ESPN reaches multi-year extension to air NFL draft as well as additional rights for DTC service
The two agreements were announced Wednesday morning, two hours before the Walt Disney Company announced its third-quarter earnings.
It also came after the NFL and ESPN announced a nonbinding agreement Tuesday night in which ESPN will acquire the NFL Network and other league media assets while the NFL gets a 10% equity stake in ESPN.
ESPN has aired the NFL Draft since 1980, when the league's annual selection meeting took place at the New York Sheraton Hotel. Back then, the draft was two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) and took 12 rounds.
Next year's draft will be in Pittsburgh and is expected to attract massive crowds over the three days. The first round has had its own night since 2010.
ESPN and ABC will each have their own telecasts of the first three rounds on Thursday and Friday. ABC will simulcast ESPN's coverage of the final four rounds on Saturday.
Besides ESPN's direct-to-consumer service, Disney+ and Hulu will also stream the ESPN, ABC, and ESPN Deportes' feeds under the multi-year agreement. The draft will also continue to be aired on NFL Network.
'We've been talking about the draft since last year and how we continue to build on that. ESPN has been a partner in that from day one, bringing, the fans closer to that event and building that event into one of the most popular events on the sporting calendar, which is incredible if you think back a few decades,' NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told The Associated Press. 'We know that relationship works, and we're proud that ESPN is going to continue to be a partner.'
ESPN will also produce a daily show leading up to the NFL Draft that will begin the day after the Super Bowl. That program will air most days on ESPN2, as well as being available on the direct-to-consumer service.
ESPN has also reached a licensing agreement that allows for additional NFL content and interactive features, including stats, fantasy football team performance and legalized sports betting information and tracking. It also allows ESPN to sell and bundle NFL+ Premium, the league's direct-to-consumer product that includes out-of-market preseason games and replays of full games.
There will also be expanded highlight rights for the ESPN direct-to-consumer service and Disney+.
'This will make the fan experience much stronger. The goal for ESPN when they launch the services is to create something that doesn't exist on linear (television) because the technology enables it,' Disney CEO Bob Iger said to AP. 'We've talked about personalization and personalized SportsCenter and the ability to essentially invent statistics and to tie betting to some of the programming.'

Rams sign OL John Leglue
The Rams signed an offensive lineman for the second straight day on Wednesday. They announced the addition of John Leglue to their 90-man roster. They had an open spot available, so there was no corresponding move. Leglue appeared in one game for the Falcons in 2023 and he made five starts at guard for the Steelers during the 2021 season. He returned to Pittsburgh last season and spent the year on the Steelers' practice squad. The Rams also signed offensive lineman Mike McAllister this week. Both of the new additions could find themselves back on the market when the team makes their cut to 53 players ahead of next Tuesday's deadline.

I'm really curious what you think about this situation because, in preseason, uh, it has been Xavier Hutchinson running as the flanker receiver with Christian Kirk in on the slot and Nico Collins obviously at X. And when they go to two receiver sets, it's been Christian Kirk as the second outside receiver. So right now, honestly, even though Jayden Higgins is getting drafted, I don't think either of these two guys are gonna have a big week one role. But it's a long season, man, and like Xavier Hutchinson is a nice role player, but not somebody that you want to rely on. They want one of these two rookies to pop at some point this year. And this is an offense that I think is gonna be much better this year. I, I know the offensive line talent is still a question. But I just think them getting some real coaching in here, getting the pass protection rules right is more important than getting five superstars on the offensive line. CJ Stroud having more control at the line of scrimmage is a very under-discussed story in the fantasy space. That's gonna help a lot, again, from a protection standpoint, him being able to ID things, call things out, be that kind of sheriff at the line of scrimmage. Not every quarterback needs to be the cookie cutter, Shanahan-like quarterback. I think Stroud's gonna thrive with more control at the line of scrimmage because he's so smart, he makes good decisions. He's a football junkie, and he's accurate and he's on time with everything. So this is an offense I want to invest in. And even if Jayden Higgins starts to see, this is the thing that's interesting to me. Is that Higgins, in a weird way, because they were using him at X receiver when Nico Collins wasn't playing, and I think, I actually think he would. If he is an X receiver, he's gonna help Nico move around, which is important to me, but also, I think he should probably play as like a jumbo flanker slot player. But I don't want to forget about Jaylen Noel here. Like Jaylen Noel is a badass, man. Like I, I think one of these two Texas receivers is gonna pop this year. You don't need to necessarily draft them. You need to maybe keep them kind of um, in the back of your mind if one of them starts to play more. And I just think the odds that it's Noel instead of Higgins are pretty even, and it's not discussed that way in the fantasy football space. Close

4 WRs the 49ers could sign to help after Demarcus Robinson suspension
The San Francisco 49ers continue to take hit after hit to their depth in training camp, but instead of another injury, this loss is on the player, as wide receiver Demarcus Robinson has been suspended three games by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy, stemming from his DUI back in January. This leaves San Francisco's wide receiver room in rough shape with Brandon Aiyuk rehabbing a torn ACL, Jauan Jennings dealing with a calf injury/contract dispute, Jordan Watkins suffering a high ankle sprain and Jacob Cowing battling a hamstring injury. The only healthy wideouts on the 49ers roster right now are Ricky Pearsall, Russell Gage, Robbie Chosen, Junior Burgen, Isaiah Hodgins, Malik Turner and Malik Knowles. While that list doesn't exactly strike fear in opposing defensive coordinators and cornerbacks, there are a few free agents that general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan could consider signing before Week 1. Let's take a look at the best options. Amari Cooper Cooper, 31, was a first-round pick of the Las Vegas (then Oakland) Raiders in the 2015 NFL draft after an impressive collegiate career at Alabama that included an All-American final season. In his 10 professional seasons, he's caught 711 passes for 10,033 yards and 64 touchdowns, making five Pro Bowls in the process. However, he had just 44 receptions for 547 yards and four scores in 2024 with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Tyler Boyd Boyd, 30, was a second-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2016 NFL draft after three years at Pittsburgh, where he earned All-ACC honors every year. In nine seasons, he's caught 552 passes for 6,390 yards and 31 touchdowns. However, he had one of the worst seasons of his career in 2024, recording 39 receptions for 390 yards with the Tennessee Titans. Gabe Davis Davis, 26, played collegiately at UCF from 2017-19, earning All-AAC honors twice and All-American honors once before the Buffalo Bills took him in the fourth round (No. 128 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent four seasons in Buffalo, hauling in 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in 64 games. After landing a three-year, $39 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he appeared in just 10 games, catching 20 passes for 239 yards and two scores before tearing his meniscus and missing the rest of the season. Jacksonville released him in May. Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham, 32, was a first-round selection of the New York Giants in the 2014 NFL draft out of LSU, where he earned All-SEC and All-American honors in 2013. In 10 professional seasons, he's recorded 575 receptions for 7,987 yards and 59 touchdowns while making two All-Pro teams and three Pro Bowls. The Super Bowl champion struggled to do anything in 2024 with the Miami Dolphins, catching just nine passes for 55 yards in nine games. Nelson Agholor Agholor, 32, entered the NFL as the Philadelphia Eagles' first-round pick (No. 20 overall) in the 2015 draft following a college career at USC that saw him earn All-Pac-12 honors twice. In his 10 seasons in the league, he's caught 389 passes for 4,858 yards and 37 touchdowns in 149 games.
