Only states adopting Act 672 receive federal funds for waste management
Only six states and two Federal Territories that adopted the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672) receive federal funding.
Under Budget 2025, RM1.54 billion has been allocated for waste management in Perlis, Kedah, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya.
Other states must manage waste independently through their local authorities and agencies.
Deputy Minister Aiman Athirah Al-Jundi stated this in response to Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan's query in the Dewan Rakyat.
Act 672 allows the Federal government to take action against illegal dumping in participating regions.
SWCorp conducted 3,036 operations against illegal dumpsites in 2024, with 2,030 more up to June this year.
KPKT stressed that cleanliness efforts require collaboration among state governments, agencies, and the public.

Be fair to tax-paying Malaysians, Dr Wee tells DAP on public university enrolment issue
PETALING JAYA: Is it fair for tax-paying Malaysians, whose children aspire to enter public universities, to be denied opportunities due to those institutions' commercialisation measures, asked MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. Challenging DAP to base their arguments on facts instead of rhetoric, Dr Wee noted that his remarks in Dewan Rakyat were grounded in actual sentiment and concern over the management of public universities. "It's about educational opportunities for all Malaysians... while public universities expand revenue-generating international intakes through non-transparent mechanisms and commercialise admissions via the open channel," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 8). He said, resulting in extremely high tuition fees, ranging from RM400,000 to RM500,000, compared to RM15,000 to RM200,000 through the centralised admission system (UPUOnline) for a five-year MBBS course. Lee had claimed that across the 20 public universities, the total number of Chinese nationals studying undergraduate programmes was 7,930, while Malaysian undergraduates of Chinese descent were no less than 41,176. Lee, however, did not state the source of these figures. "Do we want to provide more space for Malaysians in our public universities? Absolutely. Are 41,176 Malaysian Chinese undergraduates enough? Certainly not. "It will never be enough until the day we achieve universal and free public higher education – and we are still a long way from having that fiscal capacity," he said in a statement. Lee also wanted Dr Wee to apologise in Parliament for "lying" about mainland Chinese students outnumbering locals in our public universities. On Wednesday, Dr Wee reiterated his concerns about the sharp rise in the percentage of foreign student enrolment at Malaysia's public universities that is outpacing that of local students, raising red flags about the allocation of placements. Citing a recent study by the Institute of Strategic Analysis and Policy Research (Insap), he said the number of Malaysian students enrolling in public universities increased modestly from 172,719 in 2018 to 191,450 in 2024, reflecting a 10.8% rise and a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of merely 1.73%. In stark contrast, non-Malaysian enrolment surged from 10,003 in 2018 to 19,731 in 2024, marking a 97.3% increase and a CAGR of 11.99%. While not against the intake of international students, Dr Wee said it becomes an issue when their enrolment seems to be replacing spots meant for Malaysian students. 'We must ensure a balance that respects the educational needs of our own creme de la creme," he said. Civil society group G25 also stated their concerns about the increasing commercialisation of public services under the guise of "financial sustainability." They highlighted the trend of prioritising direct intakes in public universities and the privatisation of healthcare, warning that such practices could exacerbate socio-economic divides. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir had also recently responded to Dr Wee, stating that the government continues to prioritise Malaysians, with no compromise on the quotas allocated for local students in public universities. MCA then urged Zambry to make known admissions data for public universities, adding that the intake of foreign students must not come at the expense of local students. Zambry's insistence that international students were not displacing locals was insufficient to allay concerns without clear, transparent figures, said party vice-president Datuk Tan Teik Cheng.

It's getting awkward as Awesome TV sues comedian trio over unpaid debts claim
IT gets messy after Awesome TV has responded to claims by three well-known comedians over unpaid appearance fees by suing them for defamation. In a media statement, the TV station claimed that monies owing to Amirullah Azmi who is better known as Amir Raja Lawak, Ikhtiarudin Naina Mohamad (Mamak Puteh) and Abu Musarrif Abu Bakar (Abu Mamu) were the responsibility of external production houses. To further compound matters, the issue was highlighted in the Dewan Rakyat by Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid who demanded greater protection for the creative industry. The DAP legislator argued that artistes were still being forced to plead for what should be rightfully theirs. On this note, Awesome TV has slammed the former Penang Island City councillor for making unverified remarks in the Parliament which cast the broadcaster in a bad light. Adding to the human drama, Amirullah is said to be seeking RM18,000 in overdue payments to fund his father's cancer treatment. Editor's Note: Awesome TV had previously been embroiled in negative publicity for its news reportage during the 15th General Election (GE15). Its reportage had come under fire as racist when it urged Malay voters to turn out at polls to avoid the Chinese from being kingmakers. It was not the only time Awesome TV has been in the firing line as its news reports also seemed designed to stoke racial tensions by highlighting economic disparity between ethnic communities. That the Awesome TV's retaliatory media statement which was shared on Facebook forum Meanwhile in Malaysia (MIM) has garnered 3.4K likes, 1.1K comments and 235 shares at the time of writing is an indication that this spat had captured the public's attention. For starters, Meanwhile in Malaysia's admin had kindly translated the media statement from Bahasa Malaysia to what can be roughly said to be a rojak mix of Hokkien and Manglish (Malaysian colloquial English) which elicited much hilarity from readers. One commenter queried why wasn't there a suit for defamation when the matter went viral a few months back. Why wait till it was highlighted in the Dewan Rakyat before taking legal action? The lack of details led to much conjecture with one commenter wondering if it was case of Awesome TV not paying the production houses who then failed to reimburse the artistes. The lack of clarity is also reflected in commenters' reactions. One insinuated the suit was a means to avoid paying the debt. However, other commenters took the view that the payments were NOT Awesome TV's problem. It was for the external production houses to settle those dues. Some suggested there was more than meets the eye. If indeed the payments were the purview of external production houses, why delay in declaring this piece of information? The delay in responding was also highlighted. Why the long delay? That this whole unsavoury episode has tarnished Awesome TV's reputation is undisputed, judging from some of the comments. Wouldn't it have been better to sit down and trash out the issue without involving lawyers and MPs? But then again, it probably got messy because a compromise or agreement could not be reached.
