60,000 enthusiasts expected at Sabah Moto Day

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Moto Day (SMD) 8.0 is set for August 16–17 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and aims to attract at least 60,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from the state and beyond, including Brunei, Sarawak and Labuan. The event, organised by Kelab Dua Roda Bersatu in collaboration with the Anti-Drug Squad (Skuad Antidadah), emphasises youth engagement, anti-drug awareness and enhanced safety protocols.
Advertisement Sabah Anti-Drug Squad Chairman, Datuk Mazlan Joehari Manan said SMD is not just about bikes but also unity and positive values. 'We're using this gathering as a platform to spread anti-drug messages and grow our membership among youth. 'This isn't just a bike fest, it's a movement for change and we welcome everyone, with or without a motorcycle, to join the cause,' he said on Tuesday. Currently, the squad has 13,000 members, with a long-term goal of reaching 100,000.
Advertisement The programme will feature interactive booths, anti-drug talks in collaboration with the National Anti-Drugs Agency, and a testimony session by a former addict turned entrepreneur, 'Boss Gary' of Pate Grill House of his journey to recovery. A charity convoy to a Tuaran orphanage is also planned, with participation open to all riders, including those interested in joining the squad. Special draws including grand prizes of motorcycles will be held for members. Event founder Rudhi Hariyanto Ghazali, who also chairs Kelab Dua Roda Bersatu, assured the public, car drivers especially, that safety had been significantly enhanced this year. 'With support from city police, UMS security, and an addition of 40 Rela personnel, traffic will be rerouted behind 1 Borneo to avoid residential areas and reduce congestion. Minister raises concern over tourism safety in Sabah

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, he said numerous complaints had been received regarding misconduct and illegal activities at several tourist locations, which could affect the industry's safety reputation. He recently led a joint inspection operation in Tawau involving his ministry's licensing and enforcement division, the Immigration Department, police, and other agencies. The two-day operation included checks on 30 tourist buses and vehicles, 15 tourism business premises, 40 boats, and four jetties, resulting in summonses for nine offences. Findings revealed that some companies, appearing locally owned, were operated by foreign investors, including those from China, and were involved in unlicensed activities such as operating water chalets, aquaculture, and homestays on agricultural or farming land. Tiong urged local authorities to take swift action against unlicensed operators and stressed that while foreign investment is welcome, it must comply fully with Malaysian laws and regulations. Mother, son die after suspected food poisoning at wedding

TAWAU: A woman and her nine-year-old son died, believed to be from suspected food poisoning, after attending a wedding reception at a residential area in Batu 4, Jalan Apas here last Saturday. The victims, Nazuah Pili, 36, and Mohd Amran Masran, fell unconscious after suffering prolonged diarrhoea and vomiting upon returning home at around 11am. Tawau acting district police chief Superintendent Champin Piuh said the case was reported by a 24-year-old niece of the victim, who requested that an investigation into the deaths be opened. Initial questioning of the complainant and the victim's husband revealed the mother and son had brought back a food package from the reception, which the husband also consumed. Mosques, surau under Jakim and Jawi to hold special prayer for Zara Qairina tomorrow

Jakim director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee, in a statement, said the session is being held following instructions from Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. He said the event is a gesture of love, solidarity and compassion towards the bereaved family, calling on all Muslims to attend. 'May the prayers offered serve as a source of strength and solace, as well as a continuous charitable deed for the late Zara Qairina,' he said, extending condolences to the family on behalf of Jakim.
