From cultural adaptations to direct dubs: How Tamil cinema's remake culture has evolved across generations

Time of India29-07-2025
Now, South Indian films are being released simultaneously in Tamil and other South Indian languages. In the past, it was common for people to buy the remake rights of a film released in one language and then film it in other languages.

But now, every multilingual film is being released in Tamil simultaneously. As a result, the remake culture is clearly declining.
When remakes had soul
The directors and actors of the previous generation adapted the story in the remake films to suit their culture and presented the screenplay according to the taste of the Tamil fans. For example, the Malayalam film 'Manichitrathazhu' was transformed into 'Chandramukhi' in Tamil. Although the story angle remained the same, the subtle changes in the format impressed the audience.
Similarly, many hit Hindi and Telugu films have been successful in Tamil.
The main quality of the previous generation was their ability to retell the story from their own perspective. The audience had the feeling that the same story is being changed for them to suit them. Those remakes were well-ingrained in the minds and culture of Tamil audiences. But today, that research, that attention to detail has waned. The style of approaching the remakes only from a commercial perspective is not conducive to positive audience acceptance.
Why is Tamil cinema losing the art of cultural storytelling?
Producers and directors from today's generation often take the film to Tamil audiences through simultaneous translation or dubbing. This trend has given fans the opportunity to experience films more quickly and has reduced the demand for remakes. But here, there is also a new challenge: not all cultural differences in translated films are understandable to Tamils.
One drawback of today's remakes is that most films only do so at the translation level.

The underlying sentiments of the story, the feelings of that community, all of that don't get enough dimension in Tamil. They don't change the story from their perspective like directors did in the past. This also affects the audience's experience.
'I don't understand why we compare a remake to the original. Comparisons limit our enjoyment—in effect, they kill entertainment' said director R Kannan, who made several Tamil remakes, during his speech at 'The Great Indian Kitchen' promotions.
'I was offered to remake 3 Idiots in Tamil—but I refused. Recreating a role exactly? It's impossible for me. Comparison ruins the magic of the first experience,' said R Madhavan on clarifying '3 Idiots' Tamil remake 'Nanban' at 'Laal Singh Chaddha' pre-release event.
"A remake is like an adopted child, success lies in making it believe you're its true parent, even if the world never stops reminding you that you're not," said
in his exclusive chat with Etimes.
Then vs now
Overall, the remake culture is experiencing a shift. The older generation carried it with uniqueness, but today's generation does it faster, in less time. While the digital age has allowed stories to spread quickly around the world, the ability to tell a story from a new perspective with inherent impact is lacking in today's remake culture.

Kannadasan Wrote This Kamal-Rajini Movie Song Half-Asleep — And Still Won A National Award!

1/9 The 71st National Film Awards were recently announced, with Tamil cinema receiving notable recognition. The award for Best Tamil Film was given to Parking (2023), while GV Prakash was named Best Music Director for Vaathi (2023). Parking also earned Ramkumar Balakrishnan the award for Best Screenplay, and veteran actor MS Bhaskar won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the same film. Among the many fascinating tales surrounding the National Awards is an intriguing story about the legendary lyricist Kannadasan, who won a National Award for a song he wrote while half asleep. Kannadasan is often the first name that springs to mind when one thinks of poets. His lyrics possess a distinctive charm, and beyond songwriting, he also acted in numerous films. Having penned songs for approximately 4,500 films, produced six films, and authored many books, Kannadasan even went so far as to write his own obituary. Despite his many achievements, one of his most memorable was winning a National Award for a song in a Rajinikanth film, composed while he was half asleep. Do you know which film featured that song? It was Apoorva Raagangal (1975), directed by K Balachander, which marked Rajinikanth's debut in Tamil cinema and also starred Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Srividya. The music was composed by MS Viswanathan. During the filming of Apoorva Raagangal, K Balachander and MS Viswanathan were discussing a song for the film with actor Kamal Haasan present. Balachander suggested holding a rehearsal the following day, but MS Viswanathan explained that Kannadasan's lyrics had not yet arrived. This irritated K Balachander, who questioned how long they would have to wait for the poet. MS Viswanathan tried to calm him, but when Kamal Haasan mentioned that Kannadasan was sleeping upstairs, K Balachander's anger intensified. He threatened to cancel the shoot, which woke Kannadasan, who overheard the commotion. After an hour, MS Viswanathan sent someone to check if Kannadasan was awake. The person found that Kannadasan had gone, but his assistant Anandhu handed over a piece of paper to K Balachander. Upon opening it, he was astonished to discover seven different songs written by Kannadasan. Confused about which song to choose, Balachander selected Ezhuswarangalukkul, sung by Vani Jayaram. This song, written in a semi-drowsy state, became immensely popular and won the National Award. Vani Jayaram also received the Best Female Playback Singer award for her performance. The film Apoorva Raagangal went on to win a total of three National Awards.

A South superstar's private apology to Tamannaah Bhatia now goes public. Actress reveals superstar's behaviour after she refused a scene

Synopsis Tamannaah Bhatia, a prominent South Indian actress, recently shared her early career challenges, including an incident where a male actor suggested replacing her after she voiced discomfort with a scene. She also addressed rumors linking her romantically to Virat Kohli, clarifying their interaction was purely professional and limited to a single commercial shoot. Agencies Tamannaah Bhatia's Journey: Rising Through Rejection, Rumours, and Resolve Tamannaah Bhatia, now a top-tier actress in South Indian cinema, didn't have an easy beginning in the film industry. During a candid conversation with The Lallantop , the Baahubali star reflected on the early challenges she faced as a young newcomer. Entering the entertainment world at a tender age, she was forced to confront the harsh reality that female actors are often seen as replaceable. This awareness struck early in her career, shaping her understanding of the industry's recalled being cast alongside a prominent South Indian male actor, only to find herself in a troubling situation. While filming, she encountered a scene that made her deeply uncomfortable. Choosing to voice her concerns and uphold her personal boundaries, she informed the team that she was not at ease performing it. However, her decision wasn't well received. The male lead, offended by her refusal, responded strongly—suggesting that the production should simply replace her with another actress. Reflecting on the moment, Tamannaah shared that being young in the industry often opens the door to manipulation. She noticed that some individuals go out of their way to undermine a newcomer's confidence by insinuating that their opinions don't matter. In her case, she experienced several instances where people attempted to embarrass her or question her professionalism simply because of her age. However, she refused to let these experiences shake her resolve. "I think people try to shake your confidence because you are young and show that you don't know it. You don't understand because you are not that age. So that happened many times. People try to humiliate you. I was once doing a film with a very big South star. And in some scenes, I had to say that I cannot do this. I am not comfortable with this. There was something in that scene with which I was not comfortable. I said that I am not comfortable doing this scene. Then the star said, 'Change the heroine'," she recalled. Despite the tension on set, the actor involved later approached Tamannaah to apologise. The next day, he admitted his behavior had been driven by anger and offered a sincere apology. This act of contrition, though unexpected, helped mend the situation to some extent. But the experience left her with a lasting lesson about power dynamics in the film also took the opportunity to clear the air regarding earlier rumours linking her romantically with Indian cricketer Virat Kohli. The speculation had emerged after the two appeared together in a commercial. Putting the record straight, she clarified that their interaction was strictly professional and lasted just a single day. She never spoke to or met him again following that the professional front, Tamannaah has several major projects lined up. She will be seen in four Hindi films—Romeo (a Vishal Bhardwaj directorial co-starring Shahid Kapoor and Tripti Dimri), Ranger, IPS Maria, and Vvan: Force of the Forrest.
