Brian Dawkins reflects on the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX defensive performance vs. the Chiefs
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Pro Football Hall of Famer and Philadelphia Eagles legend Brian Dawkins.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Dawkins discussed representing Boehringer & Lilly's It Takes 2 health initiative, spreading awareness about getting tested for kidney disease, and reflecting on the Eagles' defense's performance in Super Bowl LIX, which forced Kansas City into numerous turnovers and pressured Patrick Mahomes.
The "It's In Your Hands: It Takes 2" CORE Kidney float debuted with Dawkins aboard at the 2025 Rose Parade. The collaboration reflected a shared commitment to kidney health and the importance of teamwork in understanding kidney disease comprehensively.
The Eagles' defense collected six sacks and two interceptions on three-time Super Bowl MVP Mahomes en route to a 40-22 victory. Dawkins reflected on the game, sharing his opinion on Philadelphia's shocking dominance over the Chiefs' experienced offensive stars.
"I was surprised that it happened the way that it happened. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that's not something I thought would happen. I thought it was going to be a reverse of fortune that the Eagles would make that last drive to win the game this time around; I thought it would be that type of a close game." said Dawkins, "But it was not from the jump that the defense stepped up and played the best game, probably that you would see that I can remember."
Dawkins spent thirteen of his sixteen NFL seasons in Philadelphia, achieving tremendous success with NFC Championship appearances under then-head coach Andy Reid. The defense was prominent on those teams that fell short of a Super Bowl title in 2004.
"Sometimes we have done some things with Jim Johnson, Reggie White, and the crew. They did some things back in the day. But I'm just telling you, on that stage, though, to be able to perform to the level in the Super Bowl the way that they did, unbelievable." said Dawkins, "I was so excited to see them doing it that way, winning the game because it's the Super Bowl. I'm a defensive guy, so to see them dominate the way that they did, I loved it."

Luke Hodge calls for AFL rule change as Harley Reid set to sign $25 million deal

AFL great Luke Hodge has added his voice to calls for the league to place a cap on the maximum length of contracts that players can sign. And leading commentator Gerard Whateley says he "shudders" at what an 11-year deal for Harley Reid could do to a club. The AFL is reportedly considering introducing a maximum contract length in the next collective bargaining agreement (CBA), amid reports Reid wants an 11-year deal to remain at the Eagles. Reid's management have reportedly suggested a new two-year deal that would then trigger a nine-year extension, and the total deal is believed to be around the $25 million mark. A number of Victorian clubs are also believed to be willing to offer the same money. Sam Taylor, Connor Rozee, Aaron Naughton, and Mac Andrew are among a number of players on deals in excess of seven years, while Buddy Franklin famously signed a nine-year deal to join the Swans. Speaking on SEN radio on Monday, Whateley and fellow commentator Sam Edmund said they believe there shouldn't be a cap and clubs should face the consequences if a long-term deal doesn't work out. But Hodge disagreed, with the Hawthorn champion saying: 'I actually don't mind the capped length of a contract. If it was put in there, Melbourne wouldn't be in the position that they are with three similar blokes (Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kysaiah Pickett) with long-term deals that they can't move because they had the heavy money and long-term deals. 'I know that is pushing against the trend of you guys. But what we have seen in the past is people in football clubs make shocking decisions through desperation, and I don't think the future of that club should be held to ransom because of it.' RELATED: AFL takes action after Collingwood denied in controversial moment Jobe Watson could deliver Nathan Buckley as next Demons coach Edmund said he doesn't think a change will be made anytime soon, and certainly won't affect Reid's next deal. 'I don't feel like it is anywhere near the here and now," he said. "It certainly doesn't come up in any of the conversations with the clubs, the CEO's meeting or anything of that nature. 'They have put extra protection mechanisms if you'd like for those really big contracts that require whole of board approval and the like. I don't think it is something that is coming in the here and now. 'And I hate the whole idea of saving clubs from themselves. These are adults, these are professionals. They know what they are doing, and if they are prepared to take a risk, then they are prepared to take a risk. Live by the sword, die by the sword.' Gerard Whateley 'shudders' at thought of long Harley Reid deal Whateley pointed out that a big deal for Reid or anyone else might act as a "cautionary tale" by the time of the next CBA. 'It can't be until 2028 anyway (with) the collective bargaining agreement and how players feel there. I do think by then, we are going to have a few cautionary tales," he said. "But I shudder at the idea of doing an 11-year contract for Harley Reid. As what if after five years - if it doesn't turn - of misery at West Coast and he wants to get out, and he still has so long to go. The downside is tangible. And if you're a great player, you'll be fine doing five (years), then three and then four rather than doing 11 in one go and throwing yourself into the complete unknown.'

Super Bowl champion Eagles' tush push play helps secure 34-27 preseason win over Bengals

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and most of the starting lineup that returned for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles took a night off. The tush push is always in play. Without Hurts behind center, the Eagles used the contentious short-yardage play to success again, beating a potential ban in the offseason, then getting a helpful shove on quarterback Tanner McKee for a score to help Philadelphia beat the Cincinnati Bengals 34-27 on Thursday night in the preseason opener for both teams. The Eagles wasted no time breaking out the play that narrowly survived banishment to live on in the playbook. Against a Bengals team that played starters, including QB Joe Burrow and NFL receiving leader Ja'Marr Chase, the Eagles had the crowd buzzing when they assembled in the familiar formation on fourth-and-goal from the Bengals 1-yard-line on their opening drive of the game. The Eagles used their rugby-style scrum to nudge McKee into the end zone for the first — of an expected many, many more — tush push TD of the season. 'Live reps, we don't do a ton of them,' McKee said of the push. 'Just getting those types of snaps, technique, coaching points, that's a big thing in what we do.' The Eagles are bullish on McKee, a sixth-round pick out of Stanford in 2023, and he's firmly entrenched as Hurts' backup. The Eagles let McKee rip — he played into the second half and finished 20 of 25 for 252 yards and touchdown passes to Ainias Smith and Darius Cooper. Kyle McCord, a sixth-round pick out of Syracuse and raised a diehard Eagles fan, threw a pick-six in his debut in mop-up duty. McCord, from nearby Mount Laurel, New Jersey, led the FBS last season with 4,779 yards passing, a total that broke Deshaun Watson's Atlantic Coast Conference single-season record. Burrow got his work in and threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns that included a 38-yard score to Chase. 'We've still got a ways to go,' Burrow said. 'But it was a good start. It's just good to play football again. We got 15 reps tonight, so we're 15 reps better.' The Bengals had long odds to win the Super Bowl, per BETMGM Sportsbook. The betting favorite to win the Lombardi Trophy remained the Eagles. 'This was a team effort in the loss,' Bengals coach Zac Taylor, who then rattled off a lengthy list of mistakes. 'I like the fight in our guys. They came back at the end, that I appreciate. But there's a lot of things we've got to fix as a team." Hurts and Barkley, who topped 2,000 yards rushing last season, were among the scores of starters that coach Nick Sirianni rested. The Eagles' whirlwind offseason included a parade and a White House visit and the page will officially be turned when the championship banner will be raised at Lincoln Financial Field next month in the prime-time season opener. 'It's great to have Jalen on the headset,' Sirianni said. Better yet, when he's making plays. Brotherly love? Burrow completed a 9-yard pass on the opening drive to Brown and the halfback was pushed out of bounds by a familiar face, his twin brother and Eagles safety Sydney Brown. The brothers starred in college at Illinois and played against each other last season in an Eagles' win. 'It's a cool opportunity, it's unique,' Sydney Brown said. 'I haven't tackled him since I feel like I was 16. It's been a while.' The birthday boy Hurts turned 27 on Thursday and was gifted a night off. What to get the Super Bowl MVP who has everything? Hurts already has a Super Bowl ring after the Eagles' 40-22 thrashing over Kansas City and one other trip to the Super Bowl on his resume. He signed a contract in 2023 that guaranteed him at least $179.3 million over the life of the deal that expires after the 2028 season. Hurts had his helmet off and broke into a wide smile when he watched McKee break down the team before the game. Who needs two? There's one more preseason game at the Linc and one more chance to see the Eagles in Philly at preseason prices. Tickets in the 200-level Thursday night were going for about $30-$40 each on the secondary market; in the same ballpark for next week's second home game against Cleveland. Consider, tickets were priced at $38 each in the second level. Seem high? Ticket prices were listed as low as $630 and soared past $1,000 per ticket in the same section for the Sept. 4 season opener against Dallas. Up next Bengals: Play a Monday night game in Washington on Aug. 18. Eagles: Host the Browns on Aug. 16. The teams will hold joint practices next week. ___ AP NFL: Dan Gelston, The Associated Press

Khalen Saunders traded from Saints to Jaguars on same day he played Jaguars for Saints

Player for player trades are rare in the NFL these day. But the players having gone against one another on the same day? Even if it was a preseason Week 2 tie, that still has to be like seeing a bald eagle. The New Orleans Saints sent defensive tackle Khalen Saunders to the Jacksonville Jaguars for center Luke Fortner on Sunday, Aug. 17, after the two teams tied at 17. Saunders and Fortner still managed to end the day as enemies despite switching teams. Saunders won two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs prior to starting 27 of 30 possible games over the last two seasons for the Saints. He started for the Saints on Sunday. Fortner entered for the Jaguars as a backup. Saunders had one of the most notable moments in prime time during the 2024 season. During the Saints' Week 5 loss to the Chiefs, Saunders picked off Patrick Mahomes while dropping into coverage in the end zone late in the third quarter. Saunders, listed at 325 pounds, rumbled 37 yards up the field before being brought down. Coincidentally enough, his brother, Kameron Saunders, was a backup dancer for Taylor Swift on the "Eras Tour." Khalen Saunders was a third-round pick by the Chiefs in 2019 and spent his first four seasons of his career with the team. During the offseason, the Saints bolstered the defensive line by trading for Davon Godchaux and signing Jonathan Bullard. Fortner is a fourth-year guard from the University of Kentucky who lost his starting spot last season and is entering the final year of his rookie contract.
