CHITTOOR: A 25-year-old woman labourer, Sirisha, was publicly tied to a tree by a local moneylender after her husband failed to repay a loan of Rs 80,000.
The incident occurred in Narayanapuram village, located in the Kuppam assembly constituency, represented by
Andhra Pradesh chief minister
Chandrababu Naidu.
Sirisha's husband, Thimmarayappa, had borrowed Rs 80,000 from moneylender Muni Kannappa around three years ago. Unable to repay the loan with interest on time, Thimmarayappa fled the village, abandoning his family.
Following his disappearance, the moneylender began harassing Sirisha to recover the debt, subjecting her to verbal abuse whenever he encountered her.
On Monday, Muni Kannappa dragged Sirisha in public and tied her to a tree, ignoring the cries of her two minor children.
Locals who tried to record the incident faced aggression from the moneylender.
After being alerted, cops rescued Sirisha and her kids.
Following widespread social media outrage over the incident, chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu condemned the act and directed the Chittoor police to arrest the culprit.
Authorities confirmed that Muni Kannappa has been taken into custody and charged under multiple sections of the BNS Act.

Minister Seethakka sets monthly targets for Panchayati Raj Dept
Hyderabad, June 17 (UNI) Telangana Minister for Panchayati Raj and Rural Development, Dr Dhanasari Anasuya Seethakka, on Tuesday directed officials of the department to set monthly targets and work systematically towards their achievement to ensure the timely implementation of development and welfare activities. Chairing a high-level review meeting here, the Minister reviewed the progress of ongoing schemes such as Mission Bhagiratha, Indira Mahila Shakti, Stree Nidhi, and the newly introduced HUM Policy for rural road construction. She also addressed pending employee issues and praised the efforts of departmental staff in delivering grassroots services, an official statement said. Minister Seethakka congratulated N Sridhar on taking charge as the Principal Secretary of the Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Department, expressing confidence that under his leadership, the department would scale new heights. She recalled Sridhar's contributions as the former Warangal Collector and CMD of Singareni Collieries, particularly in her own constituency, and said his appointment would strengthen interdepartmental coordination and help secure more funding for rural initiatives. She emphasised that the department, which represents over 2.5 crore people, should function like a family—from the minister to the multipurpose worker—working together with a shared vision of village development. Highlighting the importance of rural road infrastructure, the Minister stated that 18,472 kilometres of roads would be modernised under the HUM Policy, with 7,947 kilometres to be developed in the first phase. She added that Rs 1,800 crore worth of works had already been sanctioned and instructed officials to prepare an action plan to invite tenders within the next 15 days. The guidelines for the HUM project would be released shortly, and teams had been dispatched to Maharashtra and Karnataka to study best practices for effective implementation. Seethakka noted that rural roads, once neglected, would now surpass even urban roads in quality through this policy. She also announced that this year, 1,440 Gram Panchayat buildings and 1,440 Anganwadi centres would be constructed across the state—two for each mandal. These projects are expected to be taken up under a state-wide "Work Fair," which aims to generate employment while creating durable community assets. The Minister said that the government had resolved many staff-related issues since coming to power, including the regular payment of salaries to 93,000 village-level employees through the green channel. She further informed that the file regarding MPDO transfers was with the Chief Minister, and the vehicle allowance file had reached the Finance Department, with approvals expected soon. Principal Secretary N Sridhar, addressing the meeting, said that the Panchayati Raj Department plays a vital role in empowering rural communities and women through schemes like Indira Mahila Shakti. He said the department delivers essential services from the village to the district level and pledged to hold focused review meetings with each section to enhance overall performance. Sridhar urged everyone to work in unison to bring a good name to the government under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Minister Seethakka. BCC discusses action against Tilakwadi Club and Vega Funmobile
Belagavi: Heated discussions marked the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) council meeting on Tuesday, as several corporators accused BCC officials — including the law officer — of indirectly helping the management of Tilakwadi Club, which is under fire for violating lease terms. Deputy commissioner (Revenue) Reshma Talikoti, informed the council that the club breached lease conditions by operating a bar, restaurant, and other commercial activities, which were not permitted. As a result, the commissioner's court ordered the cancellation of the lease in May. A caveat related to the case was also filed in court. Talikoti explained that as per the Karnataka Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, three notices must be served before initiating eviction proceedings. The first notice period expired on June 13, and subsequent notices will follow. However, the club management obtained a court stay against the show-cause notice, temporarily halting the eviction. Corporators advocate Hanumant Kongali and Ramesh Sontakki criticised officials for failing to file a caveat before serving the show-cause notice. ACB finds assets worth crores in raids on state municipal officer
Jaipur: The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) carried out extensive raids at 12 locations on Tuesday in connection with a disproportionate assets case against Fateh Singh Meena, executive officer of the Paota–Pragpura municipality in Kotputli-Behror district. The ACB teams found luxury flats, high-end vehicles, farmhouses, and also recovered illegal opium from a 15-bigha farmhouse, officials said. The raids spanned Jaipur, Paota, Shahpura, Kotputli, and Thanagazi in Alwar district, and uncovered a vast network of high-value properties and assets allegedly acquired through benami channels. Officials said the searches led to the recovery of two luxury duplex flats in Trimurti Arena, Jagatpura in Jaipur, valued at around Rs 1.30 crore; 1.05 hectares of land in Deepawas in Neem Ka Thana; and about 15 bighas of land in Thanagazi in Alwar. The farmhouse in Thanagazi is estimated to be worth Rs 80 lakh. Raids were also conducted at Meena's residence in Thanagazi near Bhartrihari Tiraha, his rented house in Paota-Pragpura, and the municipal office. Properties linked to his associates, Pramod Kumar Verma in Kotputli and Kailash Gurjar in Shahpura, were also searched. The teams also found illegal opium weighing about 17gm. At a luxury flats in Jaipur, the ACB founda a luxury vehicle, Rs 2 lakh in cash, approximately 1kg of silver ornaments, and nearly 150gm of gold jewellery. According to ACB director general Dr Ravi Prakash Meharda, the action was taken after credible inputs suggested that Meena had amassed wealth over 250% than his known sources of income. Key documents related to the properties and financial transactions were seized during the operation. Officials suspect that many of the assets were acquired through proxies and hidden investments. The ACB said more information would be released after the full assessment of recovered properties and documents.
