Swachhta Survey: Lucknow among three cleanest cities

Time of India7 days ago
Lucknow emerged as the third cleanest city of the country, behind Ahmedabad and Bhopal in the million-plus population category under the new ranking system introduced in the Swachhta Survekshan 2024-25.
The winners were honoured by President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Thursday.
Indore, in the same population category, emerged as the cleanest city for the ninth consecutive time, followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai. These cities, however, were bracketed under newly created 'Super Swachh League' and have been kept out in this year's survey. Ahmedabad, Bhopal and Lucknow have been kept under Swachh Shehar category.
Overall Uttar Pradesh cities and towns showed a remarkably improved performance with Prayagraj again emerging as the cleanest Gana town and Noida topping the Super League chart in the 3 lakh-10lakh population category. Apart from Lucknow, seven UP cities made it to the top 20 clean cities in the million-plu category.
Cleanliness maintained during the Maha Kumbh 2025 managed to impress the judges, with several awards being given out for the sanitation practices deployed during the mega event.

"Marching steadily on the path of development under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath, 83 urban local bodies improved their rankings compared to the previous year while disposing of and dealing with solid waste," said a state govt spokesperson. Urban development minister AK Sharma received the honours on behalf of the local bodies. Lucknow mayor Sushma Kharkwal and former municipal commissioner Inderjeet Singh received the award for the city.
Lucknow became the first city in the state to achieve a 7-star garbage GFC rating, a historic milestone. Six cities -- Agra, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Prayagraj & Noida -- received a 5-star rating.
Gorakhpur achieved double success, securing third rank in the safaimitra surakshit shaher category and fourth cleanest city (with a population between 3 lakh and 10 lakh). Moradabad was at the tenth position in the same category.
Agra was recognised as the emerging clean city, securing 32nd rank nationally.
Bijnor and Shamshabad also figured in the top-100 cities (nagar palikas). Sharma said, "The achievements showcase the collective efforts of our citizens, local bodies, and senior govt officials." Principal Secretary, urban development, Amrit Abhijat, said, "We need to highlight the turnaround achieved by 16 cities that achieved the water-plus status."
Water-plus status is accorded to the local bodies that are able to handle sanitation, water management, and recycling practices effectively. For the first time, Bijnor and Shamshabad nagar palikas were able to deploy such practices. Among 17 municipal corporations, 13 were accorded the water plus status. Last time, only two cities were accorded water plus status.
Similarly, compared to 129 urban local bodies that were shortlisted in the previous round of ranking, in the 2024-25 survekshan, 337 were declared as ODF ++ ULBs.
Director of urban local bodies and Swachh Bharat state mission director Anuj Jha said, "Verified door-to-door garbage collection went up from 48% to 62% in UP in a year. Similarly, garbage processing was also up from 48% to 85%."

AP students face admission hurdles over local study criteria

Vijayawada: While students in the neighbouring states are facing issues with the domicile policy, students from Andhra Pradesh, even after fulfilling the four consecutive years of study (Class 9 to 12) criteria within state, continue to experience difficulty in attaining admission under the state quota. This is because students from the Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) unit area in Rayalaseema, who complete their junior and senior intermediate in the Andhra University (AU) jurisdiction and vice-versa, are deemed non-local candidates. This peculiar rule has become a cause for concern for those students, particularly from the SVU unit region, as many parents from the Rayalaseema region, in a bid to provide better education enroll their wards in corporate colleges situated in and around Vijayawada. For those uninitiated, the AU region comprises the erstwhile Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, and Prakasam districts while the SVU region comprises Anantapur, Kurnool, Chittoor, Kadapa, and Nellore districts. Students will be regarded as local for the purpose of admission to institutions under the above two regions only when they fulfil a four-year consecutive study period (Class 9 to 12) in their respective region. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo Even one year of study outside the region implies that the students become non-local candidates within the two region units of the state. "Regarding this issue, the university will consider the highest study period of the candidate, i.e., from Class VI to Class XII. Students who pursue their class VI to X in one particular region unit will be defined as local even when their junior and senior intermediates are studied outside their region unit," Dr NTR University of Health Sciences assistant registrar Hari Krishna explained.

Ganga water quality remained within safe limits after Maha Kumbh 2025: Centre

The water quality of the Ganga river remained within the permissible limits for primary bathing standards both during and after the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, the Jal Shakti ministry said on Thursday. An aerial view of devotees taking a holy dip at Sangam during the Maha Kumbh Mela festival in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh.(File) The monitoring conducted at eight key locations by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), including Shringverpur Ghat, Sangam, and Deeha Ghat, showed that parameters like pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Faecal Coliform (FC) were well within the acceptable limits throughout religious festivities, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on Thursday. The data was collected between January 12 and February 20, 2025, covering the Amrit Snan days and adjoining periods. The CPCB increased its monitoring from five to eight locations midway through the period to ensure broader coverage. According to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the positive results reflect the effectiveness of the sanitation and wastewater management systems implemented during the Mela. The sanitation plan developed by the Prayagraj Mela Authority included temporary drainage systems spanning 250 km, the use of bioremediation ponds, and the installation of temporary sewage and faecal sludge treatment plants. After the event, these systems were dismantled and stored for future use, while disinfection measures ensured hygienic site closure, Choudhary said. The ministry also stated that under the Namami Gange Programme, 502 projects have been sanctioned with 323 completed, 150 under implementation, and 29 in the tendering stage. The Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), which conducted a third-party appraisal, found that the programme has made substantial progress in reducing pollution, improving river flow, and engaging local communities, the MoS said.
