Rachel Zegler serenades London from Palladium balcony in Evita

Euronews02-07-2025
In the new West End production of Evita, starring Snow White star Rachel Zegler, one of the musical's most iconic moments takes place offstage.
Midway through the show, Zegler steps onto the London Palladium's exterior balcony to sing 'Don't Cry for Me, Argentina' to passersby on the street and the performance is streamed live to the audience inside the theatre.
The unique staging, directed by Jamie Lloyd, has drawn increasingly large crowds to the streets of London's West End, eager to catch Zegler's rendition for free.
Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber called the moment 'extraordinary,' praising how it captures Eva Perón's connection with the public in a way that's difficult to replicate on stage.
However, not everyone is thrilled. Some theatregoers - who paid up to £245 (€285) for a ticket - have voiced frustration at watching a recorded video of the song rather than experiencing it live in the theatre. Despite the backlash, others see it as a bold, theatrical gesture.
Check out the video above for footage of the performance and Andrew Lloyd Webber's comments.

'Lilo & Stitch': Disney's pleasant surprise

LE MONDE'S VERDICT – WORTH SEEING Just a few months ago, Disney left audiences with a sour taste in their mouths: After numerous controversies and a wave of widely followed boycotts, Snow White, released in theaters in March, proved to be the biggest financial failure in the company's history and one of the most trying live-action Disney films to watch. Released without controversy or excessive hype, Lilo & Stitch – the live-action adaptation of the 2002 animated film – may well be the first step toward reconciling with the public. Heavily inspired by E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982), the film recounts the daily life of Lilo, a rambunctious 6-year-old orphan raised by her older sister, who is herself closely monitored by social services threatening to take away her custody. At the moment when Lilo must be on her best behavior, she adopts Stitch, a strange pet as hyperactive as she is. What she does not know is that Stitch is an extraterrestrial creature being pursued by his creators, who want to bring him back to their spaceship. The film's relative success rests on a simple point: Lilo & Stitch is not a fairy tale, but a story rooted in a real place: a small Hawaiian island where real people live, with everyday routines, customs and struggles that drive the plot. In other words, for once, live actors actually seem to be interacting with more than just green screens. Far from being – as is often the case – the main attraction, special effects are kept to a minimum here, used mainly to bring Stitch, the living plush toy (and a dream merchandising product), and the fantasy creatures at the edge of the story to life.

Why has Disney's ‘Snow White' remake been banned in Lebanon?

ADVERTISEMENT Lebanon has banned Disney's live-action film Snow White from playing in cinemas because Israeli actress Gal Gadot is on the country's boycott list. According to local newspaper An-Nahar, Ahmad Hajjar, Lebanon's Interior Minister, recommended the ban. This is not the first time Lebanon has banned Gadot and films the 39-year-old actress has starred in. Both Death On The Nile and the Wonder Woman films were prevented from screening in the country due to the actress' ties to Israel. Gadot, who stars as the Evil Queen in Snow White , was born in Israel and prior to becoming a model and actress, served in the Israel Defense Forces. The actress has been a prominent supporter of Israel since October 7. During an impassioned speech at the Anti-Defamation League's summit in 2024, she said: 'Never did I imagine that on the streets of the United States, and different cities around the world, we would see people not condemning Hamas, but celebrating, justifying and cheering on a massacre of Jews.' The ban was prompted by the country's film and media watchdog during Israel's attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon that have resulted in civilian casualties. It follows Lebanon's earlier decision to block Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World , which stars Israeli actress Shira Haas. Gal Gadot in Snow White Disney From racist attacks on the film's Latina lead, Rachel Zegler, to controversy over the portrayal of the seven dwarfs and Gal Gadot's pro-Israel stance clashing with Zegler's comments on Palestine, Snow White has been fraught with controversy. Indeed, Zegler has been publicly pro-Palestine since 2021, and there were already calls for bans last year when the teaser trailer was released. Disney scaled back the 15 March Los Angeles premiere of the film due to ongoing controversies and since its premiere, Snow White has been both a critical and box office bomb. In our review , we wrote: 'Despite a committed performance from Rachel Zegler, who almost almost manages to make you forget that Gal Gadot simply cannot act or convincingly read a line, there's no getting around the skin-melting CGI monstrosity of the seven dwarfs. Granted, the film was between a rock and a hard place when it came to casting, but the end solution of having creepy digital avatars that are both photorealistic and Uncanny Valley-levels of distracting is misjudged in the extreme. How this nightmare fuel got past the unsharpened pencils in the quality control committee will remain a mystery for the ages.'
