"I will never receive the same love"- Dennis Schroder reveals why he'll never receive the same love as Dirk Nowitzki in Germany

Dennis Schroder has reportedly faced racism his whole life (Image via Instagram / @ds17_fg) Dennis Schroder recently discussed why German fans will always adore Dirk Nowitzki more than him. He went on to state that he feels he will never get the same respect in his country because he happens to be dark-skinned. This wasn't the first time when the NBA player has talked about facing racism. Last year, before the Paris Olympics, he alleged that he had reportedly faced racism his whole life. Similarly, during a December 2024 interview, he talked about his mental toughness to face racism. Dennis Schroder talks about dealing with racism almost his whole life As one of the greatest German basketball players of all time, Dennis Schroder already made history. However, he believes that he will never get the same kind of national adoration from his nation because of his skin color as some of Germany's other all-time greats, such as Dirk Nowitzki . During a recent interview, he said: 'When I was 14, I sat in front of the TV watching Dirk Nowitzki carry the flag at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. Back then I thought: how cool, there's no greater honor. It's a great honor, but for me it will never be the same as for Dirk. I will never receive the same love in this country, because I am dark-skinned.' Dennis Schroder has already talked about his lifelong battle with racism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo The basketball team captain further broke his silence on how he has encountered racism in his career, days before the Paris Olympics of 2024. Before the event, he said to German outlet Spiegel Sport: "I am attacked because I am black, my wife Ellen because she is with a black man. I don't just see myself in the role of flag bearer because I am black and can therefore make a statement against racism..' Dennis Schroder has previously explained how facing racism helped build his 'mental toughness' His challenging upbringing as a Black guy in Germany has always been a topic of conversation. From overcoming bigotry as a young child to being selected as the flagbearer to represent the same nation where he encountered it, Dennis Schroder's experiences shaped him into the man he is today. Dennis Schroder in action (Image via Instagram / @ds17_fg) Talking about it, before the Paris Olympic 2024, he said: "My mother is from Gambia and came to Germany as an immigrant. And with all the xenophobia and openly racist slogans on the Internet and on the streets, it is a strong sign that someone like me is allowed to carry the German flag.' Additionally, in December 2024, during an interview, he said: 'To be in this league for 12 years, you got to find a way to [have] mental toughness.. You got to come out with effort. You got to play on the defensive end… Growing up in Germany was tough, but it helped me.. I learned a lot..' Dennis Schroder is an amazing player whose negative and positive experiences have shaped his life. In Numbers: India's Asia Cup squad – IPL 2025 form under the spotlight

File Pic: Suryakumar Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy The announcement of India's 15-member squad for the 2025 Asia Cup has sparked plenty of debate, with the elevation of Test skipper Shubman Gill as T20I vice-captain and the return of spearhead Jasprit Bumrah grabbing headlines. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! While big names like Shreyas Iyer missed out despite stellar domestic and IPL showings, the selectors appear to have leaned heavily on recent performances in the shortest format — particularly the IPL 2025 season, the last competitive T20 cricket most of these players featured in. Poll Who do you think will be the standout player for India in the 2025 Asia Cup? Suryakumar Yadav Shubman Gill Jasprit Bumrah Hardik Pandya Suryakumar Yadav and Gill lead the batting charge Captain Suryakumar Yadav enters the Asia Cup in red-hot form. He was sensational in IPL 2025, powering Mumbai Indians to Qualifier 2 with 717 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 167.91. His consistency, flair, and ability to dominate attacks ensured he finished second on the run charts behind only Sai Sudharsan (759). Vice-captain Gill, who shouldered leadership duties for Gujarat Titans, enjoyed a prolific season as well. The right-hander amassed 650 runs with six fifties, striking at 155.87. Gill's run-making under pressure and recent form in England Tests has made him a natural deputy to Suryakumar in this squad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? HomeLane Get Quote Undo India Asia Cup squad: Why Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill are biggest talking points Abhishek Sharma, the big-hitting opener, has added further firepower to the lineup with 439 runs at a staggering strike rate of 193.39, including a whirlwind 141. In contrast, Tilak Varma had a modest season, managing 343 runs at 138.30 strike rate, while finishers Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh struggled to replicate their earlier form, scoring 357 and 206 runs respectively. All-rounders and spinners offer balance All-rounder Hardik Pandya had a steady IPL season, contributing with both bat and ball. He scored 224 runs at 163.50 while also picking up 14 wickets, underlining his importance as a finisher and sixth-bowling option. Axar Patel chipped in with useful runs (263 at 157.48), though his five wickets suggested a relatively quiet season with the ball. Among spinners, Kuldeep Yadav (15 wickets at 7.07 economy) and Varun Chakaravarthy (17 wickets at 7.66 economy) were effective in containing batters. Bumrah's return strengthens bowling The biggest boost for India is the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who looked in fine rhythm during IPL 2025. The ace pacer claimed 18 wickets in 12 matches at an economy of just 6.67, showcasing his trademark yorkers and control at the death. Arshdeep Singh was also among the wickets, finishing with 21 scalps, though his higher economy (8.88) could be an area of concern. The third pacer Harshit Rana's high economy (10.18) offset his 15 wickets in the season. Strong bench strength in reserves India's reserves underline the depth at their disposal. Prasidh Krishna bagged the Purple Cap with 25 wickets, while Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered 559 runs at a brisk 159.71. Riyan Parag (393 runs) and Dhruv Jurel (333 runs) further strengthened their cases for future selections. Selection debates linger Despite this depth, the omission of Shreyas Iyer (604 runs at 175.07 strike rate) — an IPL finalist and proven leader — continues to divide opinion. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar pointed to the 'abundance of T20 talent,' a reminder that even consistent performers are not guaranteed a place in India's crowded T20 landscape. As Team India gears up for the Asia Cup starting September 9, the players' IPL 2025 performances suggest a squad brimming with form and firepower. The bigger test will be whether they can carry this momentum onto the international stage — especially against arch-rivals Pakistan and in UAE conditions that often favour spin and tactical nous. Team India squad for Asia Cup 2025 Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh Reserve players: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal. Khelo India Water Sports Festival commences at Dal Lake with 400 athletes

Synopsis The Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) has begun at Dal Lake, featuring over 400 athletes from 36 states and union territories. Competitors will vie for 24 gold medals in rowing, canoeing, and kayaking. The event includes demonstration events like water skiing and dragon boat races. Athletes from Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Kerala are expected to be strong contenders. ANI The inaugural three-day Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) commenced at the iconic Dal Lake here on Thursday with over 400 athletes participating in the event, officials said. The athletes are competing for medals in rowing, canoeing and kayaking, and as many as 24 gold medals will be at stake over the next three days. To add to the glamour of the festival, there will be three demonstration events -- water skiing, shikhara boat spring and dragon boat race. The KIWSF will see 36 states and union territories in action. Among them, all eyes will be on athletes from Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Kerala. "Since Services will not take part in these Games as a team, it will be good to see how the states compete and perform. The course has been prepared keeping all international specifications in mind and we are all set to go," competition manager, Bilquis Mir, a former World Cupper canoeist and an Olympic judge, said. KIWSF is a new addition to the Khelo India calendar. In 2025, two new events have been added. The Khelo India Beach Games took place in Diu in May. As per the Khelo Bharat Niti, both the Water Games and Beach Games are aimed at promoting sports and attracting tourism. For kayaking and canoeing, the last nationals held at Tehri (Uttarakhand) in November have been used as a qualifier. The top 15 in singles and doubles and the top eight fours will be participating in KIWSF. For rowing, the top eight from the nationals held in Bhopal in March this year will take part, officials said. There will be international flavour as well. Arjun Lal Jat, an Army rower who will represent Delhi, will be one of the main attractions. Jat, 28, has taken part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and won silver in the light-weight double sculls at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. The games will see almost equal representation from men and women. Of the 409 athletes competing for medals, 202 will be female. Madhya Pradesh (44), Haryana (37), Odisha (34) and Kerala (33) will have the largest contingent at KIWSF 2025. Gujarat, Puducherry and West Bengal have the smallest teams, officials said. The water sports festival is the second Khelo India event in Jammu and Kashmir after the Khelo India Winter Games held in Gulmarg.
