UAE and Italy Forge Investment Ties in AI, Healthcare, and Minerals
The UAE Ministry of Investment has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Italy to strengthen investment cooperation in pharmaceuticals, minerals, data centers, and artificial intelligence (AI). These agreements aim to drive innovation, enhance technology integration, and facilitate knowledge transfer across key industries, reinforcing the long-standing economic ties between the two nations.
The MoUs were signed by Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, UAE Minister of Investment, and Adolfo Urso, Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy. They build on the UAE-Italy Economic, Industrial, Technological, and Financial Cooperation Agreement (1984) and the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (1995), further advancing bilateral relations.
Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi highlighted the importance of these agreements in strengthening economic collaboration and fostering sustainable growth. He emphasized that these partnerships will accelerate progress in healthcare, energy transition, and digital transformation, supporting innovation-driven economic diversification. Adolfo Urso underscored the strategic significance of these MoUs in enhancing cooperation between Italy and the UAE, creating new opportunities in pharmaceuticals, mineral development, and AI-driven digital infrastructure.
The MoU on pharmaceutical investments will focus on healthcare, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals, with both nations collaborating on vaccine production, regulatory policy development, and R&D in critical medical areas such as oncology, cardiovascular diseases, and rare diseases. AI-driven research, automation in manufacturing, and strategic alliances with leading pharmaceutical companies will also be explored.
In the minerals sector, a five-year MoU will promote sustainable mining, mineral exploration, processing, and recycling. The agreement encourages investment opportunities, workforce development, and responsible mineral sector governance, leveraging government support to connect businesses and expand economic partnerships.
The digital infrastructure MoU focuses on advancing AI and data center investments, including the development of green data centers with a future capacity target of up to 2GW. The partnership will also explore 'Virtual Data Embassies' to ensure secure digital continuity and cross-border data resilience. Companies such as MGX, G42, Khazna, and ENI will play a crucial role in expanding AI capabilities, attracting global cloud service providers, and enhancing digital education through scholarships and expert exchange programs.
Beyond Italy, the UAE is also strengthening global AI collaborations, including a recent AI-focused partnership with France. These strategic initiatives reflect the UAE's commitment to leading in AI innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable economic development.
The UAE and Italy have seen growing trade relations, with non-oil trade surging over the past decade. Italian exports to the UAE reached $7.22 billion in 2023, increasing by 22% in early 2024. UAE exports to Italy totaled $1.57 billion, while more than 600 Italian companies currently operate in the UAE. These MoUs will further enhance economic growth, support technological advancements, and solidify UAE-Italy trade and investment relations for the future.

As the third child of Egyptian parents, Hamed Sayed Hamed and Eman Mohamed, his arrival marked a joyful start to Eid. 'We are happy and blessed to have this baby arrive to us on Eid,' said Ms Mohamed, who is recovering in the hospital. The hospital's executive director, Dr Raza Siddiqui, congratulated the family, as well as all parents welcoming newborns in the UAE. "It is always special to welcome new life, but babies born on Eid Al Adha carry an added blessing,' he said. 'We at RAK Hospital feel privileged to be part of such joyous moments and congratulate all families celebrating this double delight." At NMC Royal Hospital in Abu Dhabi, Jordanian citizen Rehaf Mohamed Mansour gave birth to her first child, a daughter called Sila, who was delivered at 1.39am on Friday. 'I am very happy to have my Eid gift as my angel,' said Ms Mansour, who thanked hospital staff for their efforts. At Aster Hospital Al Qusais, Mansoor Ali and Haneena Saithammarakathu Lanchira Purayil celebrated the arrival of their son at 4.39am. 'We extend our deepest gratitude to the incredible doctors and medical team at Aster Hospital Al Qusais for their exceptional care and support. This is a truly blessed and memorable start to our journey as parents.' New support system Meanwhile, as part of an initiative to mark Eid, thousands of children in Dubai are to benefit from a fund to support those most in need. About 10,000 children are in line to receive support from the Eidiya programme introduced by the Community Development Authority, in collaboration with the Endowments and Minors' Trust Foundation (Awqaf Dubai). The fund will be used to aid the social development of children who are most in need of financial support, including orphans. 'The Eidiya is not just financial support, it's a heartfelt message meant to bring joy to children during these blessed days and to make them feel valued and cared for,' said Hessa Buhumaid, director general of the authority. 'Giving Eidiya is a cherished tradition in our culture and the happiness it brings to children is truly priceless. We aim to make the most of religious, national and social occasions to highlight the value of each individual in society. 'Children, as the heart of the family and the foundation of the future, deserve our full attention and support. Caring for their daily well-being helps build their confidence in themselves and in their community.'

Pakistan govt begins cancelling passports of deportees

Pakistan's government has initiated cancelling the passports of deportees due to fake documents and beggary to discourage such practices. Data released by the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development showed that over 7,800 Pakistanis were deported from 2019 to 2025 for different charges, including beggary. All of these deportees' passports are being cancelled, the Pakistani media reported. Most of these deportees are from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which house a higher number of South Asian diaspora. As reported by Khaleej Times last month, the South Asian government stated that all deportees' passports will be cancelled upon arrival in the country and a first information report (FIR) will be filed against them for illegal practices. In addition, the government also announced that the deportees will be placed on the passport control list, ensuring that they don't travel abroad for five years. The Ministry of Interior has started placing these deportees' names on the passport control list to ensure that they don't travel abroad. The Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resources earlier this week discussed the matter of deportees and discussed steps taken to prevent such incidents. Millions of skilled Pakistani workers are employed in various countries, contributing immensely to the country's foreign exchange reserves. More than 5.5 million Pakistanis live and work in the UAE and other neighbouring Gulf countries. Millions of South Asian nationals visit Dubai, UAE and other regional countries for tourism. Pakistanis in the UAE have welcomed the government's decision to cancel the passports of deportees and put them on the passport control list for illegal practices because these initiatives will ease travel and visa restrictions for genuine visitors. The Senate Standing Committee recommended that the ministry initiate criminal proceedings against agencies for their involvement in sending deportees abroad. However, the question of legality of cancelling passports for crimes committed in foreign countries was also raised by a senator during the meeting.
