Coimbatore: The Association of University Teachers (AUT) on Friday staged a protest against the state govt for its failure to implement the old pension scheme for the staff as mentioned in the 2021 election manifesto.
Raising slogans against the DMK govt, the protesters also presented various demands for the teaching staff at the aided colleges.
"The new pension scheme does not offer any benefits, especially for those families solely dependent on govt employment. Considering the livelihood, the govt should cancel the new pension scheme and implement the old pension scheme," said one of the association members.
Pointing out that the govt had been holding back the arrears of the teaching staff at the aided colleges, the AUT members urged the state to release the same at the earliest.
"The staff are deprived of promotion just because of the govt's failure to implement the Career Advancement Scheme. The govt should consider implementation of the CAS for the 60 teachers who joined Bharathiar University in 2016," another AUT member said.
The protestors said the govt had also not released the arrears of those staff who were promoted with monetary benefits in the aided arts and science colleges and urged the state to disburse the same without any delay. Pointing to the unfilled vacancies, they said it had raised questions about the quality of education being imparted at the aided colleges.

BJP taking credit for Bengaluru Metro project, says minister Ramalinga Reddy

Bengaluru: Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy has accused the BJP of claiming credit for Namma Metro projects. Addressing mediapersons Saturday, a day before the Yellow Line inauguration, Reddy alleged BJP state president BY Vijayendra and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, among others, have taken credit for all Metro projects. The minister said the state govt is not a minor partner in Metro projects but a major stakeholder. "In Phase 1, Karnataka govt contributed 30% (including land); central govt share was 25% and the remaining was borrowed by BMRCL. In Phase 2, Karnataka contributed 30% plus land and most of the cost overruns, while the central govt contributed only 20%. The remaining 50% was borrowed. For Phase 3, Karnataka provided 20% funding, land and resettlement costs; central govt provided 20% and the remaining 60% was borrowed," he said. "Metro project belongs to the people, and is not the property of any political party. BJP functionaries are more interested in publicity than work, claiming credit for others' efforts," Reddy said. Country needs 22 lakh drivers, tribals must eye it: Gadkari

Nagpur: The country needs 22 lakh vehicle drivers. Recognising this as the biggest employment opportunity, vehicle driver training centres should be started. The tribal community should take initiative in this and train their people, said Union transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari. He was speaking at the Virangana Rani Durgawati Women Empowerment Conference organised by the tribal development department of Maharashtra govt at Suresh Bhat Auditorium. Tribal development minister Ashok Uike, finance minister Ashish Jaiswal, Union minister of state Durgadas Uike, TDD secretary Vijay Waghmare, MPs Shyamkumar Barve and Faggan Singh Kulaste, former mayor Maya Iwnate, deputy commissioner Digambar Chavan, All India Tribal Development Council general secretary Dinesh Sheram and others were present. "Today Maharashtra has 30 and the country has 250 driver training centres. These centres are insufficient for producing drivers," said Gadkari. "Even e-rickshaws are important means of employment generation. E-rickshaws have eliminated the old rickshaw system where humans pulled other humans. This has liberated one crore people. Today they are earning their livelihood with dignity by driving e-rickshaws. Through pink e-rickshaws, employment has been made available to women, said Gadkari, advising to purchase good quality e-rickshaws. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Understand Your Cat Better - 15+ Cat Behaviors Explained Undo Gadkari urged deprived sections to pursue education for self-reliance, citing initiatives like Warli painting and Gondi saree designs and mehendi training for 650 women.
