Dakota Johnson Says the Failure of 'Madame Web ''Wasn't My Fault'

Dakota Johnson is explaining what went wrong with her 2024 superhero movie Madame Web, which was a notable flop at the box office
"I think unfortunately with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point," Johnson said
Johnson, whose latest movie Materialists releases in theaters June 13, was named Worst Performance by the Razzie Awards for her role in Madame WebMore than one year after Dakota Johnson's 2024 superhero movie Madame Web flopped at the box office, the actress is looking back on why the movie didn't work out.
'It wasn't my fault," Johnson, 35, said with a laugh, as she and her Materialists director Celine Song spoke with the Los Angeles Times for an article published Wednesday, June 4. Johnson had been asked whether she was focused on making smaller, indie movies like her new romantic comedy with Song and recent movies like Daddio and Splitsville, which Johnson's company TeaTime Pictures produced.
'There's this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don't have a creative bone in their body," Johnson said of Madame Web. "And it's really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way. And I think unfortunately with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger-budget movies fail all the time."
Johnson starred alongside Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Adam Scott and Emma Roberts in Madame Web, one of Sony Pictures' Spider-Man spinoff movies. The movie follows Johnson's character Cassandra Webb as she gains clairvoyant abilities that allow her to see the future of characters portrayed by Sweeney, O'Connor and Merced. While the film never directly connects to Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies, the characters are closely associated with Spider-Man and Peter Parker in many Marvel comic book stories.
Madame Web received negative reviews from critics and audiences alike and won the 2025 Razzie Awards' awards for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay and Worst Actress for Johnson back in February. Despite all the negative attention the movie received, Johnson did not appear concerned with the long-term impact of Madame Web while speaking with the L.A. Times.
'I don't have a Band-Aid over it,' she said. 'There's no part of me that's like, 'Oh, I'll never do that again' to anything. I've done even tiny movies that didn't do well. Who cares?'

In Materialists, Johnson strays far from superhero fare and instead portrays a New York City matchmaker whose love life becomes caught between two men: an ex named John (Chris Evans) who she reconnects with on the same night she meets a new man named Harry (Pedro Pascal).
'I think a lot of what I read these days is void of soul and heart, and [writer-director Song] is all soul and heart," Johnson told the L.A. Times of the movie, when asked why she has not made more romantic comedies. "I really love a rom-com if it feels like I can connect to the people in it. And I think I've found it hard to connect to the people in some of the ones that I've been offered.'
Materialists is in theaters June 13.

Materialists brings up the age old debate: 10 women on whether they actually care about a man's height

In Materialists, as Lucy (played by Dakota Johnson) sits across from Henry (Pedro Pascal) at an expensive restaurant, she explains to him why he's considered a 'unicorn' — in simple terms, a real, rare catch. What is it about Henry that makes him such an attractive prospect (well, apart from being played by Pascal, of course)? Well, as Lucy goes on to explain, he's handsome, rich, kind — and over 6ft tall. This summer's blockbuster, then, has reignited the age old debate: does men's height really matter in dating? Before we get into the debate, it's worth pointing out — as cheesy as this sounds — that no physical trait matters in dating nearly as much as compatibility, mutual respect, and finding a partner who makes you feel good and treats you well. Plus, despite what western beauty standards would like us to believe, there's no such thing as an ideal physicality. Still, while we all know that looks aren't everything when it comes to finding love, height does appear to be a real sticking point for many women looking to date men — to the extent that some men desperately go to extremes to gain an extra few inches (look up limb stretching, if you dare). A YouGov study from earlier this year found that 55% of women believe single people should be able to filter by height on dating apps (interestingly, 56% of men also agree on this point). Meanwhile, there are numerous research papers which suggest women generally prefer a significant height difference between them and male partners — this is likely down to evolutionary factors, such as taller men being able to protect and provide better than competitors, as well as sociocultural reasons, where we've been socialised into believing being small and petite is the same as being feminine. But in more recent years, being 6ft or taller is being touted as 'the benchmark' for attractive men. A former product manager from Bumble claimed that most women set their lower height limit for men at 6ft, which would wipe out around 85% of men in the UK (the average height of a British man is thought to be 5ft 9). A perfunctory look on TikTok merely confirms preference for especially taller guys; there are 141.9 million posts tagged '6 Foot Guy' (and who could forget last summer, when we were all looking for 6ft 5 man in finance?) Ofc, there are some notable exceptions of famously statuesque women dating men who are shorter than them — Zendaya and Tom Holland, Erin Darke and Daniel Radcliffe, and Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, to name just a few — but do women really want their male partners to measure up to size in the year of 2025? Or is it just a big old myth? Cosmopolitan UK asked 10 women for their thoughts on dating shorter men — and, as expected, the responses are pretty varied. 'My ex was the same height as me, 5ft 7. It didn't bother me at all. I tend to date shorter guys anyway, and I have no idea why. I guess I'm just attracted to them. I loved hugging him because I could put my arms around his shoulders and our bodies just almost became one. Honestly after a while I didn't even notice it anymore' — MissyTX via Reddit 'I am 5ft 7 and my boyfriend is 5ft 5 on a good day. I've never been big on height but, I will admit, on the first date it took some getting used to. We've honestly never even talked about it and I've gotten used to it and don't even think about it anymore." — Jenneapolis via Reddit 'I dated someone who said they were my height (5ft 5), and really the only person who found it an issue was him because he kept making jokes about how short he was and it made me want to cry.' — Katie* 'I'm 5ft 2 and I probably wouldn't want to date someone shorter than me, but that would be very short for a man I guess. I actually didn't really like dating men over 6ft when I was dating because I find standing really close to a really tall person kind of intimidating, and it makes me feel inferior. My ideal height in a partner would probably be around 5ft 10, but it wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me.' — Beth* 'My boyfriend is shorter than me, he's 5ft 9. At the beginning of our relationship it did cause some problems (I walk fast[er than him]; holding hands while walking was kinda awkward when I wore heels), but we've figured all that out rather quickly. He's fantastic and I'm lucky to have him in my life.' — Kotacoette via Reddit 'As a 5ft 9 girlie, I would always date someone taller than me. It's mainly because of my own body insecurities that I'd want my partner to be taller, but that doesn't mean they have to be 6ft 4 — just at least an inch or two taller than me. Also think it's very selfish when super short girls date super tall guys, save some for the rest of us' — Marianne* 'Being short is an absolute deal breaker. I dated a guy that was 5ft 5, and he had short man syndrome. Never again. I'm tall and felt like a giant too.' — Send_Me_An_Angel via Reddit 'I've dated across the height spectrum and think it's all about confidence/how you wear that height. If a man can own his height, whatever it is, then that's attractive. Kendrick Lamar is 5ft 6, and could you imagine him turning up to a date and being like, 'Omg sorry I'm so short, hate my life'? Also I literally threw my neck out a couple of months ago kissing my boyfriend — who is 6ft 2 — goodbye, and literally needed physio. Sometimes there's a thing as too tall' — Jenni 'I'm 5ft 3, so I've never cared about height. My husband happens to be 6ft 3 though, but I didn't actively care whether I was with someone over 6ft… I promise!' — Clare* 'Dear Short Kings, I simply could not. I'm 5ft7 — not exactly giraffe-level, but not a height which screams damsel in distress either. If I dated someone shorter, I'd feel like a Viking Shieldmaiden preparing for battle, not a dainty delicate flower from an Austen novel. I strictly swipe right on 6ft over.' — Marie* So, there you have it. Just like with any trait in dating, some women care about height and others don't. Perhaps fitness blogger Zanna van Dijk summarises the issue best. Taking to Instagram in June this year, she wrote: 'I'm 6ft 2, my husband is shorter than me, and we met on a dating app. When I was younger, society told me that I had to date men taller than me. So if the height filter had existed back then, we probably wouldn't have matched. And that blows my mind. Because this relationship has taught me height doesn't dictate compatibility. It doesn't make someone kind. Or funny. Or supportive. Or a great life partner.' And of course, this is the point at the very heart of Materialists. The film suggests that the 'Tinderfied' nature of dating, which prioritises superficial qualities such as wealth and looks — for any gender — shouldn't supersede genuine, authentic connections. Regardless of whatever we consider our 'type' to be, it's always important to remain open-minded; the rigidity of searching for a certain type of person — seeing them not as a whole person, but as a list of attributes — may see us lose out on finding a truly happy relationship. Besides, when it comes to height, it really doesn't matter — we're all the same height lying down, after all. *Names have been changed Kimberley Bond is a Multiplatform Writer for Harper's Bazaar, focusing on the arts, culture, careers and lifestyle. Kristin Davis and Shawn Johnson East Join the World's Cutest Rescue Dog Contest as Celebrity Judges

The adorable rescue dogs of the world have some A-list celebrity fans. Kristin Davis and Shawn Johnson have joined the 2025 PEOPLE's World's Cutest Rescue Dog Contest Presented by the PEDIGREE® brand as celebrity judges. The And Just Like That... star and Olympic gold medalist's decision to join the annual canine competition comes right before the launch of the contest's voting phase. "So excited to be a judge for this year's contest! Animal adoption means so much to our family. We recently brought home our second golden retriever, Oakley, to join Nash, and now we can't imagine life without him!" Johnson shared about participating in the 2025 contest. On Aug. 14, the contest's ten furry finalists will be announced, and voting will begin. From Aug. 14 through Sept. 15, the general public can vote for the dog they think deserves the cutest crown once a day at The three pups with the most votes at the end of the voting period will move on to the judging round, where Davis, Johnson, editors for PEOPLE, and members of the PEDIGREE® brand will determine the grand prize winner. The precious pooch chosen by the judges will receive a PEOPLE feature —both in the magazine and on — a custom photo shoot, a year's supply of dog food from the PEDIGREE® brand, and a $1,000 donation to the pet rescue organization of the winner's choice. Last year, the cutest champ was Margot, a pit bull and American bulldog mix with different-colored eyes and a deep devotion to her owner. As lifelong animal enthusiasts, Davis and Johnson are ideal judges for the 2025 PEOPLE's World's Cutest Rescue Dog Contest Presented by the PEDIGREE® brand. In November 2024, Davis shared that she adopted a dog named Chewy from Muddy Paws Rescue in New York City. While some say Chewy is the fortunate one for landing a famous family, Davis insisted, "My kids and I are the lucky ones to have Chewy in our lives," at the time of the pup's adoption. "It is so important to adopt rescued animals. Through circumstances beyond their control, many are ending up in jeopardy of being euthanized. No matter where you live, there are pets in need of adoption and rescue organizations that need support," she shared in a statement to PEOPLE shortly after Chewy's adoption. The Sex and the City star is also a patron of The Orphans' Project at The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. The Orphans' Project's mission is "rescuing orphan elephants, rhinos, and other species, raising them with specialist care, and reintegrating them into a protected wilderness," according to the organization's website. In March 2025, the former gymnast and her husband, Andrew East, adopted a 9-month-old golden retriever puppy named Oakley from Wags & Walks in Nashville. "We chose adoption because we knew our family wasn't complete — and we felt called to give a pup like Oakley a forever home. He's already filled our house with so much love, and the kids are OBSESSED. It truly feels like he was meant to be here," Johnson said in a statement to PEOPLE at the time. Chiefs players ‘teased' Travis Kelce in locker room for 2016 dating show, Derrick Johnson says

There was a time when Travis Kelce's dating life was the subject of entertainment media, even without Taylor Swift. In 2016, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end had his own dating show, 'Catching Kelce,' on which he tried out dating 50 women, one from each state, in an attempt to find a girlfriend. Advertisement The show lasted one season. Kelce's former teammate, Chiefs all-time tackle leader Derrick Johnson, told Fox News Digital how the locker room reacted to Kelce's dating show. 'He tried not to [talk about the show in the locker room] but we kind of teased him at times, because when you're playing for Andy Reid, there's no distractions. You got to do your job and do it at a high level. So we were aware of the show in the locker room. We'd throw different stuff out there. But when it came to football, it was all business,' Johnson said. Kelce turned 27 in October 2016 when the show aired, overlapping with that year's NFL season. Advertisement The tight end was in the midst of his first 1,000-yard receiving season and second-of-10-straight Pro Bowl seasons. And while the teasing for the show came in the locker room, Johnson says the team's veterans also respected the younger Kelce's abilities when it came to dating. 'He had that taken care of. Good or bad, that's the area that he needs no help in,' Johnson said. 5 Travis Kelce led the dating show 'Catching Kelce' in 2016. YouTube/E! Advertisement 5 The NFL star's dating show only lasted one season. E! 5 Kelce did not date the winner of his show for a long time. E! The show's first and only season ended with Kelce choosing a contestant from Kentucky, Maya Benberry, as his girlfriend. However, by 2017, Kelce was reported to have begun dating his next girlfriend, model Kayla Nicole. Advertisement Kelce and Nicole reportedly dated for five years up until May 2022. Once Kelce began his relationship with Swift in 2023, Johnson took notice. 5 Kelce was 'teased' about his dating show in the locker room, according to Chiefs all-time tackle leader Derrick Johnson. Fox News 5 Kelce started dating Taylor Swift in 2023. AP 'He outkicked his coverage. Taylor's big time,' Johnson said. 'Kelce's big time as well, football-wise, but she is globally. So they're definitely a power couple.' Johnson left the Chiefs for the rival Raiders for his final season in 2018, but his lasting influence preceded the team's historic dynasty and three Super Bowl wins, with five total trips to the big game, from 2019 to February 2024. Johnson was famously a team leader on defense in the early years of Kelce's career. 'None of us knew who he could really be. He probably didn't know it at all either. And once he got going after his second year, third year, I was like, 'This guy is the man!'' Johnson said.
