward joined the LaLiga champions on loan with an option to buy from Manchester United this summer. Rashford, 27, was named in the starting XI to take on Serie A side Como in the club's final pre-season game. With the Spanish side cruising 4-0, Rashford created a great opportunity to get himself on the scoresheet. He rounded goalkeeper Jean Butez to give himself an empty net to slot the ball into. However, Rashford fluffed his lines and put his shot wide of the Como goal. The former England international looked shocked at the miss as he whipped his hands above his head. Fans were left stunned by the miss as they reacted on social media. One posted: "Rashford with the miss of 25/26 already." A second wrote: "This is the miss of the season." A third commented: "No way he missed that." A fourth said: "How did he miss tha." Another added: "That's him back to Man United then." Fortunately for Rashford, the likes of Fermin Lopez, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal had already scored. He had a hand in Raphinha's goal as he played a brilliant cross to set up the Brazilian. The miss has come just days after Rashford scored his first in Barcelona colours. He found the net in the friendly against Korean outfit Daegu FC on August 4. More to follow...

Estêvão wow as Delap and João Pedro state cases to lead Chelsea line

Chelsea played their final pre-season game on Sunday, with several new faces impressing in a 4-1 win against AC Milan at Stamford Bridge. Having returned from their Club World Cup triumph in the United States last month, Chelsea were playing only their second warm-up match, after beating Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on Friday, and this is what we learnt: Enzo Maresca said on Friday that bringing in a new centre half was a 'priority' after the news that Colwill is likely to be out of action for the rest of the year, having had surgery on a knee. However, this weekend's fixtures have enabled the head coach to assess the options at his disposal. On Sunday he opted for a partnership of Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah, who fared well coping with sporadic Milan attacks, especially Adarabioyo, who recovered well twice with last-ditch tackles. There was cause for concern, though, when Chalobah limped off just before the hour mark with an ankle injury. After landing awkwardly in a challenge, the centre back played on for four minutes before being substituted for 19-year-old Josh Acheampong. Chalobah left the field unaided and was walking less gingerly after the final whistle. João Pedro impressed again as he picked up his fifth goal in his past four games for Chelsea. He headed home Pedro Neto's cross from close range in the opening ten minutes to put his side 2-0 up after an own goal from the centre back Andrei Coubis had given them the lead in the fifth minute. Thirteen minutes later João Pedro went through on goal and grappled with Coubis, who was sent off for pulling the striker to the ground. Battling for a starting place up front is fellow new arrival Liam Delap, who scored twice in a 30-minute cameo. His first came from the penalty spot, before he struck an instinctive first-time finish into the far corner of the net. 'I don't want to say it's a competition,' João Pedro said when asked about his and Delap's performances. 'It's very good for Chelsea to have both strikers of a good level. Last game he didn't score but today he scored two goals and I'm very happy for him.' The excellent starts made by the duo have contributed to Nicolas Jackson falling out of favour. The Senegal striker was absent from the squad again after reaching an agreement with the club in the week that he can leave. Estêvão, 18, has already become a fan favourite despite featuring only twice since his arrival from Palmeiras. The cheer from the home fans when the Brazil winger's name was announced was notably loud. Initially he replaced Cole Palmer in the centre and soon won the penalty that was dispatched by Delap. He was eventually moved out to his more natural role on the right and almost got on the scoresheet when he cut in and fired with his left foot to force a full-stretch save from Mike Maignan. Jamie Gittens's impact was more understated on the left on his first start, but he did play a part in the first goal by winning a free kick deep into the Milan half that led to Coubis's own goal. The winger, who was signed from Borussia Dortmund, found space in dangerous areas but frequently struggled to find the target. 'Most of them are on the scoresheet today. They have started well,' Reece James, the Chelsea captain, said of the new arrivals. 'They are very talented boys and great additions to the team.'

Man Utd star agrees to leave but Ruben Amorim told to block transfer

Ruben Amorim has been urged to make a U-turn and intervene after Rasmus Hojlund reluctantly agreed to leave Manchester United. Hojlund, 22, recently insisted he intended to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place in the team despite the club's interest in Benjamin Sesko. Manchester United have since completed a £74m deal for Slovenia striker Sesko, raising more doubt over Hojlund's future at the club. United spent £72m on Hojlund back in 2023 but the Danish forward has flopped at Old Trafford, scoring just four Premier League goals last season. Amorim left Hojlund on the bench for United's final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina on Saturday, instead opting to play Mason Mount as a false nine. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Sesko watched on from the stands after being unveiled to the fans inside Old Trafford and is expected to come straight into the side for United's Premier League opener against Arsenal next weekend. Following the arrival of Sesko, Hojlund has reluctantly accepted his Manchester United career is over, according to talkSPORT. Italian giants AC Milan are open to signing Hojlund, who enjoyed a promising season in Serie A before his miserable spell in the Premier League. Hojlund reportedly rejected a move to RB Leipzig earlier in the summer during United's talks for Sesko but has now changed his stance and agreed to leave. Manchester United want around £30m for Hojlund but AC Milan are hoping to secure his signature on an initial loan deal. Ex-Old Trafford striker Dimitar Berbatov admits Hojlund has been a disappointment but says he could benefit from the competition from Sesko's arrival should he stay put. 'I am excited with Sesko going to United, but at the same time I am a bit cautious because Hojlund and Zirkzee were performing great in their previous clubs. 'I watched how they moved, how they bullied defenders, how they scored goals, but then going to the Premier League, they found it difficult to adjust. 'And the stats speak for themselves, right? Three goals, four goals, for a striker you are going to be disappointed with yourself. 'It was difficult campaign for them and it's a difficult period that they are going through, and now with another striker coming in, of course the competition is going to be high. Victor Lindelof (released) Jonny Evans (released) Christian Eriksen (released) Marcus Rashford (Barcelona on loan) Other Man Utd players linked with summer moves: Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia 'When you buy a striker now you start to think, 'Well am I going to play? Is my place in United? Am I still belonging here? Do I need to start looking for a club?' 'Or maybe then you start thinking, 'Alright, I like the competition. Now I'm going to show you. Now I'm going to fight for my place. Now I'm going to bring the fire.' 'So it's a two-way scenario. You choose the one I said or the other. So let's see what they are going to bring to the table as well. 'You always want the competition, but at the same time, as a striker, because we think we're special, you need to feel welcome and wanted in the team, by the coach, by everybody. More Trending 'Then your motivation is going to be higher and your self-esteem is going to be higher. It's a lot of factors. It's not easy, but it's all in the head.' Fellow former Manchester United star Mikael Silvestre also believes it would be a mistake to offload Hojlund before the transfer deadline. 'Marcus Rashford has gone and there are not a lot of strikers around, Joshua Zirkzee is a different type of striker that doesn't make those runs in behind the defence,' Silvestre told Hajper. 'He is another type of player for certain games, certain opposition. But no, you need competition, need quality, so I wouldn't rush into sending Rasmus Hojlund out on loan if Sesko signs. Absolutely not.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
