Official final results confirm election results in 7th Ward race in Aurora
On election night, unofficial results from DuPage and Kane counties initially showed Tolliver leading at 50.48% of the vote compared to Banuelos at 49.12%. But now, official results from the two counties show Banuelos has won the seat at 50.66% of the vote to Tolliver's 48.84%.
'This is a moment of pure joy and gratitude — one I will carry in my heart forever,' Banuelos said in a Facebook post last week about his win. 'Thank you, Ward 7, for your trust and support.'
The final results were close — Banuelos received only 25 votes more than Tolliver. Results were also split by county, with Banuelos winning DuPage County by 92 votes but losing Kane County by 67 votes.
In total, Banuelos received 696 votes to Tolliver's 671 votes, official results accessed on Tuesday show.
State law requires a canvass of votes, which makes results official, be completed no later than 21 days after the election, which for the April 1 consolidated election was Tuesday.
Banuelos is set to officially take office at the city's Mayoral and Aldermanic Inauguration Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on May 13, which will be held at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Aurora.
'No matter who you voted for, please know this: I'm here to serve our entire community,' he said in the Facebook post. 'In the coming weeks, I'll be meeting with residents, local leaders, and organizations to put our shared priorities into action.'
Tolliver has been Aurora's 7th Ward alderman since he was appointed to the position after former longtime alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns died in June 2023.
Saul Fultz also campaigned for the 7th Ward alderman seat in the April 1 election, but he ran as a declared write-in and received less than 10 votes.
While official election results were available from DuPage, Kane and Will counties, Kendall County election results were still being shown online as unofficial at the time of reporting on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m., so vote totals for other Aurora city government races were still unofficial. But, the 7th Ward is fully within DuPage and Kane counties, so that race's results were official on Tuesday.

Trump slams 'anti-American' pushback after fresh delay to Arizona copper mine
U.S. President Donald Trump has slammed an appeals court decision to temporarily block a land transfer needed by mining giants Rio Tinto and BHP to develop what is slated to become one of the country's biggest copper mines. In a post on social media platform Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump said the latest setback to Arizona's Resolution Copper mine would impact thousands of jobs at a time when the world's largest economy "quite simply, needs Copper — AND NOW!" His comments came shortly after he met the chief executives of Rio Tinto and BHP at the White House, alongside Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. Two of the world's largest mining firms, Rio Tinto and BHP have been trying to develop the Arizona copper project together for roughly two decades, but the procedures have been beset by legal issues. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday issued a temporary restraining order to prevent a land transfer while the court considers challenges that have been brought by opponents including the San Carlos Apache Tribe, which is seeking to block the project over religious, cultural and environmental reasons. "It is so sad that Radical Left Activists can do this, and affect the lives of so many people. Those that fought it are Anti-American, and representing other Copper competitive Countries," Trump said in a Truth Social post. Resolution Copper described the Monday ruling as "merely a temporary pause," adding it was confident the court would ultimately affirm the necessary land transfer. "This proposed mine is a rip-off, will destroy a sacred area, decimates our environment, threatens our water rights, and is bad for America," Terry Rambler, chairman of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, said in a Facebook post. Addressing Trump's Truth Social post on the recent court ruling, Rambler said the U.S. president's comments "mirror misinformation that has been repeated by foreign mining interests that want to extract American copper." He added that he was willing to meet with the Trump administration to help "protect American interests." The Arizona copper project is a proposed underground mine roughly 60 miles east of Phoenix, close to the the town of Superior. The joint venture is 55% owned by Rio Tinto and 45% by BHP. Resolution Copper says the ore deposit represents "one of the most significant untapped copper deposits today" and estimates the potential for the project to add $1 billion a year to Arizona's economy. A highly conducive metal, copper is a critical component to virtually everything in the modern economy, from solar panels and wind turbines to defense applications and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Demand for copper is expected to skyrocket over the coming years, dramatically outstripping supply amid a transition to a low-carbon world. In a LinkedIn post, BHP CEO Mike Henry thanked Trump and Burgum for "for their strong leadership to reinvigorate mining and processing supply chains in and for America." Alongside Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm and the company's incoming CEO Simon Trott, BHP's Henry said they met with Trump and Burgum to underscore the firm's commitment to develop Resolution Copper.

Don't buy claims Trump runs a White House MAGA gift shop
In August 2025, after European leaders joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine, a photo circulated that social media users claimed (archived, archived) depicted Trump showing Zelenskyy and France's President Emmanuel Macron his White House Make America Great Again gift shop. The photo showed Trump, Zelenskyy, Macron and an unidentified man in front of a shelf of neatly arranged hats and other items. The hats bore slogans including "Make America Great Again," "Trump 2028," "4 More Years" and "Gulf of America." "Make America Great Again" was a term popularized by Trump during his first and second presidential election campaigns. One X user whose post had more than 600,000 views at the time of this writing posted the photo with the caption, "Embarrassing….Trump showed Zelenskyy and Macron his MAGA gift shop at the White House" (X user @WUTangKids) The claim that the photo depicted Trump showing off a gift shop also circulated on Facebook (archived), Threads (archived), Instagram (archived) and Bluesky (archived). Snopes readers wrote in to ask if the claim was true. The photo of Trump, Zelenskyy and Macron was authentic and originally posted (archived) to X by Margo Martin, one of Trump's communications advisers. Martin identified Macron, who stood with his back to the camera in the photo. However, we found no evidence to support the accompanying claim that hat Trump was running a MAGA gift shop out of the White House. It was unclear where exactly Martin took the photo, though official photographs from the Aug. 18, 2025, meeting indicated that the leaders met at the White House. The Trump Organization, Trump's business managed by his sons Eric and Donald Jr., has an online merchandise store as of this writing that sells some of the items seen in Martin's photo, though the company does not appear to have a White House branch. The White House does have an official gift shop that supports injured Secret Service members and charitable causes. That shop does not sell hats like the ones seen in Martin's photo. Snopes contacted the White House to ask if Martin's photo showed a MAGA gift shop inside the White House as social media users claimed, and we await a reply. The Aug. 18, 2025, meeting with European leaders and Zelenskyy was not the first time Trump showed off the collection of merch to guests visiting the White House. Trump hosted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House on Aug. 8, 2025, as the pair signed a joint declaration of peace in the long-running conflict between the countries. Shortly thereafter, a video (archived) circulated online that featured Trump showing off the same collection of merch from Martin's photo to Aliyev. In the footage, Trump handed one item to Aliyev saying it was "for your wife." After showing off his "Trump 2028" and "4 More Years" hats, Trump gestured toward the video recorder and said, "Fellas, grab what you want, it's OK." The video from Aliyev's visit appeared to indicate that Trump kept a stock of his merch to give to guests as gifts rather than to run an official store. "Trump 2028" and "4 More Years" were references to Trump's previous indications that he would like to run for a third term despite the Constitution's 22nd Amendment that barred any person from being "elected to the office of the President more than twice." Trump told NBC in March 2025 that "A lot of people want me to do it," referring to running for a third term and that "There are methods which you could do it." During a CNBC interview on Aug. 6, 2025, Trump said he would "probably not" run again though "I'd like to." Trump further told Aliyev on Aug. 8, 2025, while holding a "Trump 2028" hat, "Everybody wants me to run." "45 | 47 Collection." Woman charged with threatening Trump's life
An Indiana woman accused of posting threatening messages about President Trump on social media is facing federal criminal charges after prosecutors say she admitted to Secret Service officers that she was set on 'killing' Trump to 'avenge' lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nathalie Rose Jones, 50, of Lafayette, Ind., was arrested during a protest event in Washington, D.C., on Saturday and faces charges of threats against the president, as well as transmitting threats across state lines, court documents show. Jones was already on the Secret Service's radar because of a series of posts she had made on Instagram and Facebook before she was interviewed and arrested in D.C., according to court records. In one Facebook post dated Aug. 6 and included in the court filing, Jones allegedly wrote that she 'literally told FBI in five states today that I am willing to sacrificially kill this POTUS by disemboweling him and cutting out his trachea.' According to a court filing, Jones agreed to speak with law enforcement on Friday about the messages she had posted online. Authorities said she told them that she believed Trump was a 'terrorist' and 'Nazi,' who she would kill at 'the compound' if necessary. Jones also allegedly told officers that she had access to a 'bladed object' to use to 'carry out her mission of killing' the president in retaliation for the pandemic death toll, which she attributed to Trump and his previous administration. Jones was tracked down in the District of Columbia the following day and confirmed her previous statements but said she no longer wanted to harm the president, records show. 'Threatening the life of the President is one of the most serious crimes and one that will be met with swift and unwavering prosecution,' U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said in a news release. 'Make no mistake — justice will be served.' Trump has faced multiple assassination threats, and he survived a shooting during a campaign rally in July 2024 when a bullet grazed his ear. The Hill's sister station NewsNation interviewed Jones during a protest in D.C. before her arrest Saturday. She told the station that she believed Trump's policies cost lives by undermining vaccines and health care needs of the vulnerable. 'This regime has to go, the whole administration,' she said. She also addressed Trump's recent federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and deployment of D.C.'s National Guard to address crime. 'You do not deploy the military against the American people,' Jones told NewsNation. 'We will not be suppressed. We will not exist in this authoritarian regime. We will not accept fascism.'
