A nationwide boycott of McDonald's is set to begin on June 24 and run through June 30. It is being organized by The People's Union USA as part of its ongoing 'Economic Blackout Tour.' Nationwide McDonald's boycott begins on June 24.(REUTERS)
The boycott targets the fast-food giant for rolling back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, along with broader criticisms of its corporate behavior.
Speaking to USA TODAY, John Schwarz, the founder of The People's Union USA, said, 'We're boycotting McDonald's because they've shown time and time again that profit matters more than people, from price gouging to tax evasion, from inequality in pay to exploitation in advertising.
"And yes, their DEI efforts feel more like promotional stunts than real systemic change. We're done funding companies that pretend to stand for something while doing nothing." What Are the Group's Main Accusations?
In an Instagram post, Schwarz detailed the group's grievances against McDonald's:
"They exploit tax loopholes and do not pay their fair share.
They engage in price gouging while wages stay low.
They suppress workers' rights and union efforts.
They support political figures who threaten democracy.
They practice performative DEI with no meaningful change.
They prioritize profit over people, community, and truth," he wrote. About The People's Union USA
On its website, The People's Union USA describes itself as 'a grassroots movement focused on economic resistance, corporate accountability, and real justice for the working class.'
Since launching the Economic Blackout Tour in February 2025, the organization has led previous boycotts targeting Target and Walmart.

BJP MLA Gets Showcause Notice After Vande Bharat Assault Video Goes Viral

Jhansi: The Uttar Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a show-cause notice to Babina MLA Rajiv Singh Parichha following a disturbing incident aboard the New Delhi-Bhopal Vande Bharat Express, where a passenger was allegedly assaulted by individuals identified as the legislator's supporters. The incident occurred on June 19 at Jhansi railway station and has since ignited a storm of criticism after CCTV footage of the assault went viral on social media, micro-blogging sites, and other media platforms. IANS does not confirm the authenticity of the video. In response to the viral video and mounting public outrage, BJP state general secretary Govind Narayan Shukla issued a notice to Parichha, stating that the act falls under serious indiscipline and demanding a written explanation within seven days. The 18-second clip shows a group of men slapping and hitting a passenger, identified as Rajkishore, with slippers inside coach E-2 of train number 20172. The video also shows MLA Parichha standing nearby during the incident. According to reports, the altercation stemmed from a dispute over seat number 49, which Rajkishore had been allotted. Parichha, who was travelling with his wife Kamli Singh (seat No 50) and son Shreyansh Singh (seat No 51), reportedly requested Rajkishore to switch seats, so the family could sit together. When the request was declined, tensions escalated. Upon arrival at Jhansi station, a group of men allegedly linked to the MLA boarded the train and assaulted the passenger. Former Madhya Pradesh minister, Congress leader and media head Mukesh Nayak condemned the incident on Instagram, describing it as a grim reflection of "good governance". He alleged that the elderly passenger was left bleeding from the nose after the attack. While Parichha has denied involvement in the assault, claiming the passenger misbehaved and caused a nuisance, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Jhansi confirmed that a non-cognizable report (NCR) was filed by the MLA. As of now, no formal complaint has been lodged by the victim, who reportedly disembarked in Bhopal and has expressed reluctance to pursue legal action. The incident has raised serious concerns about passenger safety aboard India's flagship high-speed trains. With the video continuing to circulate widely, the political and public fallout is far from over.

PhonePe prepares for $1.5 billion IPO: All you need to know

Digital payments and financial services platform PhonePe is gearing up for a $1.5-billion initial public offering (IPO) later this year. The Walmart-backed company has tapped Kotak Mahindra Capital, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley to arrange the offering. Key details: Draft paper filing: The company may file its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) by August. Target raise: It plans to raise around $1.5 billion through the listing, which is approximately Rs 13,000 crore, as per a Bloomberg report. Valuation: This would value the company at $15 billion, a significant jump over its last private valuation of $12 billion, in 2023. Live Events Key developments Flipback to India: In 2022, PhonePe, which was domiciled in Singapore, redomiciled to India. This is an important legal step for companies planning to list on Indian stock exchanges. The fintech firm was the first of many startups that returned to India driven by better listing prospects and regulatory ease. Fundraise: In May 2023, PhonePe completed raising $850 million in multiple rounds from General Atlantic, Ribbit Capital, Tiger Global and Walmart. It was valued at over $12 billion after these funding rounds. Between 2020 and 2023, the company's valuation more than doubled from $5.5 billion to $12 billion. Financials: PhonePe narrowed its net loss by 29% in financial year 2024 to Rs 1,996 crore, from Rs 2,795 crore in FY23. The improved financial performance was backed by 74% growth in its operating revenue to Rs 5,064 crore, from Rs 2,914 crore a year before. February 2025: The company publicly stated its intention to list on Indian bourses. The fintech startup did not give a timeframe for the IPO, saying the plans were initiated after considering revenue growth and improvement in its path towards profitability. April 2025: The digital payments firm transitioned from a private entity to a public company in April, according to filings with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). The conversion was approved by the company's shareholders through a special resolution passed at an extraordinary general meeting held on April 16. Diversification woes PhonePe is the market leader in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) space, and even though it has diversified to become a full-stack financial services platform, offering credit, insurance, and stockbroking over the past three years, UPI remains its core business. In FY24, PhonePe's financial services business brought in Rs 207.4 crore—a mere 4% of its Rs 5,064 crore total revenue. While the company has multiplied its revenue over the last few years, crossing the Rs 5,000-crore mark in overall income last year, diversifying its income streams is proving harder than expected.

Working with suppliers to reach $10 bn sourcing from India: Walmart CEO

Last year, Walmart said it had sourced goods worth over $30 billion from the Indian market in the last two decades for its global operations Press Trust of India New Delhi US-based retail giant Walmart is working with suppliers in India to meet its target of sourcing $10-billion goods from India for its operations worldwide, its global CEO Doug McMillon said here on Tuesday. Walmart has increased sourcing from India over the years, and it is excited with the progress made, he said. "....over the years, you can see how the story is unfolding, and it's really broadening and becoming much more interesting," he said. In December 2020, the Bentonville-headquartered retail giant announced a goal to source $10-billion products from India by 2027, aiming to boost exports in apparel, food, toys, and other categories. "At the beginning, we were sourcing products here with limited categories, but we were excited to get started... look what's happened in our sourcing business. "It's grown a lot, and now we have this goal of getting to $10 billion a year, which is a really big number, and together with the supplier community, we're working to achieve that," he said. McMillon, who is on a two-day India tour, also had a walk-through here that highlighted Walmart's India growth story, covering exports, digital innovation, building inclusive supply chains and empowering communities. Besides, he interacted with some of the sellers, who were trained under its supplier development programme, Walmart Vriddhi. On its e-commerce arm Flipkart and digital payments solution PhonePe, McMillon said, "What our teams have done to grow those businesses over the years has been inspiring." "We are really learning a lot from those businesses, the ability to innovate, the ability to move with speed, the ability to serve more and more customers, to develop sellers, to build an e-commerce marketplace, business that has just a really bright future and the chance to create a lot of opportunities for everyone," he added. On PhonePe, McMillon said the financial services businesses, already reaches a lot of people "and helps us make things more efficient easier". "We are very proud of what's happening with the bumblebee business... I'm really excited to hear about the work that's happening with agriculture," he said. Last year, Walmart said it had sourced goods worth over $30 billion from the Indian market in the last two decades for its global operations. Walmart is in India for over two decades. Walmart Global Sourcing set up office in Bengaluru in 2002, enabling Indian manufacturers to export to the US, Canada, Mexico, central America, and the UK, supplying products to Walmart stores. Earlier this month, Walmart said it is connecting with one lakh more micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the next three years in its supplier development programme in India, Walmart Vriddhi. Through its Vriddhi initiatives, Walmart is empowering the Indian MSMEs with critical business skills and market access, which has helped them to scale their business sustainably and contribute to India's economic growth story. Launched in 2019, Walmart Vriddhi has trained over 70,000 MSMEs so far by enabling access to digital commerce, personalised mentorship and strategic partnerships. Encouraged by the success of Vriddhi initiatives in India, Walmart has launched similar supplier development initiatives in Mexico (Crece con Walmart) and its home turf, the US (Grow with US).
