Five people have been killed in a horrific accident north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
The crash happened early on Sunday morning on Eddie Hagen Drive in Cato Ridge.
'Stabbing'
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the road has been closed.
'Reports are that a family of six were transporting a critically injured patient who had been assaulted and stabbed to the local clinic when they lost control and left the roadway before colliding with a concrete drain,' Jamieson said.
Accident
Jamieson added that paramedics responded to this horrific collision just before 6am this morning and found emergency personnel already in attendance.
'Paramedics arrived on the scene to find total carnage. They found that the vehicle has basically split in half. Paramedics assessed the scene and found that all six male patients had sustained major injuries. Paramedics worked on two patients on the scene, however, one went into a state of cardiac arrest and was declared deceased on the scene.
'One patient with critical injuries was rushed to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required. A total of five have been confirmed deceased on the scene,' Jamieson said.
Investigation
Jamieson said paramedics, together with the metro police search and rescue, the eThekwini Fire Department and police are in attendance to investigate the cause of the accident.
'I would advise all motorists to avoid this area at all costs.'

N3 Toll
Meanwhile, N3TC and its road incident management system (RIMS) partners are ready for an expected increase in southbound traffic volumes (towards KZN.
People from across Gauteng and other provinces are expected to travel to the coast during the long weekend.
N3TC chief operating officer Thania Dhoogra said conditions along the route are currently cloudy, and traffic is flowing freely.
Patience
Dhoogra urged motorists to be patient on the road.
'Road users are, however, reminded to always be prepared for sudden changes in route and weather conditions which could impact the flow of traffic, and cause congestion and delays, especially during peak traffic periods.
'Always allow for unforeseen circumstances when planning your road trip. Passengers can support drivers by being an extra pair of eyes, helping to monitor their surroundings, and anticipate dangerous situations,' said Dhoogra.

Less than three weeks after a resident wrote and complained to the management of Campus buses about speeding buses along Rick Turner Road, a major accident left the community shaken after a bus full of university students allegedly lost control and slammed into a nearby vehicle yesterday afternoon. 'We have written several times to the bus company to inform them about buses speeding along this road. The latest was on July 24, a resident filed the complaints,' says Thomas, who called for speed-calming measures to be put in place. 'The speed limit on this road is 60km, but most drivers go past that. We have been asking for ways to slow down speedsters, but we were told no. This is a busy road; something needs to be done,' adds Thomas. According to ALS Paramedics, 23 people, including students, were injured. 'They suffered minor to serious injuries. They were transported to various hospitals in eThekwini,' says ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jameison. By 16:00 yesterday, the road was still closed to traffic. Tragedy as six-year-old boy drowns in Durban swimming pool
A six-year-old boy drowned in a residential swimming pool in Umbilo, Durban, last night. The Witness reports that Garrith Jamieson, the director of ALS Paramedics, says they were informed of a missing child in the area at around 18:00 last night and were placed on standby. 'Around 20:35, patrollers and security officials combing the area found the child in a residential pool in Brazilia Place in the Umbilo area,' he says. Jamieson adds that he was pulled from the water, and paramedics were dispatched to assist. 'Unfortunately, the child had suffered fatal injuries, and there was nothing paramedics could do for the little boy, who was 6 years old, and he was declared deceased on the scene,' he says. Missing 6-year-old child found drowned in pool in Durban
Paramedics were informed that the missing child in the Umbilo area of Durban. A 6-year-old child who was reported missing has tragically been found drowned in a pool at a home in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they were informed of the missing child in the Umbilo area of Durban on Monday evening, around 6pm. Call out 'Paramedics were placed on standby. Around 08:35pm, patrollers and security officials, combing the area, found the child in a residential pool in Brazilia Place in the Umbilo area. 'Immediately, the child was pulled from the pool, and paramedics were dispatched to assist. Unfortunately, the child had suffered fatal injuries, and there was nothing Paramedics could do for the little boy, who was 6 years old, and he was declared deceased on the scene,' Jamieson said. Jamieson added that the scene was cordoned off and handed over to the South African Police Services (Saps) for investigations 'At this stage, the exact events leading up to the drowning are unknown; however, Saps were in attendance and will be investigating further.' Rescue boats took to the water from 8.30am to search for the pilot. Investigation Video footage circulated on social media showed the light aircraft looping in the sky before plummeting into the ocean and skidding for a distance.
