Market slump affects Eid sales in Kashmir

Hindustan Times2 days ago

Shoppers visited various markets in Kashmir valley ahead of Eid even though traders say that sales are not substantial and sacrificial sheep markets are facing a slump as fewer people are going for the sacrifice due to economic distress.
The traders said that there are multiple reasons for the slump with most immediate being Pahalgam attack and the war-like situation while the dismal market condition was in continuity for the past few years particularly after 2019.
There was a noticeable rush of people in various markets of uptown and downtown including city centre Lal Chowk and Nawhatta in old city.
People are thronging outlets selling apparel, shoes, bakeries and jewellery. The sale of sacrificial animals could be seen going on at multiple places across the region.
Kashmir traders and manufacturers federation president Yasin Khan said that the overall business was down despite Eid.
'Eid ul Adha is a big festival for us in which sacrifice is done. There used to be a lot of hustle and bustle earlier but the situation is not such now. With Eid just one day away, the sales have not been more than 20% of what used to be on normal Eid days. Last year it was 40-45%,' he said.
Jammu and Kashmir will be celebrating Eid-ul-Adha on Saturday with Muslims going for the sacrifice of animals.
The Eid comes over a month after Pahalgam attack in which 25 tourists and a local were killed by terrorists triggering an exodus of tourists from the valley and affecting the urban economy.
Khan said that the Pahalgam attack and the war-like situation between India and Pakistan may be one of the reasons for the slump.
'That is one of the reasons, but down the line there has been a pile up of issues more particularly after 2019, then Covid and GST issues,' he said.
The sheep dealers this year are experiencing less demand from the people for the sacrificial animals even though the supply of animals was in good numbers.
' The sale is not much. The circulation of money in the market is very less and people are not spending as they used to spend on Eid. Even the high spending consumers who used to buy sacrificial animals for ₹50,000 or more, they are now opting for smaller deals,' said Sajad Ahmad, a dealer at Eidgah where the largest market of sacrificial animals is held.
Another dealer said that the flight of tourists from the Valley affected the economy of the city.
'People don't have enough money. They are now more concerned about their basic needs than spending on luxuries,' said Danish Ahmad.
The old side of the city is showing no different behaviour. The traders of Shehr-e-Khaas or Old City said that the people are visiting the markets, but sales are not happening.
'The economy is in a bad shape. We are seeing minimal sales. The main reason is the impact on tourism and flight of tourists from here recently. The circulation of money is not much,' said Javed Habib, a prominent trader of Old City.

Trump travel ban shows ‘deep hostility' towards Iranians, Muslims, says Iran

Iran on Saturday lambasted US President Donald Trump's travel ban on countries, including Iran, and said that it showed "deep hostility" towards Iranians and Muslims. Iran's foreign ministry posted a statement on X quoting a senior official and said, "The decision to ban the entry of Iranian nationals - merely due to their religion and nationality - not only indicates the deep hostility of American decision-makers towards the Iranian people and Muslims but also violates... international law." Separately, Iran on Saturday slammed the new sanctions imposed by the United States targeting over 30 individuals and entities that Washington said are part of a "shadow banking" network linked to Tehran. It said that the network has laundered billions of dollars through the global financial system. "The new U.S. sanctions ..., are illegal and violate international law, and are further evidence of the deep and continuing hostility of the U.S. ruling regime towards the Iranian people," foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a statement, Reuters reported. Earlier on Wednesday, Trump issued a full-entry travel ban on nationals from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Burma (Myanmar), Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Meanwhile, partial restrictions will also be enforced on Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, limiting immigrant and non-immigrant visas due to high overstay rates or insufficient collaboration between law enforcement. The travel ban was justified by the White House, which cited Taliban control in Afghanistan, Iran and Cuba's state-sponsored terrorism, and Haiti's influx of illegal migrants during the Biden regime. Additionally, countries like Chad (49.54% B1/B2 visa overstay rate) and Eritrea (55.43% F/M/J overstay rate) were flagged for disregarding US immigration laws. 'We will restore the travel ban, some people call it the Trump travel ban, and keep the radical Islamic terrorists out of our country that was upheld by the Supreme Court," Trump had said. The travel ban was also upheld by the Supreme Court which ruled that 'it is squarely within the scope of Presidential authority' and noted that it is 'expressly premised on legitimate purposes'.

"We are land of Mahatma, Buddha but also of Krishna...gave befitting reply to those who attacked our country": Priyanka Chaturvedi

Berlin [Germany], June 8 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi has said that India's Armed Forces have given a befitting reply to those who have cast an evil eye on the country and that there will be a firm response to any terror attack. Priyanka Chaturvedi, who is a member of an all-party delegation visiting partner countries to highlight India's zero tolerance policy against terrorism, told members of the Indian diaspora in Germany that India gave a firm response to the Pahalgam terror attack through Operation Sindoor. 'Our armed forces gave a befitting reply to those who have time and again attacked our country . Our response has been mature, responsible,' she said. She said the terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir was targeted in Operation Sindoor. Priyanka Chaturvedi also took a jibe at Pakistan getting a position to serve as vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the United Nations. 'Do you know what responsibility they got? They have gotten the vice-chairmanship of the Counter-Terrorism Committee. This is like asking Masood Azhar and Hafeez Saeed to fight for global peace and justice. We have to call this out. Not only India but the entire world is suffering. From Masood Azhar to Osama Bin Laden - all have been found there (Pakistan). They have also gotten chairmanship of the Taliban Sanctions Committee,' she said. She said all faiths co-exist peacefully in India. 'The Jinnah inside Asim Munir was woken when he delivered the speech saying Hindus and Muslims cannot coexist. Today, India is a shining example of how 200 million Muslims live in harmony and is a befitting reply to Pakistan,' she said. Chaturvedi said she belongs to a party which is against talks with Pakistan till it supports cross-border terrorism. 'I am proud I come from that party', she said. She gave a call for the diaspora to show support for the Indian armed forces and the diaspora burst into chants praising them. At the start of the community event, the Indian diaspora observed a two-minute silence to pay tributes to people who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Priyanka Chaturvedi told ANI later that it is global responsibility to fight against terrorism. 'We have seen the strength of our diaspora in the six nations we met various officials and we kept forward our views in front of told them the problem of terrorism that we have been facing for decades can also reach your is the responsibility of the world to call out and the various nations that we visited have extended support to us in the fight against terrorism...' The delegation arrived in Germany after concluding their visit to Belgium. Earlier, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said they raised strong concerns about terrorism during their visit to Brussels and generals of Pakistan 'run that country with the help of a military terrorist coalition', which is a 'threat' to democracy and humanity. The Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists. India repelled subsequent Pakistani aggression and pounded its airbases. (ANI)

"An invading army at border will not be stopped by eloquence; It will be stopped by military force" MJ Akbar in Germany

Berlin [Germany], June 8 (ANI): Former Union Minister MJ Akbar, who is part of the all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, highlighted India's firm stand against terrorism, saying, 'An invading army at the border will not be stopped by eloquence. It will be stopped by military force'. Akbar is currently in Berlin as part of India's diplomatic outreach to explain the country's zero-tolerance policy on terrorism. Adressing the Indian diaspora in Germany, Akbar emphasised the unity and power of the nation that has enabled it to defeat terrorism not just within its borders but globally. 'That is the unity, that is the power today, which has defeated the terrorist state of Pakistan not only in Kashmir, not only in Punjab, not only in Rajasthan, but in every frontier across the world. We are ending our mission, this phase of our mission, your mission is only beginning. Please remember that,' Akbar stated. Akbar also praised India's economic growth, citing the World Bank's report, which shows that the number of people living in extreme poverty in India has dropped below 5 per cent. 'We have not only become the fourth largest economy in the world, but last night the World Bank released that those living in hardship poverty in India are less than 5 per cent now. That is the economic growth we want,' he said. Addressing the issue of terrorism, Akbar stressed that military force is necessary to counter invading armies and terrorists. 'An invading army at the border will not be stopped by eloquence. It will be stopped by military force,' he said. 'And that military force has been exhibited and evident to the world since the first attack of October 5 1947. Since then, when 5,000 terrorists came. Till today, thousands of terrorists are coming till today they are being defeated,' he added. Akbar also warned about the global threat of terrorism in the name of religion. 'There will come a time in this century when the world will realise that the challenge before the world is the challenge of terrorism in the name of religion,' he stated. 'Humanity and peace are really what religion teaches, not faith. And a state which encourages or which feeds, breeds and perpetrates violence of the most barbaric and brutal kind in the name of religion doesn't belong to this century,' he added. Meanwhile, BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya said while addressing the Indian diaspora, 'We want Akhand Bharat. PoK was ours. If not today, then tomorrow it will come back to us.' At the start of the community event, the Indian diaspora observed a two-minute silence to pay tributes to people who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The delegation is currently in Berlin. During their visit, the delegation met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and several members of the German Parliament (Bundestag).
