AI inclusion debate slows down Karnataka's IT policy rollout

Time of India2 days ago
Bengaluru: Karnataka's fresh information technology policy 2025-2030, which needs to be rolled out this year, is facing a dilemma due to the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the sector.
The fact that AI has become an integral part of the IT-BT sector means the state govt is struggling to decide whether to separate the two or integrate them across the board.
"Across the world, countries are split in terms of creating a policy for AI. While Europe has a sector-specific AI usage policy, countries such as the US have a one-size-fits-all policy. Having visited both these continents, we are yet to finalise what should be our model in Karnataka," said a senior IT-BT official.
The IT-BT department is currently debating whether the state should have a separate AI policy or make it the central point of the IT policy. With a wide range of consultations already embarked upon, stakeholders are giving their opinions on the use of AI, including the launch of a survey on how much AI is being used by individual companies and how the IT policy needs to integrate it. The govt is also considering aligning with the Centre's policy on AI as well.

With the centre also considering an AI policy, the state needs to align its policy with it to ensure that Karnataka gets a majority of the grants that will be provided to states under various initiatives, said IT-BT officials. However, the debate itself has appeared to slow down the rollout of the IT policy as Karnataka does not intend to rush it.
Speaking to TOI, IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge admitted that a larger consultation is taken up to roll out the fresh IT policy due to AI disruptions.
Govt sources suggest that the department is trying to launch the policy close to the Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS), which will be held between Nov 18 and 22.

Most of the expectations are being covered in the new IT policy. However, there are still a few grey areas with respect to the AI disruptions. Considering the policy is going to be a blueprint for the industry over the next four to five years, the govt is doing its due diligence and holding larger consultations to prepare the policy. This is taking a little additional time than anticipated

No plan to scrap post-matric scholarship for ST/SC students: Centre

The Centre has said there is no proposal to discontinue the Post-Matric Scholarship scheme for Scheduled Tribe or Scheduled Caste students. There have been concerns about whether the scheme will continue beyond 2025-26. In a written response in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale said the objective of the scheme is to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of SC and ST students in higher education and that there is no plan to scrap the scheme. Both schemes are currently being implemented with funding and eligibility parameters approved by the Cabinet and Expenditure Finance Committee, which remain valid from financial year 2021-22 to 2025-26. The Centre-State funding patterns differ for SC and ST students. For SC students, the cost-sharing ratio is 60:40 between the Centre and the states, except for the North-Eastern states, where it is 90:10. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment releases the central share directly to students' Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), but only after the state has disbursed its 40 per cent share. For ST students, the fund-sharing ratio stands at 75:25 between the Centre and the states. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs releases 75 per cent of the amount to state governments or Union Territories, which then contribute the remaining 25 per cent and transfer the full amount to students via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in a single instalment.

Over Rs 44 crore released under MGNREGS so far: Centre tells Lok Sabha

Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) The Centre has released Rs 44,323 crore to states and union territories under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) so far, Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. In a written reply, the minister gave the figures of disbursements of wages, material and admin components till July 17, 2025. According to the revelation, the amount disbursed is almost half of the total allocation of Rs 86,000 crore earmarked for the financial year 2025-26. In a written reply to a separate question, MoS Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan said the allocation included full pending wage liabilities and 50 per cent of Material Liabilities of the previous financial year. 'Regarding budget allocation for Mahatma Gandhi NREGS it is submitted that, for the financial year 2024-25, budget allocation of Rs. 86,000 crore has been made, which was the highest ever allocation for the scheme at the Budget Estimate (BE) stage since inception. In the financial year 2025-26, the Government has retained this allocation at Rs 86,000 crore, ensuring continued support for rural employment," Chouhan said. He said that keeping in view the demand-driven nature of the scheme, the rural development ministry closely monitors demand for employment at the ground level and seeks additional funds from the Finance as and when required. 1.8 billion Gmail users at risk: Experts warn of hidden threat stealing passwords silently

Google has reportedly issued a warning to 1.8 billion Gmail users around the world about a new type of scam. This sophisticated online scam uses invisible email prompts to trick its own AI assistant, Gemini into stealing passwords. According to a report by The Sun, the warning is for a specific kind of threat which is designed to fool users and lead them to reveal their login credentials. This alert also highlights the persistent threat of sophisticated cyberattacks that mainly target personal accounts online. The report adds that cybercriminals are embedding hidden instructions in emails with the help of white text and zero font size. This text is invisible to the user but can be easily read by Gemini. Whenever a user clicks on 'summarise this email' option, Gemini may generate fake security alerts and prompt the user to share their sensitive information of make calls to fraudulent support numbers. How the scam works As per the report by The Sun, the hackers embed som indirect prompt injections into emails. The Google chatbot— Gemini, then read these hidden commands and display false warnings on the screen of the user. The users are then asked to click on malicious links or call some fake support lines. The AI cannot distinguish between user queries and embedded hacker prompts which leads to the user being scammed. What Google and experts recommend Cybersecurity experts are urging all Gmail users to remain vigilant and adopt robust security practices. The experts have urged the users to not trust Gemini summaries which claim that their account has been compromised. The experts also advise users to configure email clients to detect and neutralise hidden content. The users can also use post-processing filters which will help in scanning suspicious keywords, URL's or phone numbers. Also, consider switching to passkeys for stronger, phishing-resistant authentication. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo Mozilla's 0Din security team first uncovered the exploit, showing how Gemini could be manipulated into displaying a fake alert that a user's password had been stolen.
