Big Bang Theory fans divided over spinoff casting bombshell after title reveals focus on minor character
Big Bang Theory fans are split over the latest casting news for the upcoming Max spinoff, which will focus on a minor character from the beloved sitcom.
Shortly after the show was announced as a spinoff centered around Kevin Sussman's Stuart Bloom and given the title Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, Warner Bros. Television boss Channing Dungey hinted that the series' timeline might allow for appearances from original characters.
Unlike previous Big Bang Theory spinoffs Young Sheldon and Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage, which were prequels happening before the original's timeline, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe marks a significant shift.
The Stuart-centric series could bring back familiar faces like Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, or any of the original characters, all of whom had longstanding relationships with Stuart.
When asked if the old gang would 'pop in' during a recent interview with Deadline, Dungey teased with a five-word response: 'I would never say never.'
With Penny (Cuoco) and Leonard (Galecki) potentially showing up in Stuart's world, fans quickly took to social media to express their thoughts.
One Reddit user wrote, 'I'd want to watch it just to see who makes guest cameos.'
Another fan shared concerns about the OG characters being altered for the spinoff: 'Hopefully they don't change too much about the characters reprising their roles.'
One fan even compared the new show to a major sitcom, writing, 'This is like creating a Friends spinoff set around Gunther…' referencing the side character from the iconic series starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and the late Matthew Perry.
Others questioned how many spinoffs can truly succeed.
One user posted, 'I'm intrigued how much more Chuck Lorre can milk/expand this franchise down the line (unless 'Fails to Save the Universe' is a hint this may be the last spinoff).'
Of course, not everyone is on board with the spinoff.
One fan said, 'I feel a whole show on Stuart would get very old very quick. He was okay in small doses.'
The casting news comes on the heels of John Ross Bowie, 53, who played the plasma physicist Barry Kripke, joining the upcoming series.
With Penny (Cuoco) and Leonard (Galecki) potentially showing up in Stuart's world, fans quickly took to social media to express their thoughts
Bowie, who was a recurring presence throughout much of The Big Bang Theory, was downgraded to a guest role in seasons four and ten before the show concluded.
One of Barry's standout characteristics was his rhotacism, which gave him an Elmer Fudd-like charm as he swapped 'R' and 'L' sounds with 'W' when speaking.
Barry first caught attention in season two's The Killer Robot Instability, where he discovered the gang had built a robot. In response, he created his own robot, the Kripke Krippler, setting up a battle for supremacy.
Bowie has signed a talent holding deal with WBTV, ensuring his availability should the series make it through any remaining hurdles, Deadline reports.
Shortly after the news broke, Bowie shared a screenshot of the article on Instagram to celebrate.
He joked in the caption, 'Exciting news from @deadline… pardon me… deadwine,' imitating his character's signature speech.
The spinoff has also added notable talent to its team, with Zak Penn—known for X2: X-Men United, The Avengers, and Ready Player One—joining Bill Prady, co-creator of The Big Bang Theory.
Together with Chuck Lorre, they'll co-write the pilot script and executive produce the series.

New babies announced in unusual way in Switzerland as people left baffled
A woman who has moved to Switzerland has shared interesting insights she has discovered since moving - and people are only just finding out about the sweet way that new babies are celebrated The arrival of a newborn is always a cause for celebration, with baby showers, 'welcome to the world ' parties, and an array of gifts, balloons, and cards marking the occasion worldwide. Yet, many have only just cottoned on to the charming tradition that heralds the birth of babies in Switzerland. Curiosity has been piqued among travellers to Switzerland who've spotted curious signs adorned with animals or characters, alongside a name and date of birth, leaving them puzzled about their meaning. An Australian woman, now residing in Switzerland and known as Aussie Spat mum online, has taken to sharing fascinating customs she's encountered since her move. In a video, the mum revealed: "In Switzerland, when a baby is born, the whole village gets the news... literally!". She elaborated: "Birth signs with the baby's name and date of birth pop up on buildings, balconies and front yards to welcome the newest little one!". These birth announcements, referred to as 'Geburtstafeln', are essentially birth signs usually mounted on poles or trees. They remain on display until family and friends have visited to fete the new arrival, after which they are removed. Commenting on the Instagram post, an individual explained: "Let me share how it's done in central Switzerland: you get them from friends, family, godparents or your 'verein'. After one year, the parents are supposed to take them down with a 'Täfelifescht'. This means you organise a barbecue or similar social gathering event where all the people are invited who got you a sign." Another Swiss person chimed in: "We use this as an open competition for the worst baby names." While one commenter was charmed by the tradition: "I need to experience this land of joy and happiness." One user shared that they follow a similar custom in the Netherlands, while someone else noted: "In Germany some people show it by hanging newborn clothes or a little wooden stork outside as well." On Reddit, a Nidwalden resident mentioned: "I live in Nidwalden, close to Lucerne and they're so normal here that it's seen as odd when people don't do it. They're called 'Geburtstafeln', so literally 'birth signs'. They are hanged on the balcony when a child is born and they have the name of the child and its birth date written on them." Another Reddit user added: "This is common in Switzerland especially in the German speaking part. They have this and later on the kids keep them." Someone else pointed out former US practices, stating that although this used to be more common stateside, "police recommend against it because it puts your child at risk of abduction." Meanwhile, Welcome Switzerland highlighted the unique cultural practice on Facebook, saying: "In Switzerland, welcoming a newborn means more than just cards and social media posts!". "Families proudly announce the arrival with cute front yard signs, especially in rural areas! Does your country have a unique way to celebrate new arrivals?". According to website Geburtstafeln Schweiz, these signs can be quite expensive, costing between £90 and £120 for one.

Billy Joel says 'I'm not dying' after cancelling tour due to brain condition
The music legend's Murrayfield Stadium gig was due to take place on June 6, but was cancelled along with the rest of Joel's tour due to his health. Billy Joel was forced to cancel his entire 2025 tour, having been diagnosed with a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The star was due to take the stage at Murrayfield Stadium on June 6, a gig which had previously been postponed to give him time to recover from surgery. The 'Uptown Girl' singer has been diagnosed with NPH, which is a condition that causes a build-up of fluid in the brain. The 76-year-old's team shared a statement with fans on May 23, apologising for the cancellation of his tour. It said that his brain condition"has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.' And the singer added: "I am sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience and thank you for understanding.' However, since then the star has been quiet, and was notably absent from the screening of his new documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' last Wednesday, June 4, at Tribeca Film Festival. Despite his absence, he relayed a message to the crowd through the film's co-director, Susan Lacy. 'We know Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey that to you all. "In fact, he said, 'Getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated,'' Lacy told the audience, reported Deadline. He also assured his fans that 'he will be back.' The two founders of Tribeca Film Festival- Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal- also acknowledged Joel's health condition and absence. Rosenthal said: 'Billy wanted to be with us tonight, but as you may have heard, he's dealing with a health issue and had to postpone his performances, including this one tonight. "We know you will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.' De Niro added: 'He's our piano man, a wonderful, integral part of the heartbeat of our city. "Tonight, we get to see the man behind the music and behind the legend. You're in for a real treat.' According to outlet NJ, radio host Howard Stern recently had a conversation with Billy Joel, in which the star urged him to let fans know that he 'is not dying'. During a recent episode of The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM, Stern discussed a recent dinner he had with Joel. Stern said: 'He does have issues. But he said to me- so I'm not saying anything crazy- 'Yeah, you can tell people: I'm not dying.' He wants people to know that. "He's got to deal with some medical stuff. But he was delightful. We had a great time with the wives. Billy's doing okay.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today.
