Kolkata: Paramanand Toppannawar, the 26-year-old MBA student at a premier B-school in Kolkata, who was granted bail on Saturday in an alleged rape case, was released from the police station on Tuesday.
He is now set to get back to the campus and resume studies, his counsel said.
TOI wrote on Tuesday how red tape delayed Toppannawar's release despite being granted bail against a bond of Rs 50,000. The family initially struggled to find a local guardian to sign the surety, and then the passport he submitted before cops as a bail prerequisite was inside his sealed hostel room, causing the delay in completing his bail bond procedures.
"We told police that since the passport was inside the room sealed by them, it was already in their custody. They finally agreed," said Kanishk Ravindran, his counsel.

Following his release, the student from Karnataka is staying at a rented accommodation near the campus. "The hostel room allotted to him is still sealed, and he doesn't want to stay inside the institute now to avoid further complications. So he is putting up at rented accommodation with his parents," said Ravindran. He added that the second-year student was eager to resume studies since he has missed classes for two weeks.
An institute official clarified that there are no legal grounds that can prohibit him from attending classes but he will have to appeal before the institute with a copy of the bail order.

The accused have been identified as Mohammad Hazrat (32), a resident of Mundi Kharar, Mohali, and Sangam (35), of Kajheri village, Sector 52, Chandigarh. Both are unemployed. According to the police, a case was registered on the complaint of Ashish Kumar, a resident of Zirakpur, who works in accounts branch of a Kharar-based firm. On July 31, Ashish was approached by Hazrat, who claimed to possess $4,000 and offered to sell it at half the market rate. The accused neither delivered the dollars nor returned the cash. Both suspects were arrested on August 7, after being identified by the complainant.
