I graduated from Stanford a few months ago but can't land a job. I'm working 3 part-time gigs and struggling with shame.

Business Insider12 hours ago
Last December, I graduated from Stanford University with my bachelor's and master's in English. Now, over 100 job applications later, I'm working three part-time jobs, living in one of the most expensive areas in the US, and constantly doubting where I should go and what I should do.
Three months before graduation, I started the grueling application process. I applied for project management, marketing, UX, and writing roles. I even applied to entry-level roles and postitons in Big Tech.
I personalized nearly all my résumés, wrote cover letters (mostly) without ChatGPT, conducted company research, and prepared hours for the few I got.
But nothing worked, and I'm still trying to figure out my next steps as a recent graduate.
I've struggled to find a job that will sponsor my work visa
One complicating factor in the job search has been my international status. I'm in the US on a student visa extension — known as Optional Practical Training — which means I could legally work in the US for one year without needing work visa sponsorship. However, I would need to find a job within 60 days after my OPT starts.
Two months postgrad, I was starting to panic. The 60-day unemployment on my OPT was ticking, and I was scared that I'd be sent home.
One day, complaining about all this to a friend and asking how their job was going, they showed me their company, an AI startup's, website. I took a good look and said, "I could write copy better than this." And that was my pitch to the CEO. A week and two rounds of interviews later, I was hired as their first marketing intern.
The three months at my first job passed like a blur. I was thrown into the world of tech, AI, B2B, CRM, and other increasingly frustrating acronyms. It was difficult, confusing.
Throughout my internship, I still applied for other roles. Despite my manager's many verbal promises, I knew the startup wouldn't be able to hire me full-time. I was proven right.
That meant back to the job search, back to the ticking clock
After I left that internship, I gathered myself up, gave myself one day to cry, and started the cycle all over again. I subscribed to at least a dozen job boards, followed Gen Z career influencers on LinkedIn, and reached out to senior tech writers for advice and consolation, repeating their words in my mind: "The economy is bad. This is not your fault."
One piece of advice from a career blog stuck with me: to create, write, and document in public. So, I started a TikTok account. I branded myself a "non-techie in tech." I shared my job search journey publicly. I also started posting on LinkedIn, where one post about my difficulty with the job search received a little virality.
Now, my three part-time jobs are barely enough to keep me afloat, even though they allow me to maintain my legal status in the US, for now. I capitalized on my admission to Stanford, helping students with their college essays as a freelancer. I use my English degree to be an essay editor for an EdTech company. I also help out an AI startup as a copywriter.
The job search is taking its toll on me
Throughout these six months, through various phases of unemployment and semi-employment, I've experienced a range of emotions: sudden bursts of motivation and drive, excitement about a position, but always ending with disheartenment after each job rejection, each "Thank you for your time."
The hardest part of all this is telling my family, who worry constantly and ask what I would do next. I try my best to keep up a front, telling them the little successes, but they never know the true extent of my tiredness, of this quiet shame.
What had these past eight years in the US been all for? I've asked myself again and again. What use are these degrees if I couldn't even get a full-time position that doesn't involve me being in debt?
I joke about unemployment on Twitter, on TikTok, and commiserate with my fellow Stanford grads in similar predicaments. But as my outrageously high rent eats into my savings, as my health insurance expired, I grow more anxious and depressed with every passing day.
I've stopped applying for jobs for a month now. I feel like I should start again, as I only had six months left before I would need a company to sponsor my work visa, but I just can't bring myself to it.
Amid the stress of money and immigration, I had forgotten why I had spent four years working toward two, seemingly useless, English degrees: and that was to read critically, to write with care, and above all, to create, to tell stories, to find community. I'm trying to practice that love for stories again, even during these times.

Meta to report Q2 earnings amid AI investment push

Facebook parent Meta (META) will report its second quarter earnings on Wednesday, as the company continues its AI spending and hiring spree. On Friday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced former OpenAI ( researcher Shengjia Zhao, who helped develop the company's ChatGPT model, has been named founder and chief scientist of Meta's Superintelligence Lab. Prior to Zhao, Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI ( and hired its CEO, Alexandr Wang. The company also hired former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman and Safe Superintelligence CEO Daniel Gross. Zuckerberg also poached Apple's (AAPL) head of AI foundation models, Ruoming Pang, according to Bloomberg. Meta is also spending on AI data centers, with Zuckerberg saying last week that the company is investing hundreds of billions of dollars to build several multi-gigawatt data centers around the country. One such facility, called Hyperion, will eventually scale up to support up to 5 gigawatts, or 5 billion watts, of capacity. For the quarter, analysts expect Meta to report earnings per share (EPS) of $5.89 on revenue of $44.83 billion, according to Bloomberg consensus estimates. The company saw EPS of $5.16 and revenue of $39.07 billion in the same period last year. Advertising revenue is expected to climb 15% year over year to $44.09 billion, while Reality Labs should bring in $386 million. Read more: Live coverage of corporate earnings While Meta is spending truckloads of money on its AI buildout, it's also seeing some early returns on its investments. 'AI has already made us better at targeting and finding the audiences that will be interested in their product than many businesses are themselves, and that keeps improving,' Zuckerberg said during the company's Q1 earnings call. 'In just the last quarter, we're testing a new ads recommendation model for Reels, which has already increased conversion rates by 5%,' he added. 'And we're seeing 30% more advertisers are using AI creative tools in the last quarter as well.' It's a strategy that Wall Street is taking a liking to. 'Given audience scale, we continue to see Meta as one of the best AI opportunity stocks, with potential revenue upside as AI capabilities are integrated into the ad stack,' BofA Global Research analyst Justin Post wrote in an investor note ahead of Meta's earnings. Meta is also pushing further into the smart glasses space as another avenue to generate AI revenue. The company already offers its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, and in June, it unveiled its Oakley Meta glasses. The company is also working on standalone AI glasses that it will release in the future. All of this comes as Meta continues its push into what Zuckerberg calls 'personal superintelligence.' 'Our mission with the lab is to deliver personal superintelligence to everyone in the world, so that way we can put that power in every individual's hand,' he said during an interview with The Information's TITV. 'It's a different thing than what the other labs are doing. This is going to be something that is the most important technology in our lives.' Teaching With AI: ChatGPT Study Mode Transforms Student Learning

ChatGPT Study Mode provides students with a Socratic interface and experience designed to foster ... More active learning and idea exploration rather than just passively receiving answers. Over the last three years, generative artificial intelligence and large language models like ChatGPT have caused much concern as people speculate whether ChatGPT will replace teachers, serve as a helpful teaching assistant, or make students too lazy to learn anything. With the introduction of ChatGPT Study Mode, OpenAI strongly argues that there is a pedagogical role an AI can play productively; essentially, it can shift from being an oracle that provides answers to a Socratic mentor guiding students through a process of learning discovery. ChatGPT Study Mode As Learning Companion Traditional student interactions with ChatGPT have often involved questions that provoke direct, comprehensive responses: lengthy explanations, step-by-step solutions, or even complete essays. While experienced users have been able to use these interactions as the basis for tutoring sessions, for the vast majority, that has not been the case. This is a problem because research shows that when students use ChatGPT as a tutor, their academic performance improves. But when it was used simply to generate answers, it often hindered learning. Part of the reason for this gap between power users and typical users is the route by which students have become aware of ChatGPT. According to Leah Belsky, OpenAI's VP of Education, 'Students are adopting AI via social media, through their friends, and often ahead of teachers and parents. Given this widespread use, we set out to understand how students are using ChatGPT, and how we might make it an even better tool for education.' ChatGPT Study Mode Is Built On Learning Science What makes Study Mode different is not just tone or interface, but pedagogical design. OpenAI worked with education researchers and learning scientists from more than 40 institutions worldwide in developing the tool. These experts provided both evaluations of AI responses and model answers from skilled teachers and tutors that the AI is trained to emulate. Part of being a good learning companion is understanding what a learner already knows and what they are trying to learn. Toward that end, Study Mode is constantly assessing students and context to determine how it can best serve this role, prompting students with questions, calibrating to their level of understanding, and encouraging them to work through problems rather than simply read about them. The result is a student experience that mimics consensus good teaching. For instance, a student asking about game theory will no longer receive an instant mini-lecture. Instead, the system first asks: 'What are you trying to learn? What's your background?' This lets the AI tailor its responses not just to the topic, but to the learner. In addition to asking clarifying questions and probing a student's assumptions, it will also adapt to their pace of learning. This ensures it avoids dumping too much information at once, instead scaffolding its response to promote understanding one concept at a time. If a student tries to evade this process and just asks for the answer, the AI will resist the request and instead redirect the student to engage with the material. The goal is to help students build confidence through effort and to lower the barrier to entry for deeper academic exploration. ChatGPT Study Mode Challenges And Next Steps While Study Mode is a powerful shift, it raises important questions. For example, can educators or parents enforce its use? Not yet. Admin-level controls for schools or education platforms are not available at launch, though OpenAI confirmed it is exploring that functionality in future updates. There is also the perennial concern that students might simply toggle back to the default ChatGPT interface when they get frustrated. Belsky acknowledges this risk but argues that motivation is the stronger variable: 'If students feel confident they can learn, and if the learning experience is engaging, they are more likely to stay with it.' That sense of engagement may turn out to be the product's most important feature. Where early learning software emphasized static content and repetition, Study Mode creates an interactive, dynamic, and responsive dialogue—the kind most often found in small group seminars or one-on-one tutoring sessions. It's AI as educational dialogue, not as content delivery. ChatGPT Study Mode Captures Learning Process One of the most intriguing long-term possibilities raised by Study Mode is the opportunity to capture and analyze the dialogue between student and AI as a form of assessment. Unlike traditional testing, which evaluates static outputs, these dialogues could offer a window into how students think, how they revise their understanding, and how their reasoning improves over time. One of the most limiting aspects of traditional classroom instruction, compared to one-on-one teaching, is the inability to pay attention to everyone all the time. When there is just a single instructor and student, there is no need for written examinations because the teacher observes the learning process as it happens. The great potential for Study Mode as it develops is that as the dialogue between student and AI becomes more natural, it will be possible to capture more of the underlying learning process, rather than just the products of learning created by students. Ultimately, the process is what will illuminate understanding and confusion, and changes to the process will lead to improvement. Chat GPT Study Mode: A New Chapter In AI And Education ChatGPT Study Mode is a promising work in progress. It reflects a deliberate move away from answer automation and toward thoughtful, personalized guidance. As students and educators explore its capabilities, it has the potential to embody a vision for AI in education centered on what a student can learn rather than what the AI might say next.
