Man jailed for 15 years after beating his granddad to death in rampage
A man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for beating his own grandfather with dementia to death in an alcohol-fuelled rampage.
Jakob Walpole already had a restraining order, which was supposed to stop him from visiting his 'vulnerable and elderly' grandfather, John Brown, when he launched the attack on November 23 of last year.
Just 11 days before the fatal attack, Walpole, 33, arrived drunk at his grandparents' house in Bulkington, near Coventry, banging on the windows and threatening to kill his 81-year-old grandfather.
The family had concerns about Walpole's behaviour, which had been deteriorating since the coronavirus pandemic, and security cameras had already been installed at his grandparents' home.
Despite John's dementia diagnosis and his offers to help, Walpole brutally attacked his own grandfather while demanding money.
John, a well-known Jaguar car expert, was left with significant facial injuries and bleeding on the brain after the attack. He died in the hospital five days later.
Callously, Walpole then left his grandfather seriously injured and instead went to Bulkington Working Men's Club, where he bragged about what he'd done.
He attacked two other people after being asked to calm down, smashing a glass over a customer's head before assaulting a bar worker as he was physically removed from the pub.
After a trial, Walpole was found guilty of manslaughter, assault by beating, breaching a restraining order, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was found not guilty of murder.
He has since returned to Warwick Crown Court, where he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Speaking when Walpole was found guilty, Natalie Kelly from the Crown Prosecution Service said: 'Jakob Walpole carried out a senseless and brutal attack on his own grandfather, who had tried to help him. He showed no concern or remorse following the attack.
'Rather than call for help, he callously left his vulnerable and elderly grandfather severely injured and went to a local pub where he assaulted two further elderly victims.
'Everyone who knew Mr Brown saw how much he did for his grandson, often going out of his way to care and support him – but Walpole simply took advantage of his kindness.
'We were able to prove this case using comprehensive evidence, including CCTV footage, mobile phone evidence and messages which clearly demonstrated Walpole's violent intentions and actions.
'While this conviction ensures Walpole is held accountable for his actions, the family have been left with a deep and lasting pain that no justice can erase.'
John's loved ones paid tribute to him, calling him a 'pillar of the community'.
Detective Inspector Gareth Unett of Warwickshire Police said: 'John Brown was a kind, gentle, hardworking man whose loss has left a huge void in the lives of his loved ones and friends.
'Not only was he loved greatly by all those around him, but he was also known internationally as one of the best restorers of classic Jaguars.
'The legacy he leaves is not only in the love and generosity he showed to those around him, but also in the countless classic cars that will survive for generations more thanks to his work. More Trending
'Walpole's attack on his grandfather, who had shown him nothing but kindness and generosity, was an act of cowardice and brutality that, in decades of policing, I struggle to find a comparison for.
'His later attack in the working men's club only serves as further confirmation that Walpole is a danger to decent, peaceful, law-abiding people.
'Our thoughts remain with Mr Brown's family, in what is a terribly sad case. They have shown dignity and respect in the most challenging of circumstances.'

Cancel your weekend plans to binge Sheridan Smith's 'outstanding' Netflix drama
It looks like Netflix subscribers are discovering a Sheridan Smith crime drama that first aired on ITV in 2012. Mrs Biggs is climbing up the streamer's ranking of the platform's top 10 TV shows – making a convincing argument for a mid-August weekend watch. Smith – who has so many British dramas to her name it can be easy to let one slip – stars in this five-part drama, which is based on the true story of the Great Train Robbery. The drama focuses on the relationship between Charmian, played by Smith, and Ronnie Biggs, played by Daniel Mays. It follows everything from their first lovestruck meeting and the fateful 1963 train heist, to its aftermath and their eventual divorce in 1976, after Biggs fathered a child in Brazil. We see the petty crook meet his soon-to-be wife on, of all places, a train. 'The future is full of possibilities,' he tells her. 'The past will only drag you down.' With that, the Biggs couple set off on a crime spree before they eventually decide to settle down for a quiet married life. That is, until the 'one last job' pops up in the chance to join the train robbers. Biggs's former wife Charmian was also a consultant on the show. The show's writer and executive producer Jeff Pope said he wanted to set out a romantic tale, rather than a romanticised one. 'We show Ron as perhaps a little too wilfully optimistic and Charmian is the cold voice of reason throughout. It absolutely would be a danger of a piece like this to romanticise it,' he told The Guardian. 'It will get laughed out of court if it's a slushfest. In the first episode, they steal, he strikes her, we acknowledge the fact he had a criminal record; further down the line, Charmian has an abortion by another man. We don't pull back, we don't flinch.' Praised at the time of its release for the quality of the acting and the excitement of the episodes, TV viewers have shared their positive reception over the years, as Mrs Biggs has been available on ITVX as well as Netflix. Ricky Jones, 58, was accused of encouraging violent disorder after footage emerged showing him speaking to a crowd at a protest in east London last year in the wake of the Southport murders and rioting. Jones described the protesters as 'disgusting Nazi fascists' at the counter-protest held in Walthamstow on August 7 last year. He said on the video, describing the far-right protesters who had marched outside the Walthamstow Forest Immigration Bureau: 'They are disgusting Nazi fascists. We need to cut all their throats and get rid of them all.' He used his finger to cut across his throat as he addressed the crowd. The now-suspended councillor was at trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court today. After deliberating for just half an hour, the jurors found him not guilty. Jones, a borough councillor in Dartford, Kent, was suspended from the Labour Party the next day. The court was shown a video where he also told the crowds at the protest: 'You've got women and children using these trains during the summer holidays. 'They don't give a shit about who they hurt.' Hollyoaks confirms Sienna Blake goes to the police as killer Jez closes in
This is the moment Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) is cornered by Jez (Jeremy Sheffield) in Hollyoaks next week as she plans to report her villainous dad's antics to Dodger Savage (Danny Mac). Jez, as audiences know, has claimed the lives of various villagers since his arrival in the show, namely Dilly Harcourt (Emma Johnsey-Smith), Abe Fielding (Tyler Conti) and Bobby Costello (Zak Sutcliffe). He's also murdered therapist Tommy Odenkirk (Brandon Fellows), pinning the blame for that one on Joel Dexter (Rory Douglas-Speed), and social worker Ian Stone, framing Bobby for the latter. Sienna had some knowledge of her devilish dad's wrongdoings when she discovered that he murdered her beloved cousin Dilly, who was planning on reporting Sienna to the police for her role in husband Ethan Williams' (Matthew James Bailey) demise. The realisation that her supposedly kind father was responsible for the murder of Dilly left Sienna shaken to the core but in the heat of the moment she assisted Jez in getting rid of her body, burying her in the allotment. Jez vowed that he would turn over a new leaf and Sienna believed him but when she found out that the patriarch was engaged to her sister Liberty (Jessamy Stoddart), the fear of what he's truly capable of started to creep back in. With Dilly already dead at the time of Ian's demise, Sienna put two and two together and her worst fears were realised upon a trip to the allotment, where she discovered that not only was Jez still claiming lives but that he was doing so because he believes it's what he was 'born to do'. Who will take down Jez? Horrified and appalled, Sienna raced to tell her loved ones about Jez's true nature, but the killer caught up to her, resulting in the pair of them taking a tumble from the city walls. Jez recovered in hospital and instructed mum Martha (Sherrie Hewson) to 'take care' of Sienna so to speak, knowing she will expose his horrid secrets. Subsequent scenes confirmed that not only is Sienna still aware of Jez's murderous antics but she's also keeping a list – and she intends to do whatever it takes to take him down. Next week, Sienna heads to a chatroom online for advice on what to do if your dad is a serial killer and, to further protect her loved ones and bide her time while she contemplates her next move, she tells Jez and Lib that it's unlikely she'll ever regain her memory. Liberty, however, grows concerned that Sienna is keeping something from her. Will she get to the bottom of such a thing? The jury is still out but there's soon concern when Sienna starts to behave in a peculiar manner, selling the stall and all of her stock, which leaves Liberty confused. Afterwards, Sienna makes a beeline for the police station, hoping to speak to Dodger about what she knows, but to her horror, Jez appears before her very eyes, as seen in new images shared exclusively with Metro. An emotional showdown ensues, with Sienna left in tears. The question is: will Sienna be able to cover her tracks in a swift fashion? Or is Jez aware that she recalls the truth about his murders?
