Kerala Cabinet calls Achuthanandan a symbol of relentless democratic struggle

News184 days ago
Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 24 (PTI) The Kerala cabinet on Thursday described former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan's life as 'one of relentless struggle for the protection of democratic values" and said his passing was a great loss to the state's political and democratic movements.
Achuthanandan, a veteran Communist leader, died on July 21 in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 101. He was cremated with full honours at Valiya Chudukadu in Alappuzha district late on Wednesday evening.
Expressing profound grief at the loss of Achuthanandan, the Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, noted that he was a symbol of a glorious legacy of struggles, extraordinary determination, and uncompromising stances in resistance.
'His passing marks the loss of a valuable political presence that bridged the era of the national freedom movement with contemporary politics," the Cabinet said in its tribute.
Born into poverty, Achuthanandan began life as a farm labourer in Kuttanad, where he organised workers against wage and caste-based exploitation.
He walked from village to village, bringing agricultural labourers together and leading campaigns for better pay, job security, and land reform, the Cabinet said.
He was at the forefront of efforts to abolish the 'chaappa" system, an inhuman method of labour recruitment.
Achuthanandan's political journey began with the freedom struggle and developed through the worker-peasant movements that shaped Kerala's leftist landscape. His name remains closely associated with the historic Punnapra-Vayalar uprisings of the 1940s.
Elected to the state Assembly multiple times — from Ambalapuzha in 1967 and 1970, Mararikulam in 1991, and Malampuzha in 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 — he served as Leader of the Opposition and was Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011.
From 2016 to 2021, he chaired the Kerala Administrative Reforms Commission.
'As Chief Minister, he led Kerala forward through several key administrative decisions. In his role as Leader of the Opposition, he raised numerous people's issues in the Assembly. VS was a statesman who made unparalleled contributions to governance, law-making, and the political history of Kerala. His Cabinet functioned with a constant effort to reflect the voice of the people in governance and to take the state forward on the path of development," the Cabinet said.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Achuthanandan's son V A Arun Kumar also expressed his deep sorrow and gratitude, recalling the painful realisation that the morning marked their first without him.
'Hundreds of people close to my father wished to see him while he lay on his sickbed. But due to strict instructions from the doctors, no one could be allowed to meet him in his final days. I know many must have felt disappointed by this. I still wonder if I was able to respond warmly enough even to those who came to the hospital to offer their support," he said.
He said it took him a long time to accept his father's passing.
'Everything that happened afterwards feels like a dream. I still vividly remember sitting next to my father on the bus, watching the sea of people flowing past us, waving their hands in farewell, on the journey to Valiya Chudukadu," Kumar said.
Recognising the efforts of all who stood with them, the family also conveyed their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, well-wishers, and the thousands who gathered to honour Achuthanandan.
'I am deeply grateful to everyone –the doctors at the hospital, those who came to comfort us, the thousands who stood with my father one last time, and the party… Thank you all," Kumar wrote. PTI TGB TGB ROH

Peshawar, Jul 27 (PTI) Unknown gunmen fired at a gathering protesting against counter-terrorism operations in Pakistan's northwestern province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, leaving three dead and many injured, a top official said. A day earlier, a mortar strike claimed the life of a girl in the Zakha Khel area of the Khyber District, sparking the Sunday demonstration, during which locals placed the girl's body in front of the Momand Ghuz security checkpoint. Suhail Afridi, the special assistant to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, said three people died and eight were injured in the firing by terrorists on the demonstrators in the Tirah Valley. Following the incident, the grieving families and residents of the area staged a protest by blocking the Tank-South Waziristan Road, and demanded immediate identification and action against those responsible for the killings. Afridi said, 'Following the girl's death on Saturday, locals staged a protest in front of the Frontier Corps compound today. They had gathered near he gates when shots were fired." 'I spoke to district officials who told me that terrorists belonging to Fitna-al-Khawarij fired at the protesters," he said, using the term designating members of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Only Dhankhar, PM Modi know real reason behind VP's exit: Mallikarjun Kharge

NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said he has no information on the actual reason for Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President, holding that it was for Dhankhar to tell what really happened, as the matter was between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi . "I don't know all those details. He (Dhankhar) was always on the govt's side. He should say what happened," Kharge was reported as saying by news agency PTI, in response to a question on whether Dhankhar was forced to resign as he spoke in favour of farmers. Kharge was at Vijayapura in Karnataka. "When we raised several issues concerning farmers, the poor, international issues or foreign policy, he never used to give us an opportunity (in Rajya Sabha as its Chairman)," the Congress president said. "When we tried to raise issues by giving notices on issues regarding the poor, atrocities against women, Dalits and the downtrodden, and incidents like Hindu-Muslim clashes, he did not give us an opportunity. It (the reason for Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President) is between him and Modi. We don't have any information on that," Kharge clarified. Notwithstanding Kharge's stance, senior leaders from his party have, since Dhankhar's abrupt departure as VP, have been asserting that there is far more to the episode than meets the eye.

Sharing the suspension order of SE Prashant Singh on X, Uttar Pradesh Energy and Urban Development Minister A K Sharma said, 'Upbhogta Devo Bhav (consumer is god)!" 'The SE of Basti, Prashant Singh, has been suspended with immediate effect for his insensitivity and indecent behaviour towards the complaint of electricity consumers. 'All other electricity officers and employees have been directed for effective and quick solution of consumer problems. Everyone should be ready for public service," Sharma said. The suspension order was issued on Saturday by Chief Engineer (administration) Arvind Nayak on behalf of the managing director of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam (PVVN). It said that Bharat Pandey, a resident of Mudaghat in Basti district, lodged a complaint with Singh over phone on July 18 about non-supply of electricity. The suspension order said Singh behaved 'indecently" with the complainant despite being in a responsible position, which fell under the category of 'misconduct". Singh will remain attached to the office of the MD, PVVN, Varanasi, during his suspension period, the order said. Accountability will be fixed from the top management of the power corporation to the field-level officials, he said.
