Drugs worth around Rs 350 cr seized in Mizoram, 1 arrested

Aizawl, Aug 3 (PTI) In one of the biggest drug hauls in Mizoram, the state police have seized crystal methamphetamine and heroin worth around Rs 350 crore and arrested one person, a senior officer said on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team comprising personnel of the Criminal Investigation Department (Special Branch) and the Special Narcotic police station in Aizawl conducted an operation near the state capital on August 1.
The joint team intercepted an Aizawl-bound pickup truck, which was carrying Mithun, at a stretch between Zemabawk and Seling areas, the police officer said.
During a thorough search of the vehicle, the team seized 20.304 kg of crystal meth worth around Rs 300 crore and 1.652 kg of heroin concealed in 128 soap cases worth Rs 49.56 lakh from a hidden compartment, the officer said.
The vehicle's driver, identified as B Lalthazuala (45), a resident of Aizawl's Republic Mual Veng, has been arrested for transporting drugs, he said.
The accused has been booked under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, he said.

4,000+ motorists speeding on Coastal Rd challaned this year
Mumbai: More than 4,000 motorists were challaned by Mumbai traffic police for speeding on the Coastal Road so far this year, with fines issued running up to Rs 82 lakh. Around 1,500 challans have been cleared and Rs 31 lakh in fines paid by offenders so far, the police said. Additionally, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) challaned another 596 motorists for crossing speed limits, including several high-end vehicles such as BMW, Mercedes and Audi. The vehicle captures speed and generates challans. Traffic police also set up a similar interceptor vehicle earlier this year. "On the south-bound arm of the Coastal Road at Worli and on the north-bound arm near the tunnel, electronic displays have also been put up that show the speed of vehicles passing in the lane beneath. Seven speed cameras are being set up for automatic generation of challans," said a police official. Land fraud racket: 5 arrested with Rs 32L cash, 5 vehicles
1 2 Mohali: Mohali police have dismantled a land fraud syndicate, arresting five key members and seizing Rs 32.5 lakh in cash along with five vehicles used in the scam. Two other accused remain at large, with police hot on their trail. The arrested individuals were Avtar Singh alias Bahadur Singh (Dayalpur village, now in Sante Majra Colony, Kharar), Jagdish Kumar alias Jeet Singh (Kalahehri village, Ropar), Jagtar Singh alias Satnam Singh (Badeshah Kalan, Fatehgarh Sahib; now in Sunder Nagar, Morinda), Bhupesh Mehta (Morinda), Gurbaj Singh alias Gurbhej Singh (Paprali village, Ropar). Still absconding are Manga Singh and Kulwinder Singh alias Kali, both from Luhar Majra Kalan village in Fatehgarh Sahib. Police confirmed that Kulwinder Singh alias Kali has multiple cases already registered against him. Investigators believe the arrests will expose a wider network of land scams in the region.

Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrests man with 2 kg ambergris
The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police on Wednesday arrested a man and seized 2 kg ambergris worth around Rs 2 crore from him. The arrested man has been identified as Raju alias Rajesh Punamchand Marwadi, 43, resident of Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad City and originally from Bikaner in Rajasthan. The arrest was made during a raid conducted by police at Meghaninagar in Ahmedabad based on a tip-off. Police said they are on the look out for two persons, Ganesh Bachhraj Marwadi of Mumbai, who allegedly provided the ambergris to Marwadi.
