The Hindua day ago
In response to a circular from the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) announcing that the World School Volleyball Championship (Under-15 Boys and Girls) will be held in Shangluo City, China, from December 4 to 13, 2025, the Andhra Pradesh unit of the SGFI has called for nominations of eligible and talented students for the national selection trials to be held at Balewadi, Pune, Maharashtra.
In a statement on Friday, School Games Federation of Andhra Pradesh Secretary G. Bhanumurthy Raju said that zonal (erstwhile district) and State-level volleyball selection trials would be conducted to identify eight boys and eight girls from the State for the national trials.
The boys' State selection trials will be held from August 25 to 27, and the girls' trials from August 28 to 30, 2025. Only students born on or after January 1, 2010 — with permissible birth years 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 — are eligible. Participants must carry their original birth certificate in English, issued by a government-approved authority, and have a passport valid for at least six months beyond December 2025.
District-level trials will be conducted on August 13 under the supervision of the respective Zonal Educational Officer and District School Games Secretary. The State-level trials will take place on August 18, 2025, at K.B.C. Zilla Parishad Boys High School, Patamata, Vijayawada, in NTR district.
Sports Excellence Awards
Director of School Education V. Vijay Rama Raju has instructed all schools across the State to celebrate the birth anniversary of 'Wizard of Hockey' Dhyan Chand on August 29 in a grand manner. As part of the celebrations, the best five schools in each district — selected based on their sports achievements — will receive the School of Sports Excellence Awards for the academic year 2024-25. A five-member committee headed by the District Educational Officer will review applications.
The last date for submitting applications is August 18. Scrutiny will be done on August 19, and the final list of awardees will be announced on August 21. Awards will be presented on National Sports Day, August 29, in each district.

Breaking down India's over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah when he plays Test cricket

Over the English summer, the debate around Jasprit Bumrah's workload reached dizzying heights. Despite being hailed as the best red-ball pace bowler of the current generation, if he is unable to last a full Test series, either due to injury or a pre-decided schedule, should he be India's first choice? It's a question that is perhaps not going to go away anytime soon, but a look at his bowling returns, purely in terms of the number of overs, tell a story. The last two Test series India have played have both been strenuous overseas five-match clashes against top sides, and Bumrah has played eight of those matches. After the Australia tour, as is well publicised now, the load of bowling at high intensity right through the series eventually led to him walking off midway through the final match in Sydney. Then he underwent a rehab process for his back, missed the ICC Champions Trophy, came back during the IPL, and it was made clear well in advance that he'd not play the full series in England. ONTO THE LORD'S HONOURS BOARD! 🙌 With 11 fifers, #JaspritBumrah has now equalled Wasim Akram's record for most 5-wicket hauls in SENA countries! 👏#ENGvIND 👉 3rd TEST, DAY 2 | LIVE NOW on JioHotstar 👉 — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 11, 2025 Across the last two Test tours, Bumrah has bowled 273 out of India's 1107.5 overs, which comes to 24.7%. It is a staggering number in itself but also a marker of how much India depend on him – and Mohammed Siraj, of course – for breakthroughs. That means Bumrah bowls 1/4th of India's overs whenever he plays, despite India often playing at least five bowling options. In Manchester, Bumrah bowled 33 overs, the second-most he has bowled in a Test innings, which would explain why, despite being in a must-win situation going to The Oval, India resisted the temptation to tax Bumrah's body further. While the numbers paint a picture, the intangibles are there too. Like, the nature of pitches right through the England series, as the hosts preferred to have flat tracks full of runs, for the most part. In Manchester, when Bumrah and India struggled (he conceded more than 100 runs in an innings for the first time in his career, another staggering stat), bowling coach Morne Morkel explained why it was a struggle for India. 'We are finding it to hard to create pressure from the other end. For him (Bumrah) to be successful, we need to build partnerships. The other guys need to help him out and I think at times, the guys are also trying from the other end, they are a little bit greedy — trying to strive too much and that's how we leak and sort of release that pressure. You can't say anything about Bumrah, he's number one in the world, he's skillful. At times, you need help from the other end,' the former South Africa pacer said. While Siraj has rightly been praised for being the only pacer – across both teams – to last the entire series, their workloads can't be put on the same weighing scale. Sitanshu Kotak, India's batting coach, had said at the start of the series that the workload analysis is different for each individual. Later in Manchester, he went into it in more detail, speaking in terms of Siraj being able to take more load on his shoulders. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Another five-star show from #JaspritBumrah! 🔥 The pace ace picks up his 12th five-wicket haul (Joint-most by an Indian pacer overseas) outside India wrapping up England's innings! 🇮🇳🎯 #ENGvIND 1st Test Day 3 LIVE NOW Streaming on JioHotstar 👉… — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 22, 2025 'Before the Test series, if a bowler puts in a certain amount of overs per week, if he's preparing for T20 and putting in 20 overs, 25 overs, 6 overs every day for example, that is good enough workload for T20,' Kotak said. 'They have GPS. It shows the record of how many overs the bowler has put in throughout the week. And they're in constant touch with the bowling coach and S&C (strength & conditioning) coach even during the IPL. So, the build-up of the last 4-5 weeks, you need to determine if there's no spike in it. 'So, what's the spike? If a bowler is putting in 30 overs per week, and suddenly, in the first innings, he's put in 35 overs, that's the spike in his load. So, the number of overs that Siraj is putting in every week, it's not necessary that it's due to practice. That load is due to the match as well. Then it depends on whether Siraj himself, or the physio, feels that he is tired. Then, they will think about the load. Otherwise, his bowling load is very high.' Benjamin Sesko joins Manchester United for £74 million from RB Leipzig: 'What excites me is the future'

Sesko's arrival at Old Trafford completes Ruben Amorim's overhaul of Manchester United's attack ahead of the 2025-26 season, with the club having also acquired Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matheus Cunha and Brentford's Bryan Mbuemo. read more Slovenian forward Benjamin Sesko applauds fans at the Old Trafford Stadium during a friendly game between Manchester United and Fiorentina. Reuters Manchester United signed Slovenian international Benjamin Sesko on Saturday, making him the third forward the 20-time English champions have acquired in the close season. The 22-year-old's arrival from RB Leipzig, in a deal reported to be worth up to £74 million (85 million euros, $99 million), completes an overhaul of the Red Devils' attack that failed to fire last season. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Sesko, who has scored 16 goals in 41 international appearances, is United's third major attacking signing following the recruitment of Matheus Cunha for £62.5m from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo, who joined from Brentford for £65m with £6m in add-ons. More from Football 'Manchester United is pleased to confirm that Benjamin Sesko has joined the club, subject to registration,' read a club statement. The five-year contract includes a guaranteed payment of £66.3million, with the remainder in add-ons, according to reports. 'The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future,' said Sesko. 'When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon." Sesko had also been linked with Newcastle, but once again Eddie Howe's League Cup winners failed to land their target despite being able to offer European football this season, unlike Manchester United. Howe had seen Sesko as a ready-made replacement for unhappy Swedish striker Alexander Isak, who has been a target for champions Liverpool. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Exceptional young talents' Sesko, though, said he felt a vibrancy at United as they seek to rebound from a desperately disappointing 2024-2025 campaign under 40-year-old Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim. 'From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created,' he said. 'It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions. 'I cannot wait to start learning from Ruben and connecting with my team-mates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together.' Sesko had also previously been linked with Arsenal after impressing during his two-year spell in Germany, where he scored 39 times in 87 appearances for Leipzig, including 21 goals last season. Standing 1.95 metres (6ft 4ins) tall, Sesko's towering physique, electric pace and eye for goal have earned comparisons with Manchester City's Erling Haaland. Like Haaland, he also made his name at RB Salzburg before moving to Germany in 2023. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD United are banking on Sesko realising his abundant potential to fire them back into contention at the top of the Premier League table. Between them, Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo combined for 58 goals last season. The massive outlay on their arrivals needs to bear fruit quickly with United under pressure to meet financial sustainability rules, especially without the revenue of European football this season. Sesko's arrival is likely to presage the departure of Rasmus Hojlund, whose plight might provide a salutary tale for the Slovenian. The 23-year-old Danish forward arrived with similarly high hopes but has failed to deliver and is reportedly subject to interest from Serie A side AC Milan. Sesko though has convinced United's director of football Jason Wilcox that he has the attributes to help propel United back into title contention. 'Benjamin possesses a rare combination of electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football,' said Wilcox. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We have followed Benjamin's career closely; all of our data analysis and research concluded that he has the required qualities and personality to thrive at Manchester United.'

Not Bumrah, Wasim Akram Names Leader Of Indian Bowling Attack: 'Full Of Hunger...'

Last Updated: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram praised Siraj's stamina and mental strength. It's been close to a week since India drew the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2 with a 6-wicket win against England at the Oval. But people can't stop praising Mohammed Siraj, who turned the tide with a ferocious spell on the final day of the fifth Test match. England needed 36 runs to win with four wickets in hand. The game seemed to be in England's favour, especially after twin hundreds, from Joe Root and Harry Brook. But the final day saw Siraj helping India pull off a terrific return to win the game. He returned 5 for 104 in the second innings, completing a 9-wicket match haul. He even ended the series as the highest wicket-taker for India with 23 scalps under his belt. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram was highly impressed with Siraj's performance on the English tour. Speaking to Telecom Asia Sport, he called Siraj a 'fighter' 'I rarely watch cricket when I'm not working, but I was glued to the last day. Siraj was full of hunger and passion – it was an incredible effort. To bowl nearly 186 overs across five Tests and still be that fiery on the final day shows remarkable stamina and mental strength," Akram said. 'He's not just a support bowler anymore. He's leading the attack and doing it with heart. Even when a catch went down– that of Brook – he didn't lose focus. That's the mark of a fighter. Test cricket is alive and kicking," he added. Siraj played all five Test matches and bowled over 180 overs without showing any signs of fatigue. He led India's pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who featured in only three matches in order to manage his workload. The Hyderabad pacer might have struggled to find his rhythm at the beginning of the series, but he ended up as a hero. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
