B-school student released from PS
Kolkata: Paramanand Toppannawar, the 26-year-old MBA student at a premier B-school in Kolkata, who was granted bail on Saturday in an alleged rape case, was released from the police station on Tuesday. He is now set to get back to the campus and resume studies, his counsel said. TOI wrote on Tuesday how red tape delayed Toppannawar's release despite being granted bail against a bond of Rs 50,000. The family initially struggled to find a local guardian to sign the surety, and then the passport he submitted before cops as a bail prerequisite was inside his sealed hostel room, causing the delay in completing his bail bond procedures. "We told police that since the passport was inside the room sealed by them, it was already in their custody. They finally agreed," said Kanishk Ravindran, his counsel. "The hostel room allotted to him is still sealed, and he doesn't want to stay inside the institute now to avoid further complications. So he is putting up at rented accommodation with his parents," said Ravindran. He added that the second-year student was eager to resume studies since he has missed classes for two weeks. An institute official clarified that there are no legal grounds that can prohibit him from attending classes but he will have to appeal before the institute with a copy of the bail order.

Red tape: B-school boy held back at police stn
Kolkata: Two days since recieving bail, red tape held back the release of the 26-year-old MBA student from Karnataka who had been accused of raping a young woman on the B-school campus two weeks ago. Paramanand Toppannawar, the second-year MBA student at Kolkata's premiere B-school was granted bail on Saturday, after a week's stay in police custody. He is still spending his days at Haridevpur Police Station. "As per the bail conditions, he needs to submit his passport before the police station. But his passport is at his hostel room which has been sealed by the cops for investigation. We have requested them to get the passport collected and submitted before the police station but it couldn't be done till Monday night," said Kanishk Ravindran, the youth's counsel. He was also asked not to leave the state and meet the investigating officer every alternate day. "We also haven't been able to submit the surety as a local guardian needs to sign the document. A person known to Paramanand's parents have agreed for the same but he couldn't come to Alipore court on Monday as he claimed he couldn't get a transport due to the July 21 rally," said Ravindran. Toppannawar was granted bail on Saturday after his counsel questioned the delay in recording the woman's confessional statement before the magistrate and termed the woman a "ghost complainant". Incidentally, the woman had missed three dates set for the recording of her statement before the court and didn't submit her clothes, cellphone or consent for a medico-legal test, giving the investigators a hard time.

On bail, B-school boy to join classes but stay with parent off campus
Kolkata: Paramanand Toppannawar, the 26-year-old MBA student at a premier B-school in Kolkata, was granted bail on Saturday in an alleged rape case. He is set to return to campus and resume his studies this week but will not stay in the institute hostel from now on. "He has missed more than a week's classes and is eager to resume studies at the earliest. However, the hostel room allotted to him is still sealed for investigation, and he doesn't want to stay on the institute premises. He is likely to stay in rented accommodation near the institute and one of his parents is likely to stay with him," said Kanishk Ravindran, the youth's counsel. Institute officials said since the court granted him bail and there is no condition preventing him from entering the campus, there is no basis on which the institute can restrict him from attending classes or staying at the hostel. Yet, since the matter is sensitive, they are seeking legal advice. He was also asked not to leave the state, to submit his passport to the police, and meet the investigating officer every alternate day. Although he was granted bail late on Saturday, he spent Sunday at Haridevpur PS due to bond-related legalities. His lawyers said he is likely to leave the police station on Monday evening, after completing all formalities. "We are supposed to submit Rs 25,000 before the cash branch of the court, but it was closed on Sunday. We are also procuring his passport to submit to police," said Ravindran. Meanwhile, the B-school campus has been abuzz with discussions on whether he should be allowed to attend classes. While a section of students and teachers feel that sharing space with him might make other students uncomfortable, others believe he should be allowed in since he was granted bail.

IIM-C's academic council to take call on student arrested for rape
The Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) has called a meeting of its academic council this week over the arrest of a second-year student in a rape case. Paramanand Mahaveer Toppannawar, 26, was arrested last Saturday for allegedly raping a young woman in a hostel room on the Joka campus of the institute. He is in police custody till July 19. According to an official of the premier institute, the academic council will take a call on whether to allow Toppannawar to attend classes if the court grants him bail. 'Attendance is mandatory in the two-year MBA programme. Since Toppannawar is in police custody, he has missed some classes. So, the academic council of the institute has to take a legal opinion regarding whether to allow him to attend classes if he gets bail. If he is found guilty, his degree will be cancelled,' said an official. Following the arrest of the student in the rape case, the IIM-C, in a statement, had said: 'The institute has zero tolerance for such incidents and remains steadfast in upholding a safe and respectful campus environment. We are also taking all necessary steps to support the process of ongoing investigation and ensure that institutional protocols are adhered to.' The IIM-C had also sent an email to students, asking them to reach out to the institute's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and student council with any concerns or questions. A standard operating protocol (SOP) was also circulated for the students and professors living on the campus. Meanwhile, the SIT of Kolkata Police, which is probing the rape case, is screening through the call data records (CDR) of the accused and the woman to ascertain how long they knew each other. 'The accused is giving contradictory statements. Sometimes he says he met the woman on a dating app, sometimes he claims to know her through a counselling app. This needs to be investigated. We are also trying to know whether the accused used sleeping pills to spike the food and water offered to the woman,' a senior police officer involved in the probe said. In her complaint to the police on July 12, the woman, who claimed to be a psychologist, had alleged that Toppaunwar called her to the Joka campus a day ago for a 'counselling session', and the two had met on social media. The woman alleged that she lost consciousness and was raped after she consumed spiked food and water offered by the accused on a hostel room.

Kolkata B-school rape case: Woman wrote rape complaint at police station, cops with CCTV back-up; form SIT for probe
24-year-old psychologist reported a rape on a Kolkata business school campus, leading to the arrest of an MBA student KOLKATA: The 24-year-old psychologist, who was allegedly raped on the campus of a premier business management school in Kolkata, walked into Thakurpukur PS around 7.30pm on Friday, accompanied by a male friend, said police sources. She wrote out her complaint while seated in front of the duty officer. The officers then escorted her to Haridevpur PS, where the complaint was formally lodged, an officer added. Police said they have CCTV footage to corroborate the facts, in response to the woman's father's claim that 'nothing has happened.' On Saturday, police arrested second-year MBA student Paramanand Toppannawar. He has been remanded in police custody for seven days. But barely 12 hours after the complaint was lodged, the woman's father said the police had 'made' his daughter file the complaint. Following this, police formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Meanwhile, a senior official of the institute told TOI that the accused and the woman had come together to the campus in a car and she had left the campus on her own after spending around 2 hours 45 minutes inside. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo The official said the accused had informed the security office via mail that a friend would be coming to his hostel on Friday. The institute official said: 'The two entered together in a car at 12.30pm when they first signed the logbook at entry gate. Next they signed at hostel gate at 12.45pm. The woman left on her own in a car after making exit entry at hostel gate at 3.10pm.' The SIT has collected CCTV footage from Thakurpukur PS, along with other evidence, to establish a clear chronology of Friday's events. The woman, in her complaint, said she went to the campus around 11.45am on Friday for a private counselling session with Toppannawar when he took her to his hostel room, spiked her drink, and allegedly assaulted and raped her. But, on Saturday, her father told reporters that his daughter's scooter rammed an auto on DH Road. She lost consciousness and woke up at SSKM, where cops questioned her and then made her write the plaint. Since then, the woman has neither agreed to a medico-legal test nor submitted her apparel and cellphone. Police said they checked CCTV cameras and traffic records on DH Road and found no evidence of any accident between Friday afternoon and evening involving a scooter and auto rickshaw. 'We have CCTV evidence that shows the woman entering Thakurpukur PS at 7.30 pm with another man. She narrated the ordeal, following which she wrote the plaint sitting inside the PS. Once it was drafted, she was escorted in a police car to Haridevpur PS, under whose jurisdiction the institute falls,' said a senior officer. Cops said while there were some marks of assault on her body, they didn't find any evidence of accident on her. 'She initially even confessed before the doctor at SSKM about the sexual assault and other physical assaults on her while she was inside the hostel room on Friday. But she has not been cooperating with cops since then,' said an officer. Police have come across inconsistencies even in her statement. While she had written in plaint that she was not allowed to enter her name in the register, institute officials said she had registered her name at 12.30 pm at the entrance and at 12.45 pm at the hostel gate. The register also shows she left the hostel at 3.10 pm after entering her exit time. The SIT summoned the woman and her parents to Haridevpur PS, but they didn't turn up till late on Sunday. Her father's phone was also switched off throughout the day. (The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
